"Work stack" - FFS

377 replies

CovidCanDoOne123 · 30/03/2022 19:57

So in addition to the likes of 'reach out', 'align'; 'ducks in a row', 'going forward' etc etc etc...we now have 'work stack' instead of workload.

Losing the will to live.

Ps no AIBU. The use of 'work stack' is unreasonable.

OzziePopPop
have ducks (real ones, around 20 or so) living in my back garden. I’ve tried all sorts to get them ‘in a row’. Best I can do is in a line, following each other and that involved a handful of their favourite split peas. Off topic maybe but just how does one get their ducks in a row, are mine faulty?
I think a very neatly laid row of mixed corn before releasing them in the morning is your best bet, but to be honest I don't think it would remain straight for long

Nave · 01/04/2022 15:18

I hate hate hate “reach out” instead of “phone”!

Icandefinitelydothis · 01/04/2022 15:21

@Nave

I hate hate hate “reach out” instead of “phone”!
Oh yes, I’d forgotten reaching out. Hideous.

‘Giving back’ equally so.

Herecomethedaffodils · 01/04/2022 15:46

I haven't had chance to read the full thread (but I will as it's my thing!!) so apologies if this had been mentioned already.

I know it's a real word but I just can't stand "diarise". It sounds like you're going to say "diarrhoea" Hmm Just say "write down your future arrangements/meetings in your diary please." FFS

Chonfox · 01/04/2022 15:49

I think the worst I have heard yet is “let’s idea shower” I mean wtaf?

🤣🤣🤣 you're joking?! I thank Zeus every day that I left the corporate world and all its bollox!

yellowsuninthesky · 01/04/2022 16:13

I had a connection request on LinkedIn about a week ago. I hadn't responded, but today I saw that we had four connections in common including two direct work colleagues so I clicked accept.

Oh dear that was a mistake. I had a message back including the phrases "probabilistic Identity resolution" provider and "deterministic customer identifiers" and asking for a call next week.

WIBU to message back and say "no I've no idea what you are talking about?"

TheDogsMother · 01/04/2022 16:16

@Grilledaubergines

Oh how I want to go back 20 years to a time with none of this bollocks.
Ahh but it was always so. I remember twenty years ago a client being described as having 'skin in the game' and forty years ago someone in a meeting saying 'let's run it up the flagpole and see who salutes' 🤣🤣🤣
MasterBeth · 01/04/2022 16:50

@mummyhat

‘Deep diving’ agree🤮 is the verbal equivalent of underpants hanging over the arse of baggy trackies.

Push-back equates to an aircraft setting off from its parking space, but is now defined as resistance to something? Contradiction in terms.

“piece of work” - nope. Cake comes in pieces.

There are some right pieces of work on this thread...
MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 02/04/2022 00:07

I thought “ducks in a row” was purely a Mumsnet term. Never heard it in a corporate setting (or for that matter any real world setting)

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 02/04/2022 00:09

Oh well - I think I have been entrenched in the corporate world too long as I read this thread and see a number of phrases and think ‘what’s wrong with that?’ 😂😂😂 . In particular, the expressions that have a technical meaning in the workplace - eg ‘scrum’, ‘sprint’ etc - but without that context might appear meaningless at best

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 02/04/2022 00:10

I think mental load has become overused on mumsnet. It seems to be one of those things that people add to a list to justify what they actually do (along with "life admin")

Yes!!

MurmuratingStarling · 02/04/2022 00:10

@Bessica1970

I’ve never heard this, but ‘mental load’ irrationally pisses me off.
Yeah this. Really hate this @Bessica1970! ^

Also - never heard of 'work stack' EVER @CovidCanDoOne123

MurmuratingStarling · 02/04/2022 00:12

'Bluesky thinking' and 'touch base.' YUK!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 02/04/2022 00:15

I heard an "impactful" in the wild today.

This thread has reminded me that I used to

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 02/04/2022 00:21

...used to work in a place that used the 5S system to keep things organised.

It was 5Ss in Japanese and they translated it into English words with the Ss. Sort/set in order/shine/standardise/sustain.

Perfectly legitimate method, but one boss used to talk about "doing the Shine", and I found it very irritating. He wasn't the one tidying/cleaning anything!

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 02/04/2022 02:02

I saw "from the get go" on a thread earlier about Will Smith.

desertgirl · 02/04/2022 09:41

@SpotALeopard I’m in house too, but with a fair few corporate transactions on my plate - tbh it would probably irritate me too in respect of a straightforward two party commercial agreement, as irrational as that sounds!

Squidlette · 02/04/2022 09:45

@ImJustMadAboutSaffron

There's a great Dave Gorman episode about language, where people use 'from the gecko', with presumably no thought to wtf that would even mean.
BustyLaRoux · 02/04/2022 13:00

These are wonderful!!! My DP works from home and uses these all the time. I love to listen in and giggle to myself because he really does sound like a cross between Alan Partridge and David Brent! Regular offenders are “bandwidth”, “going forward”, “pushback”, “leaning in” (which always makes me howl internally), “pinging of emails”and “slide deck”. I think he thinks he sounds very important and businessy! My personal favourite is when someone has a job title and heads something up. But instead of referring to them by their name or even THE Senior Executive of Bullshit Administrator, he will say to people “you need to contact SEBA” as if that’s an organisation or a person’s name. So instead of Catherine, or whatever, this person just becomes known by their new name, Seba! 🙄😂😂

BustyLaRoux · 02/04/2022 13:04

Oh god yes also “diarising” and “reach out”. Everyone is always leaning in and reaching out!!! Sounds like something I do in yoga!!!!

yellowsuninthesky · 02/04/2022 13:19

Slight tangent. "See it say it sorted". Who on earth came up with that one. Maybe we need a new thread for silly corporate and customer-facing slogans.

JaninaDuszejko · 02/04/2022 14:34

@ImJustMadAboutSaffron

I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one who hated this phrase. I'm laughing at 'from the gecko' though.
Augustmummy · 06/04/2022 19:55

Good morning and I trust this email finds you well,

I thought this would be a great opportunity to reach out to you to ensure we align our thinking and get our ducks in a row before this afternoon's team meeting.

Going forward, let's touch base for an idea shower so we can flesh out how to best leverage our goals and hence minimalize our current work stack.

Kind regards
The really annoying person in the office

myblackbirdsbeadyeye · 06/04/2022 20:31

CEO used ‘no white smoke’ (approval as signalled by white smoke to tell the world a new pope has been agreed)
