To want holiday accommodation that’s not dog friendly

Pikachuspal · 31/03/2022 14:52

Almost every place I look at is advertised as dog friendly! My kids are allergic to animal hair, as in react to hair on someone’s clothes. What’s the point in forking out for a holiday for it to be potentially ruined by hair and manky dog smell?

If "almost" every place is advertised as dog friendly then presumably you are also seeing some places that are not. So go to one of those. Problem solved.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 31/03/2022 14:58

There's loads of places that aren't pet-friendly Confused

gogohm · 31/03/2022 14:59

Less than half of holiday let's are dog friendly, I have a dog it can be hard to find suitable accommodation. With hotels premier inn do not allow dogs nor do Wetherspoons (who also have hotels)

Pikachuspal · 31/03/2022 15:13

Point taken but it increasingly feels the needs of dogs to be taken everywhere trump the rights of people with allergies to not be Ill. I don’t dislike dogs but can’t escape them these days

Wolfiefan · 31/03/2022 15:15

But you can escape them. Just choose a holiday place that doesn’t allow dogs.

Sirzy · 31/03/2022 15:15

When we used to do cottage holidays this was a regular issue. As much as I love dogs Ds breathing sadly doesn’t.

We do haven caravan holidays now, most of their vans don’t allow dogs.

NotEnoughTeaYet · 31/03/2022 15:17

But it's a big factor with holiday cottages, as it means dog owners can take their dogs with them, rather than putting them in kennels - so it's inevitable more cottages will advertise that as an option. If all hotels were now being dog friendly then that would be different...

Just10moreminutesplease · 31/03/2022 15:18

It’s got nothing to do with the rights of dogs vs people with allergies, it’s just a case of supply and demand (though I’m sure it is annoying for people with allergies).

Lots of people choose to take their dogs on holiday. And if holiday lets get more bookings because they are pet friendly, why wouldn’t they go down this route?

Hoppinggreen · 31/03/2022 15:20

We have a dog so we look for dog friendly accommodation but there are plenty of places where we can’t take him so I doubt it’s actually an issue

Bluetowelsandflannels · 31/03/2022 15:22

I run a BnB and it's definitely not dog friendly for those very reasons. I don't want the next guests, or me, to have to deal with someone else's dog detritus.

Littleelffriend · 31/03/2022 15:23

I totally agree with you OP

Bluetowelsandflannels · 31/03/2022 15:23

I have a dog too but he goes to dog daycare when we go away.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 31/03/2022 15:23

I’m with you, I have severe animal allergies.

Some websites don’t even let you filter dogs out. Others bring dog friendly up after a page or so, even if you have filtered them. From my experience more places allow dogs than don’t.

Thelikelylass · 31/03/2022 15:23

Do a search on the likes of Sykes cottages for cottages but don't tick pet friendly. Try come up very clearly marked if pets aren't allowed (I know as I do the opposite to look for pet friendly ones!) there are plenty out there.

LakieLady · 31/03/2022 15:23

We always had trouble finding places that were dog friendly when my dogs were still alive. The nicest places were always "no dogs".

Maybe the increase in dog ownership during Covid has led to some holiday home owners revising their dog policy.

Of course you can. Just book into one of the millions of cottages or hotels that doesn't allow dogs.

The reason holiday cottages allow dog is because many of the owners will have dogs themselves, and know how hard it can be for owners to find dog-friendly accommodation. It's a huge selling point for many of these places - come and enjoy a holiday and bring your dogs so you don't have to worry about leaving them in kennels.

It’s not that easy, as there aren’t ‘millions’. I find the majority allow dogs.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 31/03/2022 15:29

There are far more cottages, pubs, hotels etc that don't allow pets than do. Choose one of those.

Maybe not "millions" but it's certainly not hard to find them!

I get the impression that lots of non-dog owners just like to complain for the sake of it on here, tbh.

I’d love a dog. I hate it that I’m allergic to them, severely allergic. But l agree that holidaying in the U.K. is set up in favour of dog owners. There’s no regard for invisible allergies.

All pubs/cafes allow dogs on.

There are plenty of holiday cottages and apartments that don't allow dogs. What you're actually saying is that you've found some holiday cottages that you happen to like the look of, but they aren't actually suitable for you.

It's not about 'rights', it's about choosing something that meets your family's needs. My dad is disabled and can't manage stairs, but he doesn't search for a holiday cottage and then complain that it doesn't have a Stannah stair lift. He accepts that he can't stay in (eg) a 16th century thatched Tudor cottage that would be his dream holiday accommodation, and books a modern bungalow or a ground floor apartment that's accessible to him.

Snoken · 31/03/2022 15:36

Well, about 33% of UK households have a dog according to google, there aren't as many people who are allergic to them. Considering much more than half the holiday lets don't allow dogs tells you that it isn't as unfair as you think. Airbnb for example only have about 3% of pet friendly places.

Blossomtoes · 31/03/2022 15:36

Please tell me where all these places are because our problem is exactly the opposite.

nearlyspringyay · 31/03/2022 15:37

Just book somewhere that doesn't allow pets, there are plenty. As I've found out when trying to book with the dog.

incognitoforthisone · 31/03/2022 15:37

No, not all pubs and cafes allow dogs. Most don't.
