to think Will Smith should be stripped of his Oscar?

The Academy is supposed to have a code of conduct ( post Weinstein) so can take his Oscar away.
Given that this was a blatant assault, and a clear case of toxic masculinity at it's worst, he should lose his Oscar. He's not a role model, his behaviour isn't something that should be celebrated. There should be consequences for this example of violence.
Even a 6 year old knows you can't punch someone because they say something you don't like.

Oh wait. There’s a bandwagon for Gervais to leap on.

If (and it won’t make any difference given they allowed it to continue) the Academy withdraw the Oscar, then Rock should also have his fee withdrawn as he breached the Academy code too in his scripted and rehearsed and lawyer vetted roast.

southeastdweller · 28/03/2022 20:53

I’ve already said I think will smiths actions were appalling, but it’s not in the same league as Noel Clarke

A crime is still a crime. Both of them are morons, and very limtied actors.

SofiaSoFar · 28/03/2022 20:55

@isadoradancing123

That idiot Rock deserved a slap
People used to say that about women who didn't have their husband's dinner on the table when he got in from work.
CovidCanDoOne123 · 28/03/2022 20:55

What would the reaction be if Will Smith had walloped a female presenter?!

@BloodyloveGeorge

‘ Rock deserved a slap. He went way too far. Will Smith defended his wife. ‘

Right. And if it’s the wife who goes too far, is
It okay for the husband to give her a slap too? Defend his owner or hurt feelings? Or is mindless, aggressive, male violence only Okay against other men?
And what was he ‘defending’ her from exactly? It’s not like CR had the woman by the throat.

I’d argue that the whole thing had NOTHING to do about Jada at all, and everything to do with WS ego.

Absolutely agree with every word of this
SommerTen · 28/03/2022 20:59

If I was Jada I'd have slapped him myself.

So sick of some of these so-called comedians and the way they get cheap laughs from being cruel to others.

Morfil · 28/03/2022 21:01

Anyone who supports Smith’s actions deserves to be hit in the face.

Not what I actually believe, but based on this thread, this is apparently a valid position.

HRTQueen · 28/03/2022 21:01

No

I would rather a child rapist was stripped of his Oscar (even if he is a great director)

There are far far worse offenders who have an Oscar

Abaababa · 28/03/2022 21:01

This ^^

Shocked at the really —poor— stunning logical leaps used here to defend Will Smith:

  1. oh poor baby Willy someone said something nasty to his boo, so he had to be all manny man and assault him.
  2. Willy shouldn’t get his toy taken away even though he assaulted Chris in front of the whole
school because Jimmy didn’t have his toy taken away in 2010 or Bobby in 1997.

Grow up.

And the Academy Code of Conduct came into play in 2018, after the Weinstein debacle and well before Polanski’s Oscar. So anyone after that should be subjected to the code of conduct in relation to their awards, including Will Smith.

Will Smith was clearly more worried about the impact on his career during his acceptance speech but seemed to forget all about that as he partied in form at the Vanity Fair party because lucky for him Hollywood is too filled with sycophants and peddlers more concerned promoting their asses than giving a shit about decency and morals.

Dumdeedahdumdeedo · 28/03/2022 21:02

But did Chris rock say that about will smiths wife off his own back or was did someone else write that line for him?

Im not sure how it all works but isnt there someone else who writes what the presenter is going to say? Or isnt it on the camera thing infront of him?

Will Smith was out of order he was literally laughing along until he saw that his wife was unhappy. He embarressed himself

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 28/03/2022 21:03

Rock shouldn’t have said what he said

Smith shouldn’t have done what he did

But I don’t think Smiths oscar should be taken from him

SwanBuster · 28/03/2022 21:03

Ok - some context is required.

For the past 25 years - Will has been living under the shadow of Jada’s love for Tupac - the ultimate male specimen. He has always been deeply insecure in that he can’t give Jada what she wants - which is a real man who would defend his lady.

Add to that the innumerable instances of Jada talking about how she needs a man capable of fully satisfying her etc - and the poor geezer has been emasculated.

Here - a (literal) prime time opportunity to show her what he’s made of. He snaps, and years of feeling not enough are poured into a slap.

Now we have the outcry from people who don’t understand the history, or nuance behind what went on. It’s shameful. Educate yourselves please as to the why before judging based on 0.01% of the story.

Initially I thought it was scripted, but then saw the footage. It looks like he simply lost it. It’s the shouting more than anything that looks genuine. Plus, he has zilch to gain from this. He won an Oscar (which he was always going to get) and yet it’s been largely forgotten. The ceremony itself has benefited as its got people talking about it (the reason for my initial scepticism), but Smith gains nothing.
Neverendingdust · 28/03/2022 21:04

Absolutely he should be stripped of it, regardless of where you stand on this what he did was wrong and surely assault?

Blossomtoes · 28/03/2022 21:06

Poor little Will. No excuse @SwanBuster.

Blinky21 · 28/03/2022 21:06

Not sure on the Oscar but he should have been removed immediately and lost the privilege to collect it, I can't believe he was able to stay and and justify violence, and all that narcissistic shit in his speech, vile

5zeds · 28/03/2022 21:06

People often laugh before they snap.

Birdy272 · 28/03/2022 21:07

I've got alopecia myself. Sorry how is GI Jane an insult? Maybe they hadn't seen the film..?

BloodyloveGeorge · 28/03/2022 21:07

I think I’m so bothered about this because I really, really liked WS and it’s so disappointing to see him behave like another dickhead aggro bloke.

Thanks for this info. That does change my mind - yeah it’s somewhat unfortunate that he’s the first one to be caught by these new standards, because he’s not in the same league if awfulness as certain other past recipients, but if he’s fallen afoul of the recently-introduced standards then he should lose his Oscar (only real alternative is to scrap the standards altogether).

SwanBuster · 28/03/2022 21:09

@Blossomtoes

Poor little Will. No excuse *@SwanBuster*.
No excuse - but there is a context behind why he took the action he did. Everyone has a limit they can take. I feel for him - his masculinity has been utterly stripped. And brain has probably been crying out to show Jada that he can measure up to Pac. He can’t - no one can- the man was the ultimate Playa but it’s important to learn to empathise with people. He’s human after all 🤷🏻‍♀️
CurlyhairedAssassin · 28/03/2022 21:10

@SaxendaSummer

Will smith was laughing along with the 'joke' at first...

What changed?

Well I do have my suspicions about why this happened. I think that Chris had agreed with Will and Jada beforehand that he was going to throw in a bit of an insult aimed at Jada and that Will would come on stage and slap him. But in order to make it all look more authentic, they all agreed that he wouldn't tell them what it would be, and he also wouldn't put it in rehearsals either. So my guess is that Will laughed at first but then realised that that must have been the insult he was supposed to react to. Which is why he changed so quickly.

And why Chris Rock was grimacing and still standing with hands behind his back while Will was coming towards him apparently really pissed off. Anyone else would have put their hands outstretched in front of them in a "sorry, dude, didn't mean it, came out the wrong way" type of way. It just isn't natural to stand there with your hands behind your back if someone is heading towards you out of the blue like that.
Also could explain the reason why there is a look that flashes across Will's face after he's slapped him which is a barely suppressed smirk/laugh.

No, it's not shameful at all. There is never any justification for anyone resorting to violence, it's that simple. He is a thug and I don't like that you're excusing him.
Fullmoonagain · 28/03/2022 21:14

His Father was a perpetrator of domestic violence against his mother. Verbal abuse is massively triggering for him, nevermind the disrespect to his wife. The alopecia joke was such a low blow, Chris Rock should be massively apologetic. You don't get to say what the hell you like and have no consequences, massive celebrity or not.
