to think Will Smith should be stripped of his Oscar?

The Academy is supposed to have a code of conduct ( post Weinstein) so can take his Oscar away.
Given that this was a blatant assault, and a clear case of toxic masculinity at it's worst, he should lose his Oscar. He's not a role model, his behaviour isn't something that should be celebrated. There should be consequences for this example of violence.
Even a 6 year old knows you can't punch someone because they say something you don't like.

@SwanBuster

Imagine if your partner grew up with a best friend who was a mix of Claudia Schiffer, Greta Thunberg, Marie Curie and Mother Teresa. You would feel pretty insecure too.
Oh ffs, give it a rest.

[quote Davros]Chris Rock made a documentary called Good Hair, all about black/Afro hair including the lengths black women sometimes go to for more "European" looking hair including products, wigs etc. many years of weaves, harsh products, extensions can cause hair to fall out. Maybe that's what he thinks JPS has done? It seems an odd feature to pick on and, by coincidence, have made a documentary about it. Just a vague, badly thought through idea...

Might also be worth bearing in mind the context of the GI Jane movie as well - the key phrase of the movie was her saying to somebody who had tried to mete out a punishment rape 'Suck my dick'.

The whole movie is about her abandoning any pretext of femininity, both physically and mentally, right to the point that she totally identified with being as male as the other soldiers and they felt the same about her.

So, woman with alopecia, with all the emotional distress that causes many - including her - gets likened to a man, or a proto-transman at any rate - hey, everybody, Jada looks like a bloke! Isn't that funny? She deserves it or she'd have worn a wig to disguise it, it must be what she wants people to think...

SwanBuster · 28/03/2022 22:28

@southeastdweller - the only embarrassing thing is that you can’t put yourself in the position of a man who’s life handed him a Sisyphean task.

Wolfie12 · 28/03/2022 22:29

Will Smith should be stripped of his Oscar, he assaulted Chris Rock after he made a lame joke. Violence should not be rewarded.

Morfil · 28/03/2022 22:30

Certainly not when men like Roman Polanski and Harvey Weinstein have kept theirs.
The problem with that though is that the Code of Conduct was introduced in 2017, to stop abusers and alike from receiving awards on a going-forward basis. Either you start enforcing it once it’s introduced, or you refuse to do so until an award winner is deemed ‘worse than Weinstein’.

Daisycrown · 28/03/2022 22:31

Can't get mad about it tbh. So many undeserving winners over the years guilty of far worse imho.... never saw so much salivating about them 🤔.

Yes i watched that

I can’t figure out why he felt that commenting on a black womans hair, or lack thereof, would end well for him

(And no, as ive already said I don’t think Smith should have hit him)

Blossomtoes · 28/03/2022 22:34

Violence should not be rewarded

It’s not. The Oscar is for his acting, not his appalling conduct at the awards ceremony.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 28/03/2022 22:39

They should have drug tested him - he was behaving irrationally.
WTF, why?!
Nothing about his behaviour from what I saw said drugs Confused Hmm
I'm also with the posters who said his work has nothing to do with his actions and Weinstein, Mel Gibson etc nothing happened to them so it would be massively hypocritical.

babywalker56 · 28/03/2022 22:39

I’ll just leave this here👍

to think Will Smith should be stripped of his Oscar?
Quatrophoenix · 28/03/2022 22:41

It was criminal, abusive, appalling and will ruin his career.

southeastdweller · 28/03/2022 22:41

@babywalker56

I’ll just leave this here👍
But for Smith, he may be in breach of the academy's code of conduct, which they set up in late 2017. So your 'argument' is a moot point.

@southeastdweller so before 2017 there was no code of contact whatsoever… and the Oscars have been going on for how long? Yawn what a joke. If they won’t go back in time and take the awards off these peados and sickos then how ridiculous of them to take if off of Will Smith over a slap

Raquelos · 28/03/2022 22:51

Good God the dramatics on this thread.

Sure violence isn't that cool, but Will Smith didn't look cool, he looked like a man who slapped another man in a weird overdramatic way. Pretty sure no one in the real world is going to be copying those moves anytime soon. Chris Rock didn't look cool either he looked like a man who made a shit joke at a woman's expense. So they both looked stupid. Job done, nothing to get worked up about here.

Chloemol · 28/03/2022 23:00

Yes

His behaviour was atrocious ( and no Chris shouldn't have joked as he did but you dont thump someone)

Smith is supposed to set an example, he didn’t he lost it, there are other ways to deal with this

If the consequence of him losing it is to lose the Oscar he only has himself to blame

Angryalot · 28/03/2022 23:01

So many hypocrites on here defending Smith's violence. Would it be OK if Rock was a woman? If this was posted on relationships you'd say ltb. It was assault and is completely unacceptable. Rock is a victim here.

RhymesWithBouquet · 28/03/2022 23:12

As for all of you whose first reaction is "thug" ask yourselves why that word was your go to and why you're so hot for this black guy to lose his Oscar but think that the aforementioned pre-2017 perps and pervs should keep theirs because, timing.... you're outing yourselves beautifully, please tell us more Karens.

For those of you saying Chris Rock "didn't know she had alopecia" well that's all the more reason for him to keep his gob shut. Her struggle with alopecia is well documented. If he didn't know that then for all he knew, she might have lost it due to chemo, making joking about it all the more crass.

The fact that as black man who made a documentary on the subject dammit he should know you don't comment on what a black woman does with what is or isn't on her head makes him look even worse.

So no, Will, shouldn't have hit CR, that was out of order but if they try to take the Oscar from him on that basis, they'd better be ready to take back the awards from everybody mentioned in @babywalker56's post too or the #OscarsSoWhite will be back to stay - no amount of PR or damage control or future black nominees / winners will erase it.

declutteringmymind · 28/03/2022 23:15

Poor Jada.

2 d**heads. 1 making a joke about her health condition, and her own husband then making it all about him and his precious feelings.

I didn't see anyone asking her if she was alright.

Viviennemary · 28/03/2022 23:17

Hasnt it been more or less confirmed that it was a setup. All fake.

Rewis · 28/03/2022 23:20

I don't think he should be stripped from his Oscar. Or if he is then the code of conduct needs to be better defined. Roman Polanski got a standing ovation when he last won. Oscar winners (current and future) will fuck up. Be violent, get caught fir sexyal assaults, go to jail fir drug abuse, comkit tax fraud etc. So is the line drawn at if you do it at the ceremony? If you do it on camera at the ceremony? what is worthy of stripping down from your award. I do think it's from performance and not to the person. It's upto the studios and audiences to 'cancel' the performer in the future but not retroactively.

But I also think will smith should have been escorted out, not get a standing ovation and his awards should have been accepted by the presenter on his behalf.

Rewis · 28/03/2022 23:20

I mean this is assuming it was genuine and not a set up. I'm still a bit unclear on that.

Blossomtoes · 28/03/2022 23:22

Has it? I haven’t seen anything suggesting that.
Ladybyrd · 28/03/2022 23:24

Personally, I think shouting ‘She’s got alopecia, you fucking moron’ would have been a damn sight more effective.

I doubt it would for her.
