To ask what you have at home

Was talking with a colleagues yesterday about safety devises at home and they made out that I was kind of over the top with things I have.
They got the house alarm and ring cameras for security outside and things like first aid kits and co2 thingy but started laughing when I told them I had fire extinguishers upstairs and downstairs, with fire blankets in kitchen.
Just wondered what people have in their homes. I'd assumed everyone would have everything they could Hmm

@custardbear

CCTV, house alarm, Ring doorbell, medication (don't bother with first aid kits as they go out of date), fire alarms, upstairs we have fire escape windows in every room, fire blanket. I can't think of anything else
Wow that seems a lot (CCTV, fire escape windows) for an ordinary house. Do you mind me asking why?
1forAll74 · 31/03/2022 19:56

i smoke alarm and a first aid box..

browneyes77 · 31/03/2022 20:05

@Scarby9

None of those. I have plasters, paracetamol and cough mixture.
Same.

Although the night nurse I have is probably out of date Grin

DomesticatedZombie · 31/03/2022 20:14

gingerhills · 31/03/2022 20:16

CO² detectors. Not cow detectors
I much prefer cow detectors.
BooneyBeautiful · 31/03/2022 20:26

@FrankGrillosFloof

I spent longer than I should have wondering if cow detectors were a thing.
Me too!

2x fire extinguishers in house and 1x in car
2 x carbon monoxide alarms (I did once get CO poisoning so I'm a bit nervous)
Electrically connected smoke alarms on every floor, and fire doors
Heat alarm in the kitchen
Fire blanket in kitchen
Extensive medicine cabinet
First Aid kit in kitchen, bedroom, car, plus I have an extensive mountain first aid kit and also travel first aid kit for my business travel to remote areas (includes sterile kits and tropical meds).
Clear exits at night.
Spare keys in case we need to access DC rooms in a fire by going out and then going in at another part of the house.

I am trained for hostile environments and extensive first aid, due to the day job, so I'm possibly a bit paranoid. Also have security.

LoveFall · 31/03/2022 20:28

We have an emergency kit for two people for three days, kept by the door, mainly because we are in a high earthquake area.

We also have fire and CO monitors and alarms.

LoveFall · 31/03/2022 20:29

Forgot we also have sprinklers.

Hayisforhorse · 31/03/2022 20:33

For us multiple fire extinguishers and extra keys are crucial because the DC have to sleep on a different floor to us, so it could be hard to get them out in a fire and we're not exactly going to leave the DC and sit on the lawn ourselves waiting for the fire brigade to arrive. We also run periodic fire drills, which the DC find endlessly amusing.

Interesting topic.
i have cheap alarm.
Beeper if anyone on my property,( bought as when im in my back garden i cant hear anyone knocking on my front door.)
Fire blanket in kitchen.
CO2 alarms x2
Smoke alarms x2
Fire safe document wallet, with important papers in.
Car seat belt cutter and window smasher in car.
All usual medical stuff.

I loved the cow detectors SO much 🤣

Fire departments always say most accidents occur in the home so I would say, you are doing fine. Forget the comments and don't divulge any more information to them.

Fridgeorflight · 31/03/2022 20:55

We've got all of that except the ring doorbell. I've used a fire blanket once, when a grill tray of fat caught fire at university and it worked a treat.

winterchills · 31/03/2022 21:08

Fire alarms and that's it!

LadyAnglerfish · 31/03/2022 21:23

Two fire extinguishers and a smoke alarm. It’s a condition of my house insurance. Assumed this was common.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 31/03/2022 21:53

Carbon monoxide alarm.
Smoke alarm.
Various painkillers and possibly some plasters floating about, but not a kit as such.

I do want to get some escape ladders as the house we've moved to is very tall with an odd layout that would easily cut off one or the other end of the upstairs.

NazMedusa · 31/03/2022 22:00

Security system with Verisure including fog machines to confuse any would be burglars, Ring doorbell, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and a first aid kit. Think I need to get a fire extinguisher...

LoveFall · 31/03/2022 22:07

Another one here to say it is carbon monoxide (CO) that is the gas we need to worry about in our homes. NOT carbon dioxide (CO2). CO2 is a huge part of our atmosphere. Plants need it to survive. We all breathe it in, then breathe out even more as we exchange CO2 molecules for oxygen in our lungs.

Carbon Monoxide is a poisonous gas that is odorless and colourless. It is produced when something burns. Like the gas in your boiler or range. We need to make sure it does not build up in our homes.

Wow, good job you explained that. No one who made the simple error upthread had any idea 🙄
Echobelly · 31/03/2022 22:23

Smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detector, basic first aid. We should have fire blankets/extinguishers really, they are a good idea to have.
