To ask what you have at home

Was talking with a colleagues yesterday about safety devises at home and they made out that I was kind of over the top with things I have.
They got the house alarm and ring cameras for security outside and things like first aid kits and co2 thingy but started laughing when I told them I had fire extinguishers upstairs and downstairs, with fire blankets in kitchen.
Just wondered what people have in their homes. I'd assumed everyone would have everything they could Hmm

Smoke alarms and I'm sure there's some plasters in the house somewhere

Chatwin · 30/03/2022 07:33

If you lived in a rental property your landlord would be legally obliged to provide the fire safety equipment so its not that odd.

I have no need for an alarm or security camera, no extinguishers or blanket. I do have a good first aid kit though.

RitaFires · 30/03/2022 07:33

I have a 3 storey house so I have interlinked hard wired smoke alarms, they're smart ones so tell you in words what and where the problem is.

I have a fire blanket and extinguisher in the kitchen and a first aid kit and torch on each floor.

I would expect people to have whatever they think is necessary for their house but fire and carbon monoxide alarms at a minimum.

Lemonlemon88 · 30/03/2022 07:34

First aid kit, smoke alarms, bottled water and tinned food for an emergency like an earthquake, cameras and safety lights but no burglar alarm.

SartresSoul · 30/03/2022 07:34

Smoke alarms, carborn monoxide alarm, first aid kit and usual medicines I’m sure most people have. Definitely never owned a fire blanket or extinguisher.

ChiswickFlo · 30/03/2022 07:34

Oh, the cool kids are here 🙄 I've got 1 bottle of cough syrup and that's ott

Smoke, fire and CO2 alarms could save your life op and every home should have them.

(Local fire brigades do free safety checks and many provide free alarms btw so no excuse..)

I also have a ring doorbell and burglar alarm (which means we pay less in house insurance) I have a small fire extinguisher in my car boot along with safety triangle etc.

I've been meaning to get a fire blanket for the kitchen after we had a small oven fire.

You never think it'll happen in your home until it does :(

feckingcovid · 30/03/2022 07:35

Fire alarm, co2 monitor, pain killers and plasters

Turningpurple · 30/03/2022 07:35

CO² detector, smoke alarms.

What I suppose on a first aid kit, but nor actually a proper one. Ita a job with painkillers, plasters, bandages in.

In the car I have a hi vis vest, a flip out warning sign (meant to put it in the road if you breakdown on a blind corner so people know), de-icer, windscreen wash, 2 litres of water and small first aid kit. That's provided by work though. All company cars have ro have the SOS button to call for assistance if you crash and can't reach your phone.

ChiswickFlo · 30/03/2022 07:36

(Oh and a 1st aid kit obviously)

Derbee · 30/03/2022 07:36

We have smoke/heat alarms, and co2 monitor. First aid kit, fire extinguisher in kitchen.

We’ve disabled the house alarm. Cyber security matters to us, so no Ring doorbell etc

Playplayaway · 30/03/2022 07:36

We have a fire blanket in the kitchen. I'm still haunted by a public information ad from my childhood which showed how quickly a chip pan fire took hold. In those days it recommended a damp tea towel. We don't actually have a chip pan though, who does a nowadays?

Ragwort · 30/03/2022 07:37

Actually I lied - we do have fire alarms and a CO2 alarm.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 30/03/2022 07:37

We have smoke alarms and the top shelf of the kitchen cupboard has a random selection of plasters, cough medicine and other over the counter stuff.

TeeBee · 30/03/2022 07:38

Smoke alarm system
Very well stocked first aid kit
First aid kits in cars
Emergency kits in case of war/nuclear attack
Fire extinguishers and fire blanket in kitchen (can't understand why people wouldn't have these)
Cast iron candle holder for nighttime protection, together with a noisy dog and three of us with black belts 😉

Seafog · 30/03/2022 07:38

We have a fire extinguisher, but not a fire blanket.
We also have a 72 hour (for 4 people) emergency kit, a road side break down kit, and a tsunami/earthquake plan (we live on Vancouver Island).

WhiteXmas21 · 30/03/2022 07:39

I have everything you mention except the cameras, but they will be coming soon, I am sure.
Fire extinguishers on each floor, and emergency box upstairs with spare key, torches, dog leads, to let us leave in an emergency.
Have been in a house fire before, so feel happier with these measures in place.

Missingjigsawpuzzle · 30/03/2022 07:41

I have first aid kit, camera doorbell, smoke alarm, heat alarm (for kitchen), co2 monitor, fire blanket, fire extinguisher upstairs and downstairs.

We have CCTV but haven't set it up yet and we do have indoor cameras which were bought for monitoring our dog when they were home alone. They're not needed for this now, but if we went away for a holiday we would set these up around the place.

Front door keys always in a safe but accessible place, windows always able to be opened from inside by room occupant and fire escape routes discussed regularly with the children.

Both work in CJS, both are Fire Marshalls and I think that affects our view of things.

EileenGC · 30/03/2022 07:41

Yes, because everybody on this thread lives somewhere where this is true... My local fire brigade would laugh at me if I even asked a simple question about fire safety. We don't all live in the UK.

gogohm · 30/03/2022 07:42

Ur no we have a front door lock does that count.

I think there's an integral (mains) smoke alarm but never tested it

gogohm · 30/03/2022 07:43

Oh and plasters and ibroprofen

FourChimneys · 30/03/2022 07:44

Smoke detectors
CO2 thingy
Fire extinguisher in kitchen
Fire blanket in kitchen
Security lights
First aid kits in house and car

I have used a fire blanket in the kitchen so happy that we have one there just in case.

CatherineCawood · 30/03/2022 07:44

Smoke alarms (wired) x 3 so one on each floor, fire extinguisher and rope ladder for escape through the window in top floor bedroom, fire blanket in the kitchen, carbon monoxide alarm next to the boiler, first aid kit.

LakieLady · 30/03/2022 07:44

Some plasters and a very old tube of Savlon.

Divebar2021 · 30/03/2022 07:45

We have smoke / CO2 detectors and a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. House alarm is currently not working but had a panic button attached - that was fun when the toddler pressed it! I wouldn’t bother with a fire extinguisher upstairs but I’d get an emergency fire ladder if I didn’t have a way out ( we happen to have flat roofs front and back that we could get out on). We have an OK first aid kit. I think your set up is more than the average household but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.

BrieAndChilli · 30/03/2022 07:46

We have:
Smoke detectors
Fire extinguisher
Fire blanket
Co2 detector
Lots of first aid/medicine
Car emergency stuff
