to think Will Smith should be stripped of his Oscar?

BloodyloveGeorge · 28/03/2022 16:52

The Academy is supposed to have a code of conduct ( post Weinstein) so can take his Oscar away.
Given that this was a blatant assault, and a clear case of toxic masculinity at it's worst, he should lose his Oscar. He's not a role model, his behaviour isn't something that should be celebrated. There should be consequences for this example of violence.
Even a 6 year old knows you can't punch someone because they say something you don't like.

@samsonn66

sorry to say that the punch/slap was a signal flare to the bigger issue in Wills life. He is a man whos whole life is based upon his image in the spotlight and that is in trouble. His wife openly discussed thier open relationship without his prior knowledge on international Tv. Discussing all the partners and emotional deepness involved. she just declared that Will has been lacking in one department or another for a long time. Will has spent the last 5ys being the butt of many a joke and meme. he lashed out. infact he lashed out on a public stage on a much smaller man. He did feel as if his male pride was being judged on all sides and someone had to get it. while the joke was in bad taste, you sit in the front row infront of a comedian at your own peril. as the say some people court the press and media. the whole Smith family do including thier children. Male mental health is a fragile thing that only NOW is being discussed, however those tears were not fake... they were a sign of a broken man, clinging on... pray for him as he will be in a bad bad place for a long time. Violence is never the start but a end. look at whats realy going on as Will originally laughed at the joke and Chris stated he was just joking...
Absolutely 👊

Calm down @BeHappy91818. The opinion of someone who also has alopecia has to be worth listening to in this context.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 28/03/2022 21:34

White male directors get plaudits, awards and whatnot when they've literally been convicted of rape, have large numbers of traumatised women (and some men) in their wake and clearly have deeply troubling attitudes towards the age of consent.

Black guy gives somebody a slap for picking on his wife? Oh, strip him of his Oscar. Burn him!

When all the white predators have their awards taken away from them and their stars jackhammered out of the ground, then start looking at Will Smith. Until then, get that fucking great plank out of your eye.

Clearly not when they have absolutely no sympathy for Jada and is making bullshit comments about her not wearing a wig.

To be honest I doubt the women on here even has alopecia. We can all write we have it if we wanted.

@Birdy272

But she CHOSE to attend the ceremony bald 🤣 Wow people need to step back and breath the smelling salts 🥴

@Birdy272 I know what you mean. Maybe it was mean, distasteful, crass. I'm not sure anyone knows CR's underlying intent. But I find it strange that anyone can confidently read so much malice into this lame "joke", compared to the actual violence and aggression from WS.

Oh, do go away with your minimising and your assertions that some of us are racist. It's laughable.

‘ "Academy leadership strongly considered removing Will Smith from last night's broadcast following the incident. There were immediate discussions but the Academy decision makers were seated in various spots in the Dolby Theater and couldn't mobilize to make a decision before he won best actor," the source said.’

For anyone wondering why he didn’t get thrown out… that and the fact he is one of THE biggest movie stars in the world.

@DarleneSnell it was much more then a ‘lame’ joke.

Chris deserved the smack he got.

Will's gotten off pretty lightly. If he'd slapped Jerry Seinfield or Ricky Gervais he'd have been escorted off that stage by security.

I’m glad he got his award. He deserves it and I hope he enjoyed the after party too 👍🏻

Nobody deserves a smack. Ever.

DarleneSnell · 28/03/2022 21:43

@BeHappy91818 totally disagree, it was an unjustified overreaction. We don't decide who's "worthy" of a smack just because we take offence.

P.S Will laughed at first.

Daydreamsinsantafe · 28/03/2022 21:45

Jada and her absolute humiliation of her husband is the real problem.
It wasn’t about that joke but about the many that came before it. She’s made a mockery of him and he finally exploded. He was wrong because he took it out in the wrong person. What he needs to do is leave his wife and her red table.

parrotonthesofa · 28/03/2022 21:45

I dunno. It all looked a bit staged to me.

Giraffesandbottoms · 28/03/2022 21:46

It’s pretty depressing how many people on here think assaulting someone is a way to defend your wife. If he needed to do something, why couldn’t he have gone up there, taken the microphone and said “my wife has a medical condition. This is unacceptable”. That would have embarrassed Chris Rock and not made Will Smith look like a violent moron (at best). Having said that, PLENTY of women AND men have been at the receiving end of hideous jokes at the awards shows. It’s just the way it is. Ricky Gervais has never been assaulted.

The fact his son tweeted after the slap “and that’s how we do it” as some sort of bizarre brag is pretty telling, too.

I’m so irritated that he wasn’t immediately escorted off the premises. I also fail to believe Rock’s joke wasn’t run past the script writer’s and producers and approved anyway (whatever anyone will deny now, after the fact).

Giraffesandbottoms · 28/03/2022 21:47

But then I live in disgust/shock that people are able to watch Woody Allen films and listen to Michael Jackson’s music!

100%

Thank you for being one of the few informed people here.

StScholastica · 28/03/2022 21:56

It was a disgusting "joke", more akin to verbal abuse really. How bloody nasty to belittle a woman in front of millions. I dont condone physical violence but I can appreciate that Will Smith just snapped.

RhymesWithBouquet · 28/03/2022 21:57

@Blossomtoes

If you can say you've never done anything in the heat of the moment, never made a mistake, never acted in anger, especially in defence of a loved one, then fair play to you, your halo is in the post

I can say, hand on heart, I’ve never hit anyone. And that’s the issue here. No excuse.

Congratulations, but that's not what I asked, is it? Can you answer the question I actually asked in the negative, while still clutching those pearls hand on heart ?
Also, did you miss the part when I said 2 wrongs don't make a right? I don't think what he did was ok, I just don't think stripping him of the Oscar is a proportionate sanction. Can you see the difference from up there on that pedestal?
SwanBuster · 28/03/2022 21:57

I urge all the people continuously berating him to go and read the history of his and Jada’s relationship - then attempt to put yourself inside his head. Allow yourself to be immersed in the emotions and vitriol that you might speak to yourself if you were him.

‘You’re not man enough’

‘Pac would know how to please her’

Etc

Just try and learn empathy!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 28/03/2022 21:58

Where do you draw the line? If someone in the public eye "publicly humiliates" your partner on Twitter, do you lamp that person the next time you see them?

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 28/03/2022 21:59

You’re not man enough’

And when you smack someone you are man enough?

Giraffesandbottoms · 28/03/2022 21:59

@samsonn66

This is all correct but it just irritates me further that everyone is saying “poor Jada”.

SwanBuster · 28/03/2022 22:00

No, but we are not an emasculated multi-millionaire superstar. He probably had a dual ego - one side feeling like he’s made it, the other deeply insecure that he can’t please his wife.
SwanBuster · 28/03/2022 22:02

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

No! No one is saying that!

What some of us are trying to demonstrate is humans aren’t robots. People snap. There is literally 25 years of feeling not good enough behind that slap.
