"Work stack" - FFS

CovidCanDoOne123 · 30/03/2022 19:57

So in addition to the likes of 'reach out', 'align'; 'ducks in a row', 'going forward' etc etc etc...we now have 'work stack' instead of workload.

Losing the will to live.

Ps no AIBU. The use of 'work stack' is unreasonable.

@SpiderinaWingMirror

Oh yes and granularity. You mean detail?
But why use a measly two syllables when you could have five at your disposal? 😉
desertgirl · 31/03/2022 20:58

‘Holding the pen’ (or pencil. I suppose) has been around for years among corporate lawyers; it is quicker than saying ‘is responsible for producing the next marked-up draft’ which is all I’ve heard it used for….. has it expanded beyond that?

RantyAunty · 31/03/2022 21:03

I plan to start making up these phrases and see how fast someone else starts using them.

Oldmrswasherwoman · 31/03/2022 21:06

Deep dive makes me want to scratch my own skin off. Also appetite - the CEO doesn't have an appetite for that. Revolting.

Me too. It's a new twist on Bullshit Bingo Wink
cakeorwine · 31/03/2022 21:19

So glad our workplace isn't into this kind of language.

I keep seeing adverts for scrum masters - and sometimes think we might be a bit behind the times in our approaches.

Maybe we need someone to come in with a marketing background / corporate background and see how long it takes them to 'break' when no one gets them.

BobbyeinArkansas · 31/03/2022 21:20

I use them all. Even “reach out” un ironically.
I’ve sold my soul to the corporate devil.

zabindya · 31/03/2022 21:20

My team has moved on from "decks" and now calls them "loops".

"Hey, could you pull up the strategy loop"

I don't know why. Are they planning to cycle through the presentation endlessly like some kind of PowerPoint circle of hell?

cakeorwine · 31/03/2022 21:21

@Joni234

Optics - something visual that can be viewed on various ways. Eg video, picture, online, in print, memes, etc etc. Usually surrounding an event or person. E.g."Will Smith won at the Oscars but let's face it the optics were terrible"
Not even visual.

I would say it's something related to an organisation - could be an event or something they do or happens to them and the way it comes across doesn't appear good.

baffledbunny · 31/03/2022 21:49

Love this thread so much!

I've seen "across" used a lot lately, especially by the marketing department. As in, "why don't you (dump it) on Baffled, she's across that area of work".

Makes me feel like a bridge or something.

I hate "reach out" too, especially when someone says "thanks for reaching out" - no, I just asked you a question. I didn't reach my arms out through the computer to you....(wish I could though, just to throttle you haha).

Socialistmisanthropist · 31/03/2022 22:01

Fucking Deep Dive.

I just think Muff Dive...

LCHH123 · 31/03/2022 22:08

During lockdown I had a client who asked for a Zoom meeting "so we can see the whites of one another's eyes."

Kirstos1 · 31/03/2022 22:21

'Let's peel the onion'

Er, lets not.

Appolonia · 31/03/2022 23:04

In my company, it's "let's double-click on that point". I presume they mean, dig into it in more detail.

And the "meta point" to talk about the key point/takeaway of a discussion.

ddl1 · 31/03/2022 23:20

@LCHH123

I've only ever come across that expression in the context of a general in the American Revolution telling his troops not to shoot 'until you can see the whites of their eyes'. I hope your client didn't expect that you'd be shooting each other!
Icandefinitelydothis · 31/03/2022 23:28

This thread has made me chuckle 😆

Ramping things up and down bugs me but my biggest irritation is when people add -ize to the end of any given word, presumably because they think it makes them sound brighter. It doesn’t. It makes them sound like a tool.

E.g shall we verbalize our ideas? Erm… do you mean shall we say them?

Some aren’t even words!!

SpotALeopard · 31/03/2022 23:35

@desertgirl - I am a lawyer (in-house, not corporate) and it is used in the context you describe, so I’m probably being unreasonable in my dislike of this phrase. Despite my role, I only know one person who uses this expression - all the lawyers I speak to in customer and supplier organisations manage to talk about who’s doing the next mark-up without ceremonially bestowing pens on people - but, my goodness, does this one person use it. They’re also into lots of other irritating business babble, such as talking earnestly about taking us on a customer experience journey.

UnderTheSkyInsideTheSea · 31/03/2022 23:39

@MissLucyEyelesbarrow

The NHS uses most of these, then has a set of especially irritating phrases that are all its own:

'We are where we are'. Translation - we're in a fucking mess and we all hate each other, but let's make a vague effort.

Resilience. Translation - we know your workload is untenable and you're on the verge of breakdown, but we'd like you to think it's because you're emotionally deficient.

I work in the NHS and this made me laugh like Muttley. So true. Grin

YANBU
side note I'm now going to have this in my head today....

The Work Stack is a little old place where
We can get together
Work Stack baby
Work Stack baby
Work Stack baby
Work Stack baby

... so cheers

Littlemissamy · 01/04/2022 09:22

I’ve started saying “I’ll BING you an email”, or “BING me a message” to people who say ping. It’s just subtle enough to cause subconscious confusion.

mummyhat · 01/04/2022 11:58

‘Deep diving’ agree🤮 is the verbal equivalent of underpants hanging over the arse of baggy trackies.

Push-back equates to an aircraft setting off from its parking space, but is now defined as resistance to something? Contradiction in terms.

“piece of work” - nope. Cake comes in pieces.

FiniteSagacity · 01/04/2022 12:07

Amazing. Would it be wrong to go into a meeting room early and create a mysterious one for the colleagues about to join me in a meeting Grin

FiniteSagacity · 01/04/2022 12:10

Sorry that was for @TheFoldOx on page 8. Or for everyone who works in a wank word environment!

TheFoldOx · 01/04/2022 12:13

@FiniteSagacity, not at all, in fact I'd strongly encourage you to do it!

Reminds me of ‘plate of food’ on Masterchef, that bugs me too.
