"Work stack" - FFS

CovidCanDoOne123 · 30/03/2022 19:57

So in addition to the likes of 'reach out', 'align'; 'ducks in a row', 'going forward' etc etc etc...we now have 'work stack' instead of workload.

Losing the will to live.

Ps no AIBU. The use of 'work stack' is unreasonable.

Lived experience; low hanging fruit; circle of trust.

No. Just no.

RagzRebooted · 31/03/2022 18:42

Thanks to this thread, I have used 'dinosaur's picnic' at work today. I hope it catches on!

Animum2 · 31/03/2022 18:42

One that has popped up recently from a manager

Give me a high level explanation

Context is basically how would a new starter learn something

We have procedures for everything and a training schedule, noo high level explanation needed imo

ThingsThatMakeYouGoHmmmmmmmmm · 31/03/2022 18:46

MN user dislikes phrase ' ducks in a row'. 😁

AllSo · 31/03/2022 18:48

I am comfortable with a light touch technical jargon type of bushes speech, happy with Agile language, going forward, touch base.

Scrum is fine as it's an official term in agile project management but hate huddle, which to me is a sales term. Low hanging fruit is just yuck, again sleazy sales lingo. I've never heard 'Ducks in a row' at work. Let's Park that Idea is ok. A swim lane diagram can be really useful but the term sounds shit. Let’s idea shower or flesh out something is just revolting. Love 'it's a picnic problem' so condescending Grin
I find Let's jam the toast quite funny, mainly as it reminds me of a scrumptious hot buttered toast with delicious home made jam.

AllSo · 31/03/2022 18:49

with a light touch technical jargon type of business speech Grin

Maybe it's all bushes speech.

@Grilledaubergines

Oh how I want to go back 20 years to a time with none of this bollocks.
This bollocks started back in the 1980s😎
PheonixGlitterRepublic · 31/03/2022 18:57

We’re always reaching out, staying visible, pushing back and taking others along with us... it’s infuriating.

DoWhatYouLike · 31/03/2022 18:58

This is my favourite phrase - it's a "load of old bollocks" Grin

Isaidnomorecrisps · 31/03/2022 19:04

I’m quite senior at work and our lovely general counsel (lawyer) both of us women try to get the word “snip” in wherever we can and then watch the other try not to snigger.
It’s quite easy and very juvenile we know - there’s a snip function on Microsoft and I use it all the time 🙂🙂

SqueezeboxNellie · 31/03/2022 19:08

I like play around with these silly phrases - and I find if you say things quickly and with a straight face you get away with it. Hence 'let's get our ducks in the bath/oven', 'we don't want to reinvent the biscuit' and, when asked if I could work with an analyst from a supplier company 'we get on like a mouse on fire'. OK the last one is not actually business speak but it was still fun. I also insert random words into project reports I think no one is going to read. The random 'geranium' in the middle of the middle page of a report I wrote about a pandemic response project remains undiscovered to this day,

I8toys · 31/03/2022 19:08

Meeting cadence makes my blood boil.

tkwal · 31/03/2022 19:09

I'm sorry. I know all these business types are desperate to remain relevant to the people they aim to inspire every day but 2 phrases I've just read gave me a case of the giggles.
When anyone says "touch base" I get an image of my elderly aunts playing a party game that involves dancing around a standard lamp that my mum had ( green marble with a brass base and floral lampshade)the last one touching the base when the music stopped , won.
"Ideas shower" sorry for any mental distress or nightmares caused...An image of Donald Trump leaps into my head , all red-faced and clutching a towel waiting for a particular type/colour of shower he is reported to have enjoyed with "professional women" on a regular basis. Allegedly

IlFaitBeau · 31/03/2022 19:14

“Touch base” gives me an immediate vision of someone gently stroking someones dick under the table.

“Low hanging fruit” somehow a gives me visions of puss filled boils that are red raw and about to burst. And also a bowl of mangoes I forgot on a shelf in our old house for a few Months in the summer and the results were… unpleasant.

I understand that I obviously have a problem with langauge 😂 but also can we abolish these phrases please.

A million thank-you's for starting this thread - I've had a roughish day and wasn't feeling very light hearted, but I've just giggled, hee-hawed and spluttered all over my keyboard reading this thread. I feel good now!

You are a Legend.

1forAll74 · 31/03/2022 19:23

Where does all this nonsense come from,,, Probably from the USA I guess..!

purplesequins · 31/03/2022 19:28

I hear you on 'work stack' and raise you to 'backlock' which doesn't mean what most people think it means in project management...

Ps no AIBU. The use of 'work stack' is unreasonable.

Going forward, do you think it will impact on you?

TryingPrettyHard · 31/03/2022 19:40

Well I don't mind the ones which are basically just metaphors, eg 'mental load' but I've just gone back to employment after a career break and saw 'synergy' (which I thought was a joke word) in a presentation.

I might need to reflect via an After Action Review to be sure on that

oops, spelling...

a backlog is scheduled work.

yep, doesn't make sense to me either.
