To want holiday accommodation that’s not dog friendly

Almost every place I look at is advertised as dog friendly! My kids are allergic to animal hair, as in react to hair on someone’s clothes. What’s the point in forking out for a holiday for it to be potentially ruined by hair and manky dog smell?

Have a look at holiday cottages in Scotland then for doggy people more allow dogs than not.
Nice attitude from people who minimise allergies, they can kill and at the least make life pretty miserable for sufferers.

Come to Cumbria grin

Tons of them around here. Not everywhere allows dogs, but the vast majority of the pubs do (indoors and out)

Pubs are more likely to allow dogs round here, but not usually open for coffee and a bacon cob at 10 am :-)

Nobody is minimising anything.

But let's not pretend like you have no choice whatsoever, because you definitely do.

HopefulProcrastinator · 31/03/2022 16:06

Affordable self catering that isn't dog friendly is really hard to come by. It's not helped by the lack of "pet free" as a filter on the search engines for most of the main therefore reputable companies.

YANBU I go on holiday to relax, not to have to worry about pet hair

Clymene · 31/03/2022 16:06

@MossyBottom

Totally agree. Lots of websites let you filter dog friendly but I've yet to find one that lets you search dog free. Same for pubs and restaurants that allow people take dogs.
I have literally given you the url for one two posts above yours

Our local pub is dog friendly and does breakfast!

Anything from a bacon roll, to waffles, to a full English! Unsurprisingly, they're very popular Grin

vodkaredbullgirl · 31/03/2022 16:08

Hmm not all places want dogs, I should know I've tried with having 2 dogs.

Dobbysgotthesocks · 31/03/2022 16:09

How about being grateful that you can afford a holiday!!!! Some of us can't even dream of that!!! 🤬🤬🤬

CounsellorTroi · 31/03/2022 16:09

@Kanaloa

Very few hotels, especially big chains, allow dogs. So I’m sure you’d be able to find some dog free accommodation. Actually when our dog was still with us we had trouble finding somewhere that did allow dogs so I can’t imagine it’s such a struggle to find somewhere that doesn’t.
Best Western is a dog friendly chain. Some other chains like Hilton and Holiday Inn leave it to individual hotels to decide. It’s always worth asking as they may not advertise that they are pet friendly.
Mojoj · 31/03/2022 16:09

God not another post bemoaning how pet friendly we all are. Just pick another cottage that doesn't allow dogs. Problem solved. Pet owners are allowed to have holidays with their kids AND dogs just as you are with your kids.

First page of google results. You're welcome

I've just done a search on a holiday site for cottages in Northumbria for a week in June. 238 cottages returned, turn on the pet filter and that reduces to 80. That's roughly in line with my experience that two thirds of places do not allow dogs.

DogsDryWineAndCheese · 31/03/2022 16:14

There are literally thousands of places in the UK that categorically do not allow dogs - far more than who do. There has also been links provide to sites where you can specifically search ‘no dogs’.
A huge portion of the U.K. are dog owners so obviously they are also going to be catered for in some places…

DisforDarkChocolate · 31/03/2022 16:14

Definitely don't come to the Lakes. Sometimes it's like there are more dogs than sheep

Agree. It is much harder for a pet owner to take their pets on holiday than it is for an allergic person to find holiday accomodation that does not allow pets.

I am also looking for non dog friendly, because I want to invite friends for a few days and if it is dog friendly one of them will want to bring her dog, who is fine as dogs go but whose presence then decides where we go and what we can do! To be clear the dog has other people at home to look after it, I am not suggesting she leaves it on its own or boards it out. I also think she would enjoy a rest from the dog as its care normally gets left to her by default.

And you are right, a lot more places are dog accepting than a few years ago.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 31/03/2022 16:18

Oh FGS just use the filters when when you search.why such drama?

Booboobibles · 31/03/2022 16:21

I have dogs and I wish the dog friendly places would have wooden floors, shorter curtains, beds with no valances etc. They usually smell so overpoweringly of dog wee and air freshener I can’t bear it even as a dog owner.

Crackingowlsanctuary · 31/03/2022 16:25

I’ve literally just this week added my holiday home to a popular website that advertises them and purposefully decided to make it dog friendly as the the amount of properties that were dog friendly in that area were so limited compared to the amount that were not.

From the research I’ve been doing at least 75% of properties in this popular holiday area are NOT dog friendly so there are definitely plenty of options for anyone specifically looking for that. Perhaps it depends on the area you are looking at.

Chely · 31/03/2022 16:26

I should hope they would clean it and have no 'manky dog smell.

Terfydactyl · 31/03/2022 16:26

@Blossomtoes

Please tell me where all these places are because our problem is exactly the opposite.
Me too, I scour websites for dog friendly places, after using say Sykes for eg. Theres almost 8000 cottages on the week I want, filter to dog friendly and I'm down to 700, filter again for enclosed garden and I'm down to 400 or so. Then look at areas I would like to visit and theres possibly 3. 2 will be out of my price range so I'm left with one choice.

Saying that I do love Scotland so mostly use the discover Scotland site. I've found some lovely places, but still plenty even in Scotland do not allow dogs and Scotland is very dog friendly.

And now I've typed Scotland far too many times and it's odd.

Lou98 · 31/03/2022 16:26

I have two dogs (and live in Scotland) and find it a nightmare trying to find anywhere that accepts dogs. We tend to use dog sitting/kennels and go without them as always find we have more choice.

Considering you've posted this without a general area to help you look for places, it sounds as though you're just posting to moan about dogs and their owners. Obviously they don't trump people with allergies - the people that accept dogs can generally make more money as a lot of people holidaying in the UK will want to take their dogs so won't go if they don't accept them.

If you post general areas you're looking in and what you're looking for maybe people can actually help with places?

whataboutbob · 31/03/2022 16:27

YANBU. But the dog friendly market is huge and few businesses dare antagonise dog owners. If they do so they couch it in apologetic/ we really love your dogs but... type language.
