To ask what you have at home

Was talking with a colleagues yesterday about safety devises at home and they made out that I was kind of over the top with things I have.
They got the house alarm and ring cameras for security outside and things like first aid kits and co2 thingy but started laughing when I told them I had fire extinguishers upstairs and downstairs, with fire blankets in kitchen.
Just wondered what people have in their homes. I'd assumed everyone would have everything they could Hmm

Smoke alarms, CO detector near the boiler, Ring doorbell, plasters/paracetamol/ ibuprofen.

We don’t have a fire blanket but I’ve been meaning to get one for the kitchen - in fact I’ll order one now while I remember.

My parents lived in a very tall thin terraced house and they’ve recently bought a fold-up fire escape ladder - one of those ones that hooks onto the sill - because there’s no means of escape from the second floor if the stairs are blocked. I thought that was a good idea.

@StillRunningWithScissors

CO² detectors. Not cow detectors
😂🤣
CeeceeBloomingdale · 30/03/2022 07:49

House alarm, smoke alarms, co2 detectors, painkillers, plasters and probably a few other first aid items but not bought together as a set. Also may not be in date.

ChiswickFlo · 30/03/2022 07:50

@EileenGC

(Local fire brigades do free safety checks and many provide free alarms btw so no excuse..)

Yes, because everybody on this thread lives somewhere where this is true... My local fire brigade would laugh at me if I even asked a simple question about fire safety. We don't all live in the UK.

I've just bought a fire blanket (£6)

I can only tell you that - in the UK - local fire brigades do this. They get funding to do it.

whiteroseredrose · 30/03/2022 07:50

No burglar alarm but we have smoke alarms and a emergency ladder that goes over the window so you can escape a fire.

We even did a couple of 'drills' when DC were younger.

That's a really good idea!

Smoke alarms, co2 alarms fire extinguisher in kitchen should have a fireblanket but don't. Those are basic things have basic first aid stuff.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 30/03/2022 07:51

We've got smoke alarms, a Co2 alarm, a basic first aid kit and a fire blanket in the kitchen, that's it.

amatsip · 30/03/2022 07:51

Smoke and co2 alarms
Cctv which links to an app we all have on our phones
Well stocked medicine cabinet for us
Well stocked dog medicine cabinet
Keys left inside of doors always for quick exit in fire. Rather deal with a burglar than fire.
Car has a safety hammer/seat belt cutter and first aid kit.
Code locks on inside of back gate.

ReadyToMoveIt · 30/03/2022 07:53

Fire alarm
CO2 detector
Calpol
Plasters
Adult Paracetamol

Thatsplentyjack · 30/03/2022 07:53

I have a co2 alarm (not working at the moment) and a fire blanket (needed for my job. But that's a bit stupid really because if there was a fire I'm certainly not going to hang around and attempt to put it out, I'll be out of here as fast as I can.
No alarm, no cameras.
We live in a tiny ex council flat. Doubt anyone would bother breaking in here. There are much better houses in our street and the next to choose from 🤣

VeryMuchFlaggingMinty · 30/03/2022 07:54

Smoke alarms upstairs and down, CO2 monitor, meds drawer, although the first aid aspect is a bit lacking but I did invest in a remote thermometer and pulse oximeter when the pandemic hit as I'm asthmatic.

I do always check the doors are locked and remove the keys before bed.

reluctantbrit · 30/03/2022 07:54

Alarm I can set for just downstairs (over night) or for the whole house
Smoke detector with build in carbon monoxide detector wired to the main, so no batteries needed.
Separate carbon monoxide one in the living room as we have a wood burner
Box with plasters, ibuprofen and hayfever tablets in the kitchen
Big box with bandages, plasters, cold medication, cream for twisted ankles etc in the bedroom.
Couple of torches around the house, mainly headtorches for DD's scouting.

We look at getting a ring doorbell or similar as I am back to the office and DH's work travel is starting again.

muddyford · 30/03/2022 07:55

Smoke alarms
CO2 alarm
Well-stocked first aid cabinet
First aid kit in car
First aid kit for working dog.

MojoJojo71 · 30/03/2022 07:55

Smoke alarm and heat alarm (fitted by fire service)
CO alarm
First aid kit

Playplayaway · 30/03/2022 07:56

I should be working but I'm searching for nuclear survival kits and car window hammers

oioimatey · 30/03/2022 07:56

We have two fire extinguishers in the kitchen, and one upstairs. Two carbon monoxide monitors, and two smoke alarms. Thanks for reminding me I need a fire blanket!

NeverAgainSam · 30/03/2022 07:57

Everyone, please get a fireblanket. Set fire to the toaster a while back. Was an easy, safe way to put it out. Very, very glad we had it.

ChiswickFlo · 30/03/2022 07:58

Oh, and I got dh and dc head torches as Stocking gifts last xmas...they have been SO useful already!

(We had a boiler leak and pipe leak...)

whoruntheworldgirls · 30/03/2022 07:58

Smoke alarm, carbon monoxide alarm, security cameras, usual medical stuff like plasters, paracetamol and ibuprofen for both adults and kids.
I probably should get a fire extinguisher though....

newbiename · 30/03/2022 07:58

Smoke alarm , first aid kit, fire extinguisher under the stairs ( from OH business when it closed , not bought specially)

UnsuitableHat · 30/03/2022 08:00

Plasters & Nurofen.

DogsDryWineAndCheese · 30/03/2022 08:02

Paracetamol and a smoke alarm.
Had an incident a few days ago where I needed a plaster and I remembered in a shed I have some old storage boxes with one containing a horse first aid kit. So I managed to fashion a bit of bandage and a cotton wool ball.
So in summary -
Paracetamol, smoke alarm & old horse first aid kit.

I think I’m going to invest in a fire blanket and perhaps some plasters after reading this though.

Patented · 30/03/2022 08:05

Fire blanket in the kitchen. Surely everyone should have one?

Yerroblemom1923 · 30/03/2022 08:06

I worry more about fire more than anyone breaking in (not much worth stealing!). Hammer under bed to break upstairs windows if fire downstairs. Leave keys in doors at night for easy access outside if dark and house on fire. Candles and matches/lighters in an easy to find spot in case of powercut.
We have a house alarm but useless with cats so don't activate it and it kept going off in storms/powercuts when we weren't there and didn't want to annoy neighbours.
We live near moorland and sometimes there are fires in the summer so I occasionally bring cat boxes in to kitchen in case we have to evacuate in a hurry (and kids wouldn't forgive me if I didn't save the cats!)
Plasters in bathroom and TCP.
That's about it.
