To want holiday accommodation that’s not dog friendly

Pikachuspal · 31/03/2022 14:52

Almost every place I look at is advertised as dog friendly! My kids are allergic to animal hair, as in react to hair on someone’s clothes. What’s the point in forking out for a holiday for it to be potentially ruined by hair and manky dog smell?

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

I’m with you, I have severe animal allergies.

Some websites don’t even let you filter dogs out. Others bring dog friendly up after a page or so, even if you have filtered them. From my experience more places allow dogs than don’t.

From my experience, that is definitely not the case. Bring up a list of holiday places, tick dog friendly and the list is cut by half
VickyEadieofThigh · 31/03/2022 15:39

Most cottage websites have a filter so that you can only look at properties that do not allow dogs. Use it.

Babadook76 · 31/03/2022 15:39

There’s far more places that don’t accept dogs than do.

GreenOrangePear · 31/03/2022 15:40

I'm with you - but I'm also a grumpy person who is also sick of going to cafes and restaurants with dogs in them- often not even well behaved dogs.

gogohm · 31/03/2022 15:40

@Pikachuspal

Holiday cottage owners make business decisions. The U.K. holiday market (as opposed to the many that choose to go abroad) has large numbers of dog owners so they seek their business, there's no way I would book an overpriced cottage if I wasn't bringing the dog (pre covid!) last year we did stay in the U.K. due to the restrictions and it didn't allow dogs (my dog lives with exh). Around my way (resort area) 90% + visitors have dogs, I would not pick here for a holiday but as I said before neither premier inn nor Wetherspoons allow dogs, and they gastro pub only allows them downstairs so there's options even in my dog friendly town.

SamphiretheStickerist · 31/03/2022 15:40

@Pikachuspal

Point taken but it increasingly feels the needs of dogs to be taken everywhere trump the rights of people with allergies to not be Ill. I don’t dislike dogs but can’t escape them these days
But you can. More than half of all holiday cottages do not allow dogs. It takes ages to find one that does in the nicer places all over the UK.

Just change your criteria when you run a search and stop being annoyed by the places that do allow dogs.

Oh, and don't look on sites called things like Canine Holidays 🙂

Clymene · 31/03/2022 15:41

Holiday cottages.co.uk allows you to tick a 'does not allow pets' filter

Bollocks. If there’s no option to filter out pets then it’s because none of them allow pets. What websites are you on where there’s more dog friendly accommodation than there’s not?
MossyBottom · 31/03/2022 15:46

Totally agree. Lots of websites let you filter dog friendly but I've yet to find one that lets you search dog free.
Same for pubs and restaurants that allow people take dogs.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 31/03/2022 15:47

All pubs/cafes allow dogs on.

That's blatantly not true, though Grin

Spidey66 · 31/03/2022 15:49

For many dog owners though the point of a UK break is so they can bring the dog.

I love bringing the dog on holiday. She lives beaches and it’s great to see her enjoying a dog friendly beach :)

Laiste · 31/03/2022 15:49

I agree with you OP. (I used to own dogs - so no hatred/allergies ect.) Just don't want to stay in a house which has had other people's pets roaming in it and over it. You don't know where they've been or really how much cleaning has been done.

I used the no pets filter but couldn't get a holiday house the right size location this year so had to get ''dog friendly'' ...

The reviews all said spotless so fingers crossed.

Reading the reviews of some of the dog friendly cottages a doggy smell on the sofas ect was reported in some of them. So YANBU OP.

What a weird take on your situation.
keeptalkinghappytalk · 31/03/2022 15:53

Great to hear!!!

InkySquid · 31/03/2022 15:54

I need to know where this area is where all cafes allow dogs. Even the ones that say they are dog friendly round here actually just tolerate dogs in outside areas only. No use to me if I'm on my own with the dog and can't actually place an order without going inside. I'm coeliac as well so don't know what I was thinking getting a dog just to limit my eating out options even further. I've got no issue with places not allowing dogs, I just wish it didn't require a load of research to find out which places are which.

Kanaloa · 31/03/2022 15:56

Very few hotels, especially big chains, allow dogs. So I’m sure you’d be able to find some dog free accommodation. Actually when our dog was still with us we had trouble finding somewhere that did allow dogs so I can’t imagine it’s such a struggle to find somewhere that doesn’t.

keeptalkinghappytalk · 31/03/2022 15:58

The default for hotels, cottages and also restaurants and pubs now seems to be … whether advertised as such or not …. that dogs are welcomed. This means loads of us… allergic, or timid around dogs, or just plain unwilling to sleep and eat in the company or detritus of other people’s dogs… have fewer and fewer options and are being frozen out of hospitality…

Horst · 31/03/2022 15:58

I’d definitely try a holiday park or hotel if you want no pets. Much better odds.

Laiste · 31/03/2022 15:59

It's true that the majority of caravans on organised sites aren't pet friendly.

IME only the oldest set each year are designated for pets.

mustlovegin · 31/03/2022 15:59

YANBU OP. It's gross

Hshuznw · 31/03/2022 15:59

@incognitoforthisone

No, not all pubs and cafes allow dogs. Most don't.

More and more are. I’m in london and I’m increasingly seeing dogs in restaurants.

Come to Cumbria Grin

Tons of them around here. Not everywhere allows dogs, but the vast majority of the pubs do (indoors and out), and a lot of the cafês do table service so you don't need to worry about the dog. They even have doggy menus!

Sirzy · 31/03/2022 16:02

What this shows is when you have a specific requirement either way it can be frustrating when the places your after don’t meet it and make it seem like there are very few options

Thatsplentyjack · 31/03/2022 16:02

I have the opposite problem.

BoredZelda · 31/03/2022 16:04

There are far more cottages, pubs, hotels etc that don't allow pets than do. Choose one of those.

That’s not my experience.
