To ask what you have at home

Was talking with a colleagues yesterday about safety devises at home and they made out that I was kind of over the top with things I have.
They got the house alarm and ring cameras for security outside and things like first aid kits and co2 thingy but started laughing when I told them I had fire extinguishers upstairs and downstairs, with fire blankets in kitchen.
Just wondered what people have in their homes. I'd assumed everyone would have everything they could Hmm

Heat fire and CO2 detectors
Ring doorbell
Usual medicine cupboard supplies (paracetamol, plasters, calpol etc)
I have a first aid kit in my car that came with it
DP is a medic so has quite an extensive first aid kit.

We also have a wonderful elderly neighbour who is literally neighbourhood watch for the whole street! Nothing or nobody can get past her.

SockFluffInTheBath · 30/03/2022 09:44

@StillRunningWithScissors

First aid kit, fire alarms, cow detectors, fire extinguisher (in kitchen), baseball bat ;-)

Had been thinking about a fire blanket for kitchen as well.

I want some cow detectors 🤣
SockFluffInTheBath · 30/03/2022 09:46

@Queenoftheashes

We took a couple of years to get a fire alarm. Not sure about co2 but do you need it if you don’t have gas? I think there’s a first aid kit somewhere. I do try to have plasters and painkillers in.
We have a CO2 monitor in the utility room because we used to have an oil boiler inside. It’s now out in the garden but the monitor’s not been taken down.
Howareyouflower · 30/03/2022 09:47

I'd advise everyone to follow you as far as fire blankets are concerned. I've used one twice, and it saved my workplace kitchen. Once when a frying pan set alight, and once when a nearly new toaster developed a fault and set alight. The outside casing melted like cheese. My ex husband also went to a fire where a person was saved from more serious burns when a fire blanket was used to put out the fire when their clothing set alight.

Tiger401 · 30/03/2022 09:48

Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Fire Alarms
First Aid kit
Ring door bell
Ring camera at back
Camera in hallway that sound activates (dog camera originally)

LatteToday · 30/03/2022 09:53

Standard things: We have smoke alarm, CO alarm, burglar alarm with panic buttons. Fire blanket in kitchen. 2 fire extinguishers upstairs and downstairs.

Enhanced things:
Burglar alarm/panic buttons linked to police call centre.

CCTV outside the house.

Video door entry system.

Reinforced doors and windows.

Firebomb proof letter box.

Do I win?

yellowsuninthesky · 30/03/2022 09:55

Smoke alarms, CO alarm, a fire blanket in the utility room/kitchen.

Innocenta · 30/03/2022 09:55

@LatteToday Haven't seen anyone beat my AED yet Grin

C152 · 30/03/2022 09:59

I have 2 fire extinguishers, like you, and a first aid kit; but those are the only 'safety' things.

FabFitFifties · 30/03/2022 10:03

All those with C02 detectors must have them going off all the time, or is nobody allowed to exhale in those houses? Holding their breath waiting for the next emergency maybe? 🤣

DoobryWhatsit · 30/03/2022 10:06

Fire extinguishers, blankets, smoke alarms, CO monitors of course.

But we live rurally, so most of the time I don't even lock the door. Tbh when we lived in town we were burgled, and the cost of replacing the patio doors was far greater than the cost of replacing the few items taken. We'd have been better off not locking those doors as well! (we weren't in the house at the time)

CounsellorTroi · 30/03/2022 10:06

House alarm
Smoke alarm
Outside security light
Paracetamol, plasters etc.

That’s it.

VestaTilley · 30/03/2022 10:07

You sound like you’re being sensible and cautious.

We have the usual family medicines in the medicine cupboard, plasters and such like. That’s about it.

We moved in to our first house in Oct, there’s not an alarm and we can’t afford to put one in, we don’t need a Ring doorbell at the front because we’re right on the street with a glazed door, and we’ve got nothing worth stealing anyway.

We have smoke alarms on every floor, I think that’s about it. We’re not far from a hospital and fire station though, so in an emergency we can generally get help quickly.

poshme · 30/03/2022 10:07

@Queenoftheashes you need a CO monitor if you have gas or oil or a fire or woodburner.

Chely · 30/03/2022 10:10

Sounds pretty standard to me. We also have fire extinguisher/blanket in each of our cars. Icarry a little pack of plasters, anti-bac wipes and gloves in my handbag too, handy with kids.

LaurieFairyCake · 30/03/2022 10:10

What's the Co 2 detector for if you don't have anything that produces it.... Confused

I have a gas boiler only 4 years old and is serviced every year - that's it

Sewingsusan · 30/03/2022 10:11

All of those and fire escape ladders and smoke masks (give you 15 mins breathing time).

KarenOLantern · 30/03/2022 10:11

The fire extinguishers are the only things that I think most people don't have (I'm pretty sure by law rental properties have to have carbon monoxide alarms, and first aid boxes will be regularly used if there are children in the house), but tbh it's not like the fire extinguishers take up a massive chunk of your time or mental energy, they just sit there. And anyone who has any experience of fires will say they are worth having! Yes, house fires are rare, but they do happen and they can destroy people's lives when they do.

My ex's parents were petrified of everything - theft, fires, car accidents - to the extent it took over their lives. For example they would sit with the windows closed on a hot day when they were in the house because they were terrified of burglars (even though they lived in an extremely safe location) and wouldn't let me plug an electric fan because they were convinced it would catch fire Hmm. THAT is excessive. But yours are just sensible precautions.

LatteToday · 30/03/2022 10:12

@Innocenta but can your AED automatically put out a fire that someone pushes through your letter box?

I forgot the first aid- have burns kit, first aid kit, oxygen monitor, needles kit, thermometer etc
We don’t have a stab kit but we do at work, and currently waiting to hear if we need one at home.

etulosba · 30/03/2022 10:12

Do you sell drugs?

It’s a ridiculous new unenforceable legal requirement in Scotland now 🙄
LatteToday · 30/03/2022 10:14

No! Married to an MP…

poshme · 30/03/2022 10:15

@LaurieFairyCake if you have a gas boiler you should have a CO monitor.

bunfighters · 30/03/2022 10:15

LatteToday where do you live? How do you live?
