to think Will Smith should be stripped of his Oscar?

BloodyloveGeorge · 28/03/2022 16:52

The Academy is supposed to have a code of conduct ( post Weinstein) so can take his Oscar away.
Given that this was a blatant assault, and a clear case of toxic masculinity at it's worst, he should lose his Oscar. He's not a role model, his behaviour isn't something that should be celebrated. There should be consequences for this example of violence.
Even a 6 year old knows you can't punch someone because they say something you don't like.

@OppsUpsSide

No, he slapped another equally matched male for making a joke at the expense of his wife 🤷🏻‍♀️
He laughed at the joke then walked up and slapped him across the face. Violent conduct is wrong - always.
CannotShakeIt · 28/03/2022 19:47

@SaxendaSummer

I agree with you op

He's no role model. No dignity in that ugly event at all

Who the hell does he think he is?

To you, maybe not, but to me he is. He made one bad choice.
Hospedia · 28/03/2022 19:47

Being a child rapist doesn't take away anything from Roman Polanski's artistry in The Pianist and being deserving of his Oscar.

Except it does. There should be no separation when someone is in the public eye and/or a position of trust, particularly when that position makes them a potential role model to others and could afford them opportunity to carry on certain behaviours. Polanski continuing to have a career, continuing to make films, continuing to profit, and continuing to be held up as a creative role model for aspiring film makers all the while being openly attracted to underage girls and unapologetic for the multiple rapes he is accused of is the very reason why his work shouldn't be separated from his personal life.

@phlebasconsidered

As a 50 year old woman with autoimmune disorders that regularly make my hair fall out completely, my partner has seen me battle on, cry, refuse to go out, try nonsense cures and god knows what else. He's a mild mannered bloke but if someone took the piss out of my hairloss on global media he might get the rage.

Hairloss isn't funny. Chris Rock is an idiot. Will Smith clearly over reacted but I get how this would have affected his wife. Some days I can't even look in the mirror.

Yes exactly (and I'm so sorry that you have to cope with that).

Not only is it probable that Will's wife really struggles with her self-confidence but there's also a power imbalance there- a man criticising a woman's appearance is just straightforwardly wrong.

Femalewoman · 28/03/2022 19:49

Indeed the wife doesn't need someone to slap people. It implies she is unable to say her piece and express her annoyance/upset and requires her husband to act for her. How ridiculous. I thought society had moved forward but it appears so many women on here think slapping someone who makes a rubbish joke is an acceptable thing to do. The little woman cannot defend herself it appears - I would be VERY EMBARASSED IF my husband did that - not impressed by it at all.

Cocostardust · 28/03/2022 19:50

I'm not actually a fan of Will Smith but I know a lot of blokes in real life who would do the same if you insulted their wife, especially something so deeply personal and to the entire world. My husband would see red and do the same. She's got a devestating medical condition which has turned her life and probably their marriage upside down. It was a bitch slap and by god the little toe rag deserved it.

Sisteragatha · 28/03/2022 19:50

I’m on the fence about the Oscar being removed but the slap…

From a man who prides himself on being zen and in therapy and talking everything through at all times, and promoting self growth and blah blah blah…

What about all the jokes Britney took for being bald. He could have used his very influential platform to stand up for women, not slapped a man.

Clymene · 28/03/2022 19:51

'It's okay to hit someone if they say something you don't like.'

This is why women end up getting murdered by their partners.

This is why the male on male murder rate is so high.

Virtually every woman murdered by her partner said something he didn't like. Virtually every man murdered on the street or in the pub 'disrespected' the murderer.

I have often wondered why we have such an epidemic of male violence. And this event has shown me why. Because so many women and men think that violence is a perfectly rational and acceptable and even appropriate response to someone saying something you don't like.

I am appalled and ashamed to be part of a community that condones this shit. You are contributing to male violence.

Shame on you.

100problems · 28/03/2022 19:52

It was a stunt. A really shit one, but still a stunt.

Denzel just “happened” to be on hand with a Bon mot, minutes later a reference to his film as an excuse, Rock not pressing charges.

Totally agree with the above.

Once you start to justify violence, where does it end?

He defended his wife against an idiot saying twatty things about her. I applaud him. I don't condone violence but Rock was verbally abusing his wife.
I agree with this.

Exactly how I’d feel. It is like “ Little woman can’t stick up for herself, Daddy has to step in”.

Could have been handled so much better.

The unfunny “ Joke” was not on ( First I thought GI Jane was a complement- until googling the joke).

Bimblybomeyelash · 28/03/2022 20:00

I don’t think that they should take away his Oscar, but I definitely don’t think that they should invite him back next year!

Pliudev · 28/03/2022 20:02

It seems there's some history and it's not first time Rock has made offensive remarks about this woman at these kind of events. I don't condone violence but who was the bully here? And what is behind the idea of roasting? I'm afraid I don't understand it. No doubt someone will enlighten me.

Ori18 · 28/03/2022 20:02

@100problems

I watched the clip again and again this morning but the first time I saw it I thought, “this is 100% real.” I honestly expected to watch it & come away thinking it was a set-up so I was surprised to find myself thinking otherwise.

They’re all obviously professional performers & could pull something like this off. But……..Will Smith’s anger when he was shouting at CR was so real it was uncomfortable to watch. And CR has insulted Will Smith’s wife before I think so there’s a backstory there that certainly isn’t devised & adds credulity to the outburst. Unfortunately I do think it was real

Sisteragatha · 28/03/2022 20:05

What made me think it was real was Will Smiths neck afterwards when he was shouting. He was puffed up like the sunburned shirtless guys you see slugging each other outside pubs in the summer.

He hasn’t got acting skills that good, despite the Oscar.

SoP1 · 28/03/2022 20:06

So if someone doesn’t like what you say it’s now ok to assault them? Not saying taking the Oscar away is the answer necessarily, but I find it mind boggling how many seem to think it’s ok to use violence because they feel offended.

Belladonna12 · 28/03/2022 20:14

Losing an Oscar is not the punishment for slapping someone. It's up to the police to charge him.

theworldhas · 28/03/2022 20:14

Physical assault should never be excused. And as much as I sympathise with his wife, men aged 20/30+ never mind 50 have had to laugh off mean jokes about male pattern baldness for decades. They don’t get to slap people.

Horst · 28/03/2022 20:17

Just because they haven’t removed awards before doesn’t mean they can’t start. They have introduced rules and made changes. Changes should be acted upon moving forward.

Also will anit just some nice guy his not exactly known for always being mr lovely if he. Only slapped that pap not long ago too.

He should of been ejected straight after it happened. The slap that he did was at the event for the very award being questioned to be removed I think that should also play part in the choice to remove or keep. He didn’t get drunk at a pub months later he did it just before he got it at the place.

theworldhas · 28/03/2022 20:17

@teaandtoastwithmarmite
I applaud him. I don't condone violence
I don’t condone violence, but I condone violence.

BrightOrangeOrange · 28/03/2022 20:18

I actually think Chris Rock's career will be damaged. It was not a cool thing to say.
