To ask what you have at home

Was talking with a colleagues yesterday about safety devises at home and they made out that I was kind of over the top with things I have.
They got the house alarm and ring cameras for security outside and things like first aid kits and co2 thingy but started laughing when I told them I had fire extinguishers upstairs and downstairs, with fire blankets in kitchen.
Just wondered what people have in their homes. I'd assumed everyone would have everything they could Hmm

I don’t have any of those things, but also it absolutely doesn’t make you crazy that you do ☺️

321user123 · 31/03/2022 18:34

Not over the top at all.

Wouldn’t you rather have it than not?

I have a fire blanket and extinguisher.
I also have the stuff to test CO detector and smoke alarms (I have them for work, so use them at home now and then).

I live in a very secure block at height, so no need for alarm or ring, otherwise I’d have those too as well as CCTV.

And of course I also have a first aid kit.

I think answers will vary hugely based on areas, possessions, if one rents or owns etc.

CheesyWeez · 31/03/2022 18:43

Car security - a steering wheel bar you lock on with a key

First aid kit, CO2 detectors, smoke detector, one of those firevases you can chuck at a fire and it smashes

MarchingOnTogether · 31/03/2022 18:45

Im a Childminder so some things are required for my work.
I have:
First aid kit x 2 (work one and an old one that is now our non work one)
Fire extinguisher in kitchen
Fire blanket (requirement for work)
Smoke detectors upstairs and down
CO2 monitor
Mini cctv camera thats rarely set up but we got last summer when kids in the street were being a nuisance

chisanunian · 31/03/2022 18:45

Smoke alarm upstairs and down. We have the usual first aid stuff, plasters, painkillers, antihistamine etc, nothing elaborate.

That's it.

Mirw · 31/03/2022 18:45

What's needed by law. That is it. What else do you actually need? And if there was a fire, the first thing to do is get everyone out and phone the fire brigade. More people are injured or die in house fires because they fanny about with equipment they don't know how to use than do the sensible thing. But your choice!

RagzRebooted · 31/03/2022 18:48

All of them apart from the security alarm/ring doorbell. Fire extinguishers because DH has dangerous stuff in the garage/workshop and also because we have them and the fire blanket left over from caravan days (ours came with them!). But I'd want them anyway.

AnxiousPixie · 31/03/2022 18:50

Everything you have just minus the fire blanket. I have to say I don't get the logic of having a fire alarm but no extinguisher? Are people intending to pat it out with their hands if their fire alarm wakes them up in the night and the house is on fire??

Rewis · 31/03/2022 18:52

2 fire plankets, fire alarm. I wouldn't call it first aid kit but some basic plasters etc.

Thewindwhispers · 31/03/2022 18:54

First aid kit
Fire blanket in kitchen
Small fire extinguisher (builders left it, wouldn’t have bothered otherwise)
Carbon monoxide alarm
Fire alarms

007Stocko · 31/03/2022 18:55

I have a burglar alarm, a Ring doorbell, a CCTV system, a fire blanket in the kitchen, a fire extinguisher in the hallway, a baseball bat by the bed, smoke detectors upstairs and down, a CO2 detector, a well stocked first aid kit in the car, oh, and a defib.

Thewindwhispers · 31/03/2022 18:56

I think they’re intending to leave, if they wake up and the house is on fire. Pretty sure that’s what the firemen recommend, don’t they say ‘get out and call help, don’t try to fight the fire yourself’?

My fire blanket is just for the next time I set my frying pan on fire.

Rosejasmine · 31/03/2022 18:59

Smoke alarm, carbon monoxide alarm, plasters and painkillers. There is a first aid kit somewhere, don’t know where it’s gone.

catsandquails · 31/03/2022 19:02

We have a co2 alarm and smoke alarms. Then a first aid kit (probably all out of date!) a fire extinguisher and fire blanket from when I was a childminder years ago.

Isaidnomorecrisps · 31/03/2022 19:06

I thought cow detectors too ! Is it real

BooksAndHooks · 31/03/2022 19:06

We’ve got wired smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarm, ring doorbell, fire blanket in kitchen and a fire ladder upstairs that hooks on the window. Several first aid kits as they get used a lot for football scrapes.

tiggerandpoohtoo · 31/03/2022 19:11

Erm... I have those and a fire ladder upstairs too for the third floor Blush

2KidsNoTime · 31/03/2022 19:20

Smoke alarm as it was here when we moved in. And maybe some plasters, pack of nurofen and calpol upstairs ...

Gregsprinkles · 31/03/2022 19:24

We have a holiday let and some guests had some candles too close to the curtains (despite being asked not to use candles). The curtains caught fire and afterwards the guests said that without a fire extinguisher it would have been so much worse and they were so grateful for it. We have them in our own house, one in the kitchen and one upstairs. To be fair we got these because we also sometimes let out our actual house, but keep them there for us now. Plus CO2 monitors (you have to have these by law if you have fireplaces, smoke on each floor. I don't think any of those things are weird! And yes, of course a first aid kit!

a1poshpaws · 31/03/2022 19:39

4 small dogs who raise the alarm whenever a sparrow farts. Other than that, nada.

I want a cow detector now, though.

Wrongkindofovercoat · 31/03/2022 19:40

Smoke alarms and some first aid stuff. We don't have any security stuff, other than a dog and a mountain of rubbish that the local scallywag would have to navigate in the dark, plus the usual trip hazards of abandoned shoes, school bags, PE kits etc in the house. Once inside the dog would herd them towards the treat cupboard and everytime they moved, would move into exactly the spot they wanted to move to. A lot of trouble to go to for not a lot of gain Grin

deadlanguage · 31/03/2022 19:40

Smoke alarms upstairs and downstairs, carbon monoxide alarm upstairs. Fire blanket in the kitchen that’s at least 20 years old so not sure if it has moth holes or whatever! Fairly extensive first aid kit. Thumb turn lock and spyhole on front door.

Fire extinguishers at home seem a bit excessive, especially upstairs? Is it an electrical fire one?

deadlanguage · 31/03/2022 19:42

Most people don’t know how to use a fire extinguisher properly so having one is fairly pointless. And if you wake up and your house is on fire in the night then it’s probably too big to be dealt with by a fire extinguisher!
Seleniummillenium · 31/03/2022 19:42

Carbon monoxide alarm, smoke alarm, first aid kit, fire blanket, ring doorbell.

Kate0902900908 · 31/03/2022 19:46

My friend recently had a fire. She had a fire extinguisher upstairs and was told it saved her 15 year old sons life. I bought one the next day off Amazon.
Keep it you just never know!
