To ask what you have at home

Was talking with a colleagues yesterday about safety devises at home and they made out that I was kind of over the top with things I have.
They got the house alarm and ring cameras for security outside and things like first aid kits and co2 thingy but started laughing when I told them I had fire extinguishers upstairs and downstairs, with fire blankets in kitchen.
Just wondered what people have in their homes. I'd assumed everyone would have everything they could Hmm

We have fire extinguishers in kitchen, laundry, garage and our cars, co2 alarms, smoke alarms, first aid kits in house and cars, house alarm, security cameras...

Yoyokitten · 01/04/2022 12:12

Sorry OP but cow detectors really made me laugh😁😂

TheBigPeach · 01/04/2022 12:29

I thought most people had alarms these days 🤔
We have the fire blanket, it came in a kit with an extinguisher but this has expired and I’m not sure how to dispose of it. First aid kit and all the rest you mentioned.

TheBigPeach · 01/04/2022 12:31

‘Nosy neighbours’ yes we have them too and glad of it.

SocksAndTheCity · 01/04/2022 12:34

Smoke alarm and spyhole in my door, plus video entry at the main door. And plasters Smile.

SoulOfPaddington · 01/04/2022 14:04

@StillRunningWithScissors

First aid kit, fire alarms, cow detectors, fire extinguisher (in kitchen), baseball bat ;-)

Had been thinking about a fire blanket for kitchen as well.

Wow! Do you live on a farm?? Are they that dangerous Shock
BobISMyUncle · 01/04/2022 14:14

I have everything, including pull cords. Sadly, the pull cords are in completely the wrong places, i.e. if I fall in the shower, the pull cord is above the sink. But hey. I live in sheltered accommodation, so that doesn't count, probably! Still makes me smile though, that if I do have a fall, I need to fall within reach of a pull cord. Which I have tied up, out of the way, in case I pull it accidentally. Just for info, I do not need to be living in supported housing. I was housed here as an emergency by the council, because of a violent attack, and although I do not need this type of housing, it's proving difficult to move elsewhere. I'm "adequately" housed. And I am. Except I do not need the adaptations, the grab rails, the lowered light switches, etc. I feel bad that I'm using this property, when there are other people who could be using it instead. People with additional needs, that I don't have yet.
Sorry peeps. Bit of a rant

BobISMyUncle · 01/04/2022 14:31

OH! AND! My peephole is about 4" too high, so I have no chance of peeping, unless I stand on something. I have asked if it can be lowered, but I was advised that it couldn't because it's a fire door. Of course it is. Silly me. We have no first aid kit(s) available. No defibrillator that I'm aware of. We've also been asked to attend a fire drill, (attend? not the right word?) even though most residents here are flat bound. It has previously been a "Stay Put" policy, but I think, in the light of Grenfell, Panic Mode has set in, and we now have to evacuate. Evacuate to where, exactly, remains to be resolved. Hilarious! the car park? Where the Fire Service would park? Obviously not there. Alternative suggestions? on a post card, very please.
Sorry. Rant over. Mostly. I'm ranting for people here, who can't rant for themselves. I have enough rant for everyone here, and for my fellow vipers x

BobISMyUncle · 01/04/2022 14:37

Cow detectors. I LOVE that. Appeals to my warped sense of humour. I have visions of me, hiding in a hat disguised with trees growing out of the top, hiding from cows and pointing a cow detector at a ... cow. Brilliant. Sorry, I know that's meant to be serious, I know that cows can be dangerous. Sorry, sorry. It just made me smile. Cow Detectors. Sorry. Still makes me smile though, I can't help it. Sorry.

LadyDanburysCane · 01/04/2022 15:22

We have a burglar alarm, smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detector and first aid kit.

Fire extinguishers need to be serviced and/or replaced plus the complication of having the right type for the right fire and knowing how to use it. If you have a fire you get out….

Incacat2 · 01/04/2022 16:25

I have fire extinguishers and fire blankets upstairs and down after a kitchen fire. Best thing is to get out, However, they make me feel more secure.

My husband thinks I'm a prepper. I think I'm cautious. My dr says I have a form of OCD called 'catastrophisastioning' So, therefore, alarm, cctv, ring doorbell, floodlight cameras with alarms, carbon monoxide alarms in any room with gas/fireplace. 2 extinguishers, one on each floor, a fire plan that we regularly talk to the kids about, exit strategy in case of dire emergency, go bags.

In the medicine cupboard the boxes are labelled for what they are, wound dressings, glue, suture kit, painkillers, antibiotics and steroids and then the propanalol/diazapam inhalers, allergies etc
I have a separate kit for the car which is a condensed version that I add to depending on the length of the journey etc, I also have hi viz for everyone, regularly drive in France, triangle, and those glow stick thingys in place of flares.

For when the zombies do come, we have a plan of action and where to visit/loot first. And access to a stocked gun cabinet.

I haven't quite lost it yet with the war with Russia, but covid did me in completely and I bleached the whole house, inc carpets.

I feel more secure when I'm ready for any scenario, which is also why I have a three month supply of water, and dog food. Both things we'd utilise anyway.

Yep, reading it back there's no wonder I'm medicated really... GrinConfused

How many litres is a three month supply of water for a whole family?

Zazdar · 01/04/2022 17:33

And a dog?

Hmm1234 · 01/04/2022 20:01

The fire extinguisher and blankets scream student homes safety lol

IWishIHadNotDoneIt · 01/04/2022 20:57

Smoke detectors
CO detector
First Aid kit
Cameras
2 dogs
In the car
Hi viz jackets
Water
Blankets
Triangle
First Aid kit

bloodynamechangethe3rd · 01/04/2022 21:01

@Zazdar

And a dog?
I base that on 8 x 8oz glasses a day. So 4 500ml bottles a day, or two litres per day per person. I have a rotating stock. The dog is budgeted at 1litre per four days, she's not a huge drinker, and to be honest I'm trying to make her drink more, then I'd adjust accordingly
MooseBreath · 01/04/2022 22:05

We have a smoke detector on each floor, a carbon monoxide detector, a expired fire extinguisher in the kitchen and a first aid kit. I pity any burglar who comes to mine...we have no money or valuable jewellery and everything of monetary value is bloody massive and heavy, thanks to DH's ridiculous computer practices 😂

Bambooshampoo · 01/04/2022 22:23

Trip devices : lego to skid on, the cat to leg you up and probably a spilt orange squash puddle somewhere.

Zazdar · 01/04/2022 22:35

That is a lot of water stored. I’m glad we have a spring a few yards up the lane.

Eloise666 · 02/04/2022 00:07

I always have at 45l water in reserve/rotation and a couple of 15l being deployed at any one time, but I don’t drink tap water as I see it as akin to wilfully being person 7 or 8 in the human centipede. Thankfully moving to a place with spring water so that’ll save a lot of £ as I drink a lot of water 😅

Eloise666 · 02/04/2022 00:11

But when there was a recent pooey water issue which meant people had to queue for bottled water being handed out by council/water company, I didn’t even notice a problem. So I guess inadvertently prepared there.

bridgetreilly · 02/04/2022 03:26

Smoke alarm, fire blanket in the house; first aid kit in the car.
