To ask what you have at home

Was talking with a colleagues yesterday about safety devises at home and they made out that I was kind of over the top with things I have.
They got the house alarm and ring cameras for security outside and things like first aid kits and co2 thingy but started laughing when I told them I had fire extinguishers upstairs and downstairs, with fire blankets in kitchen.
Just wondered what people have in their homes. I'd assumed everyone would have everything they could Hmm

@SmolCat

I'm not even sure our smoke alarms work. Test them today *@Grenlei* (by pressing the test button not by starting a fire).
😂😂😂 I don’t know why that made me laugh so much! I have visions of the house ablaze and the poster stood there analysing the reaction of the smoke alarm 😂
felulageller · 30/03/2022 08:58

CO2 is carbon dioxide, what we all exhale with every breath, put in drinks and is harmless.

CO is carbon monoxide, the lethal gas we have monitors for.

Yes, it was a small mistake, caused by posting too early in the morning when I’m still half asleep. I think it’s obvious what people meant
LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 30/03/2022 09:00

not no alarms, extinguishers...no extinguishers. ffs. It's too early for actual thinking.

orangeisthenewpuce · 30/03/2022 09:00

House alarm, ring doorbells and cameras. First aid kit but I don't know where it is :0)

INeverKnewYa · 30/03/2022 09:00

We had a fire in next door neighbour a few years ago, fire department was here in less than 5 minutes- central London. That was reassuring.

We have:
2 x fire extinguishers
Carbon monoxide detectors
Motion sensing lights
House alarm
Camera for front door
Need fire blanket- have been intending to get one for years
Torches
Candles, bottle water, few long life foods
Pepto Bismol, cough syrup, paracetamol, plasters, alcohol wipes, burn gel

In the car - blanket, umbrella, windscreen cleaner, small first aid kit, de-icer, ice scraper, pencil and paper, breakdown info, hand cream, lip balm, tissues, mints, gum, spare change, a £20 note hidden, sunglasses, few bottles of water, plastic spoons, and about 4 lightening charger cables (We drive a lot)

Not over prepared at all.

Eloise666 · 30/03/2022 09:01

I got fire blankets and an extinguisher at the start of the pandemic when there was talk of fire brigades being potentially unable to attend accidents/putting them/us at risk of covid etc (insania in lockdown 1).
I’m glad I have them now just in case, but haven’t used them.

CO² detectors. Not cow detectors
I want a cow detector!!!Grin

We have smoke and CO2 alarms, the house has been rewired, a ring doorbell and a burglar alarm (only because the previous owner had installed it£
We don’t have any fire blankets etc, as we’ve no smokers and don’t burn candles etc, but I’d never think any less of someone who did have them

Sh05 · 30/03/2022 09:03

Smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarm, security alarm and the usual pain killer and plasters.
Upstairs window is locked but keys close to adult hands as it's a fire window.

TravelDreamLife · 30/03/2022 09:03

I've got a lot! Fire blanket & extinguisher, interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms, security screens (open from inside in bedrooms), security doors, etc. Alarm (it's rubbish, though) I'm looking at camera doorbells. Never leave bag/car keys in open or obvious place (current crime of choice here is to break in to steal keys & take car). More I can't think of right now.

Fire extinguishers seem useless until you need one. Put out a developing kitchen fire with one in our old kitchen (old oven coil exploded) before it became a proper fire.

Let people call you OTT. My colleagues did to me until one got broken into through an open door & one through a window, both whilst home. Then they weren't laughing & were installing security instead & all talking about how safe they're being!

Eloise666 · 30/03/2022 09:03

Also in my car I have a small hammer and garden secateurs in my driver side door - if there’s an accident can smash open the windows and cut my seatbelt off (sounds paranoid but know several people who’s life this would have saved)

BoodleBug51 · 30/03/2022 09:07

Mains wired smoke detectors
Carbon Monoxide detector
Very comprehensive first aid kit (used to be a HCA)
2 very barky spaniels for security alerts

SquirrelG · 30/03/2022 09:10

First aid kit, smoke alarms, bottled water (in case of earthquakes)

XmasElf10 · 30/03/2022 09:11

I have a dog who functions as a doorbell, burglar alarm, ring doorbell and all round bouncer.

I have smoke alarms and a carbon monoxide alarm. I have a drawer with normal household medical supplies (plasters, dressings, bandage, antihistamines, pain killers).

Other than that nothing!

Natsku · 30/03/2022 09:12

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in every room*, fire extinguishers upstairs and downstairs and fire blanket in the kitchen. Escape ladders from each bedroom window upstairs. These are required (not UK) in the kind of old wooden house we live in and a fireman comes to inspect every year to make sure they are all there and in order.

Also have first aid kit, medicine cabinet and drawer with things like pain killers, diarrhoea meds, antihistamines, snake bite kits, tick tweezers, antiseptic creams and suchlike. Have also started to build up our 72 hour kit, got a big water container, tinned foods, always got plenty of batteries, still need to get a battery powered radio.

We do have a security camera out front but I don't think its plugged in any more, really not needed where we are.

Our car is not as prepared as it ought to be, we don't have a car shovel, warning triangle or stuff like that even though we're supposed to. We used to but then we got a new car and I don't know what happened to the gear.

*though how much good they will do me I don't know because one night the alarm in our room went off and my response was to put my pillow over my head and try to go back to sleep!

lifelast · 30/03/2022 09:14

I think what you have is normal. We have a fire extinguishers too.

I have a friend with one of those rescue me's which you can use to shatter a car window. She used it in a real emergency too.

PaleDaffodils · 30/03/2022 09:14

I thought about fire extinguishers but the fact that they need checking every year/topping up has put me off.

allmysons · 30/03/2022 09:15

@StillRunningWithScissors

CO² detectors. Not cow detectors
Oh that's a shame, I was intrigued to know what a cow detector was. Friends of mine have cattle grids because there are free roaming cows in their village
YoYoYoYoSup · 30/03/2022 09:15

It bothers me all the people that don't have carbon monoxide alarms. They're more vital than smoke alarms as carbon monoxide is odourless and deadly more quickly when inhaled. If you learn one thing from this thread please buy 2 (one for upstairs and one for down) or if you're skint ask the fire brigade and they'll supply you with them.

I live in a very safe neighbourhood, we don't need cameras or ring doorbells etc (I find ring doorbells really annoying personally!) So I don't have those, I do have a fire extinguisher in the garage for obvious reasons and 1 fire blanket and everything else listed.

Zazdar · 30/03/2022 09:16

Medicine/first aid cabinet, smoke alarms, CO alarms in all rooms with a fireplace/stove and bedrooms. Fire extinguisher in the kitchen. A couple of days ago my husband was talking about getting another one for the hall.

CO² detectors. Not cow detectors

The point has probably already been made, but it’s actually just CO. CO² Isn’t poisonous and is generated when we breathe.

Gonnagetgoing · 30/03/2022 09:16

Ring camera, smoke alarm, trip switch, medication/first aid box.

cobblers123 · 30/03/2022 09:17

Smoke alarm, large first aid box.

DomesticatedZombie · 30/03/2022 09:17

You really want a cow detector. Nothing worse than being woken up in the middle of the night with bovine hot breath on the side of your face.

This is very sensible. We have glass hammers in our cars too but the secateurs is a great idea.
