"Work stack" - FFS

377 replies

CovidCanDoOne123 · 30/03/2022 19:57

So in addition to the likes of 'reach out', 'align'; 'ducks in a row', 'going forward' etc etc etc...we now have 'work stack' instead of workload.

Losing the will to live.

Ps no AIBU. The use of 'work stack' is unreasonable.

What does 'optics' mean? And how do I use it in a sentence?

picolata · 31/03/2022 19:53

And what do these mean too??

co-synthesis(e), strategic compass, burning platform, bleeding edge, strategic congruence and lower-tier vortex.

balalake · 31/03/2022 19:55

OP should we start a thread with such ridiculous expressions and see if we can get one for every day of the year?

TheFoldOx · 31/03/2022 19:55

A senior manager in my office picks these phrases up, and uses them without any thought. We now have a game to invent stupid, meaningless and un-necessary phrases, use them in emails and reports to this manager, and then wait to hear the manager using them. It normally takes a day or less. Today's was "cognisant of the need to keep you in the same data district" - i.e. this is an update.

TheFoldOx · 31/03/2022 19:58

@picolata

They're meaningless, which is why my team collect these phrases and enter them on the office bullsh*t board. The worrying thing is that they're not made up by us, we take them from emails, presentations, conferences, etc.
NotquitewhatImeant · 31/03/2022 20:01

Onboarding. Hate it. Interesting no-one has said moonshot so far, BoJo and Matt Hancock obviously killed that one off. Reach-out is still my least favourite though.

Shazbagz · 31/03/2022 20:01

MakeItSoSo -me too GrinGrinGrin

fetchacloth · 31/03/2022 20:08

I hate the expression 'silo'. Angry
A silo belongs to farming not an office.

RB68 · 31/03/2022 20:09

Burning bridge is at least 30 yrs old. But yes in a multilingual environment these are killers so I try not to use them - plain English.

RB68 · 31/03/2022 20:10

silo is another that is abut 30 yrs old as well - and jeez haven't we got rif of that sort of thinkink yet

DadDadDad · 31/03/2022 20:11

Look, do you want me to come out of my silo or stay in my lane? Confused

MasterBeth · 31/03/2022 20:23

@Lilac57

And since when did a PowerPoint presentation become a “Deck”. I just don’t understand taking something that has a literal, clear, meaning (a bit like workload), and giving it an alternative name that makes no sense.
Read the thread. You are wrong.
LidlMiddleLover · 31/03/2022 20:24

@IlFaitBeau

“Touch base” gives me an immediate vision of someone gently stroking someones dick under the table.

“Low hanging fruit” somehow a gives me visions of puss filled boils that are red raw and about to burst. And also a bowl of mangoes I forgot on a shelf in our old house for a few Months in the summer and the results were… unpleasant.

I understand that I obviously have a problem with langauge 😂 but also can we abolish these phrases please.

Low hanging fruit makes me think droopy bollocks
Notaordinarygirl · 31/03/2022 20:26

My job boss loved saying "moving foreard" all the time. It was so annoying. Whether you are being reprimanded or congratulated it always end with moving forward, ie, you did well with sales target but moving forward we need to aim higher.
It's such a passive aggressive comment

MasterBeth · 31/03/2022 20:26

@TryingPrettyHard

Well I don't mind the ones which are basically just metaphors, eg 'mental load' but I've just gone back to employment after a career break and saw 'synergy' (which I thought was a joke word) in a presentation.
Well, it’s not a joke word. It’s a long established word derived from the Greek. www.etymonline.com/word/synergy
FlibbertyGibbitt · 31/03/2022 20:31

@wellitoldyouso

"I do not have the mental bandwidth to deal with this" said by my manager.
Hilarious 🤣 I might start saying this 🤣🥳🥳🥳
Joni234 · 31/03/2022 20:31

I came for this to! You're really speaking to the emerging phrases space, the not-quite mainstream demographic,a bit left field.

Firstruleofsoupover · 31/03/2022 20:33

A while ago it was "throw all the pieces of the jigsaw in the air and see what comes down" where I worked. Er - all of them would come down. I think he meant try and think around the problem and come up with some ideas to solve the problem. So say that then eh, say that then!

Joni234 · 31/03/2022 20:35

Optics - something visual that can be viewed on various ways. Eg video, picture, online, in print, memes, etc etc. Usually surrounding an event or person.
E.g."Will Smith won at the Oscars but let's face it the optics were terrible"

purplesequins · 31/03/2022 20:38

@balalake

OP should we start a thread with such ridiculous expressions and see if we can get one for every day of the year?
I would by the calendar Grin

a bit like the cardboards phrase generatos of the 90s

skodadoda · 31/03/2022 20:41

*I thought 'mental load' was a pretty apt description! Especially with regards to mothers in any type of family unit. I.e. a simple way of expressing the one who remembers the P.E kit for Tueday, the reading book for Friday and the trip to the museum next month.

Surely I can't be alone in thinking this*

I agree with that. It describes the organising burden that falls mainly on women.

AgentCarterRocks · 31/03/2022 20:43

@Madmaxxy

I used to work somewhere where they referred to your workload as 'what you have on your pad' i.e. 'have you got too much on your pad'?' 'whats on your pad today'? Drove me nuts!! YANBU
Oh I'd be dangerously tempted to say I don't use pads, I'm more of a tampons girl!!
Winterflower84 · 31/03/2022 20:44

Pre-prepared task 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

SockFluffInTheBath · 31/03/2022 20:45

‘Mental load’ makes it sound onerous to remember P.E kit for Tueday, the reading book for Friday and the trip to the museum next month though, and that’s a little bit dramatic. I do it in our house too but everything just goes on the kitchen calendar or a reminder on my phone. It doesn’t really compare to the mental load that comes with my job or specific family difficulties.

Joni234 · 31/03/2022 20:47

Re 'deck' and PowerPoint presentation. I have noticed a shift with this in recent years. It seems that if you are presenting it is still a presentation. If you are simply creating it, editing it or sharing it then it is deck. Which actually makes more sense.

With these phrases one half of my brain is getting the rage and throwing things. but the other half knows they are often good ways to smooth out difficult things and make work conversations less blunt and confrontational.
