To ask what you have at home

Was talking with a colleagues yesterday about safety devises at home and they made out that I was kind of over the top with things I have.
They got the house alarm and ring cameras for security outside and things like first aid kits and co2 thingy but started laughing when I told them I had fire extinguishers upstairs and downstairs, with fire blankets in kitchen.
Just wondered what people have in their homes. I'd assumed everyone would have everything they could Hmm

Multiple smoke alarms, CO2 alarm on each floor, fire extinguisher in each kitchen. We have a first aid kit but it's a bit useless for anything more than the odd scrape.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 30/03/2022 08:07

House alarm which can be set in "zones" so can be "live" downstairs while you're asleep upstairs;
Mains powered smoke alarms in the hall and on the landing (they work as they were set off by some soldering last week);
CO monitor in the garage (because the old boiler was a bit temperamental - replaced last week);
First aid stuff (plasters, dressings, eye drops, painkillers etc) in a specific cupboard in the kitchen and similar in the bathroom;
Warning triangle, small first aid kit and hi-vis in the boot of each car;

Neighbours have CCTV which covers part of our drive, so I suppose it saves us buying one.🤷‍♀️

familyissues12345 · 30/03/2022 08:07

First aid kit (inc extra Epipens), Carbon monoxide monitors, smoke alarms.

We have a fire blanket and extinguisher, but I think the use by date has gone past..

Looking to get a ring doorbell soon

ImInStealthMode · 30/03/2022 08:09

A half-arsed first aid kit, and a fire blanket that was a legal requirement of being present when I bought the flat. Smoke alarms obviously,

I think that's it.

RedSnail · 30/03/2022 08:09

Why do so many people on this thread have carbon dioxide alarms? It’s a carbon monoxide alarm that you want.

I did wonder that.
Roselilly36 · 30/03/2022 08:10

Co2 alarm, smoke detectors, always have ibuprofen tabs & gel, first aid stuff, prescription meds.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 30/03/2022 08:11

Fire alarm/smoke detectors
Carbon monoxide alarm
First aid kit
A barky dog

kimfox · 30/03/2022 08:11

We've got all the above smoke alarms / cctv etc - the "first aid kit" consists of random and probably out of date stuff shoved in a cupboard but we live near shops and an a&e Grin. I must say though we only have one fire extinguisher so now I'm wondering if I should get another one for upstairs... oh and stupidly vocal dogs who I'm certain would alert us to intruders in the middle of the night, before licking them to death.

Sparklingbrook · 30/03/2022 08:12

@Patented

Fire blanket in the kitchen. Surely everyone should have one?
Depends on your cooking style I think.
Whetheryouthinkyoucan · 30/03/2022 08:12

First aid kit, stocked for dogs and horses and we borrow from it for humans, plus standard human meds.

Fire blanket on top of the fridge, smoke alarms, fire extinguisher out on the yard and one in the workshop.

CCTV in the kennels and stables for the horses….. so I can see them from my bed/office whatever.

That’s it.

godmum56 · 30/03/2022 08:14

I don't keep extinguishers because they expire but I do have a fire blanket in the kitchen and somke and CO2 alarms. No chip pan here either. I do basic stuff like keeping keys in or next to locked doors. I do keep a go bag packed with a change of clothes, my meds and the dogs, basic wash and first aid packs. There are always warm coats and space type blankets in the car. In the house things like cash stash and passport are kept together. I have always kept a go bag. I used to travel on ships (oil tankers) with my husband and everybody did so if you had to abandon ship you could do so quickly. I was quite shocked when the Whaley Bridge dam started to crumble and one of the evacuated women said she had left with only the clothes she stood up in. I get not wanting to leave until you have to but wouldn't you have thought that she would have packed a bag just in case?

PrincessPaws · 30/03/2022 08:15

We have a fire extinguisher on both plus a fire blanket in the kitchen

We have a ring doorbell

We have a combined co2/smoke alarm

We have a first aid kit

I don't think any of those are excessive personally, just sensible. People tend to raise their eye at the extinguishers but we have an office full of electrical equipment upstairs and the kitchen downstairs 🤷‍♀️

Im2022 · 30/03/2022 08:15

Smoke alarm and the carbon monoxide alarm on top of the boiler.

I think rented properties have to have the fire extinguishers and fire blankets and fire alarms by law don’t they?

(Btw, it’s CO alarms (carbon MONoxide) not CO2 (carbon DIoxide)..Unless you’re measuring air pollution in your house? Confused)

FluffyPersian · 30/03/2022 08:15

CCTV
House Alarm / Fire angel
3 x carbon monoxide detectors
Fire blanket and Fire extinguisher near the kitchen
First aid kit

.... I didn't even think of having a Fire extinguisher or blanket until I saw Grenfell and after that, I just thought it made sense. I'd rather spend a few quid and not need them, than need them and not have them. Even if we had a fire and they were useless for whatever reason - I still feel happier we have them.

georgarina · 30/03/2022 08:15

Security camera, indoor locks, first aid items (not a kit)
Good idea to have a fire extinguisher, might get one

PrincessPaws · 30/03/2022 08:16

By first aid kit, I mean we have a cabinet with all of the normal stuff in it.

godmum56 · 30/03/2022 08:16

Warning triangle, small first aid kit and hi-vis in the boot of each car;

We are Germans and in Germany a first aid kit is mandatory in each car. I was really surprised that this is not the case here. We once came across an accident and DH wiped the case out opf the boot to other people's amazement. We are on our 3 UK car but not having a kit is just unthinkable for us.

But, you need a first aid course as part of the driving license application as well. Unfortunately no need ot refresh it.

DoorLion · 30/03/2022 08:18

Some first aid items in a box and some others scattered around the house
Smoke alarms
Nothing else
I tell you what I would like though - a Geiger counter

PrincessPaws · 30/03/2022 08:19

And in the car I have a small fire extinguisher, first aid kit, safety hammer and triangle

RedSnail · 30/03/2022 08:19

All a carbon dioxide detector tells you is that people have been breathing and you haven’t opened the windows much. Can’t imagine how that could keep anyone safe in their own home. Baffling why so many have them and only a couple of people have a carbon monoxide alarm when that can kill you.

Isn’t that people don’t understand the difference as it’s literally in the name. Dioxide = 2 oxygen / CO2. Monoxide = one oxygen / CO.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/03/2022 08:20

@StillRunningWithScissors

First aid kit, fire alarms, cow detectors, fire extinguisher (in kitchen), baseball bat ;-)

Had been thinking about a fire blanket for kitchen as well.

Cow detectors would have been handy when we rented a cottage on a dairy farm. They were always wandering into our garden and sticking their heads through the kitchen window.
Sandra2010 · 30/03/2022 08:24

CCTV - we live on the edge of a new build estate and it has proved to be a magnet for opportunistic thieves, we hope that it will deter them not only from ours but our neighbours as well. Burglar alarm we don't use, a box on the wall would be as effective. I think everyone should have a CO2 detector and smoke detectors. We have a full first aid kit because my kids are St John volunteers, and a medicine cabinet with paracetamol, both tablets and suspension, ibuprofen and antihistamines. For fire safety we have a plan everyone knows, and always keep the keys in the door so we can get out quickly if needed.
