To want holiday accommodation that’s not dog friendly

Pikachuspal · 31/03/2022 14:52

Almost every place I look at is advertised as dog friendly! My kids are allergic to animal hair, as in react to hair on someone’s clothes. What’s the point in forking out for a holiday for it to be potentially ruined by hair and manky dog smell?

Abroad doesn't mean more enjoyable than UK. My kids prefer camping.

I've since gone on to have loads of enjoyable trips in the UK, so yes. DD is 6 and has never left this country, and most of our holidays are camping.

Point is that my DPs were only really interested in their own enjoyment (particularly DF), so even things that would have been nice for DB and I to do in the UK we never did. The 'need' to have the dogs with us at all times was a smokescreen.

Ahh gotcha.
@fairylightsandwaxmelts yup. I have taken a step back. However she chose to get a dog but has not embraced the responsibility of training it. She admitted this when I pointed it out to her. I also have been watching dog videos to give her tips coz she can’t be arsed. I suggested she was anxious and stressed about it and she admitted she was but she still doesn’t train her dog and brings it along and frankly spoils our mornings. But I’m the entitled one??? I don’t fucking think so
Right, but again, you don't need to spend time with her or her dog if you don't want to.

It's not entitled to take your dog to dog-friendly places - if you don't want her bringing the dog then choose activities or venues that don't allow dogs, or invite her to your house so she has no choice but to leave it at home.

I agree there should be a 'pet free' filter, so you can easily filter out accommodation that allows dogs and other animals. I've also noticed that since lockdown more and more places let people take their dogs inside cafes, shops etc which I'm not really a fan of, but UK is particularly dog friendly place. Thankfully, most of countries in Europe don't usually allow dogs in hotels or public places, so it's a good alternative.

Both Holiday Cottages and Sykes offer a pet free filter, just two amongst many I am sure!

Depends where you are, given that "Europe" is pretty big.
In 2005 (so nothing to do with Covid) I remember being in a French Alps foothill town and being struck by how dogs many were about in shopping centres, cafes etc.. Conversely in Spain IME there seems more often the idea that a dog is primarily a working animal.

Elphame · 01/04/2022 15:18

We accept dogs with pleasure - it's a business decision.

Many of the visitors to our area have a dog or two in tow so I'd be taking myself out of a large part of the market if I was not to allow them.

In most of Europe, especially Central and Eastern Europe, which is often disregarded as a holiday destination. In these countries dogs aren't generally seen as 'fur babies', but animals and so aren't allowed in public places.

Oh but you'll lose the business of OP and the half dozen poster who hate dogs- and they all sound so lovely.

Verv · 01/04/2022 15:24

Fuck, like just because you have allergies the entire holiday industry should be geared to your wants at the expense of others?

Book a let that doesn't accept dogs, there are loads of them.

I know. That's so unusual on MN :-)

Counting my blessings and considering increasing the number of dogs I allow from 2 up to 3!

One can dislike dogs and still be a nice person you know…

Nope.
SockFluffInTheBath · 01/04/2022 16:01

Kidding 😉

Clymene · 01/04/2022 16:58

That might be true of Eastern Europe @CocoLoco123. France, Italy, Germany and Belgium are all dog friendly. You can take dogs pretty much anywhere except the supermarket.

Aldinho57 · 01/04/2022 17:07

Just looked at Sykes holiday cottagesthey are currently listing 6,257 cottages that are PET FREE, wow that was difficult.

yellowsuninthesky · 01/04/2022 17:55
@HELLITHURT I’m afraid it’s true. A bit like toddlers, most dogs are only adorable and irresistible and delightful to their owners and most people, including other dog owners, don’t really care. Sorry and all that.

It’s like kids. I only barely tolerate my own so as for other petioles? 🤷‍♀️
Absolutely true. I like my own dc, but am not keen on other peoples'.

That makes me a nasty person to begin with.

So along with not being a dog fan either, I am the scum of the earth.

Oh well. I can live with that.

I am quite surprised that the "with-dog" market is bigger than the "dog-free" market for cafes, B&Bs etc but I guess it depends on the area and also illustrates how many people got lockdown dogs.

CocoLoco123 · 01/04/2022 17:56

That's why I said 'most of Europe'. There are 44 countries in Europe, so France, Italy, Germany and Belgium isn't exactly representative of the whole continent.

Are they pet-free in the sense that the owners don't have dogs, or in the sense that they accept dogs?

Not the same. Some people don't accept dogs because they have animals themselves.

yellowsuninthesky · 01/04/2022 17:56

don't accept dogs

CocoLoco123 · 01/04/2022 17:56

that was to @Clymene

I've not noticed that Germany is particularly dog-friendly but it might have also changed since covid.
Federal · 01/04/2022 18:16

Judging by all the recent threads, maybe what we need is a ‘dog friendly but only if you have a small dog’ filter.
Hmm
