Is DH BIU- to talk with DSIL about planned baby name

677 replies

fringely · 26/03/2022 10:40

DSIL is 34 weeks pregnant with first DC.
A few weeks ago her and her DP announced the planned baby name.
The actual 'sound' of the name is fine, but it is heavily associated with something which DSIL and her DP were not really aware of. They have been made aware of the association since (as it's pretty common knowledge- not sure how they hadn't heard of it tbh!) but are of the opinion most people won't make the association. DH and I are of the other opinion that most people will definitely make the association, it's not a good association, and genuinely worry that it's not fair to give a baby that name and it's fully possible it could lead to bullying when older.

Whilst DP and strongly agree on the huge issue with the name and agree it's unfair to lumbar a baby with it, I don't think DH should say anything. DH thinks he should have a proper talk with her about his concerns on the name and why he doesn't think it's fair to give to a DN. I think nothing good will come and we should stay quiet.

(So far we have said very little about it. We were notably shocked when told what it was, and clarified 'X' as in X'?? But other than that have nodded and smiled).

OP posts:

There was a long and horrified thread about the name Enola Gay - is it that? We may have convinced the woman not to use it.

Not wanting to derail, but Jeremy Vine made a comment on his TV show recently about a time a group of performers was visiting Japan and they proudly mentioned the legacy of their founder/agency Noel Gay. Needless to say, the Japanese thought they were referencing something else and asked them to please stop mentioning it.

So it's a male name that makes people instantly associate it with unspeakable evil in though, opinion and deed, that is so reviled and disgusting that this connection of pure unalloyed horror at his legacy will surely endure through the ages. Got to be Piers Grin

Seriously, though, it's patently obvious which name on this thread is the one in question, especially given the similar 'clues' from OP. Many people will have enjoyed the TV series and not be at all familiar with the King James Bible (Isaiah 14:12, specifically) - but enough people will instantly think of that for a very long time to come.

I knew a young Elvis, the amount of people who commented on Elvis Presley was unreal. When a name is associated with a famous icon, best to avoid!

PureWisdom · 26/03/2022 14:56

It’s a boy’s name, that’s been mentioned on this thread. It sounds like it a biblical name, and the OP said it was like Lucifer. So, I think it’s Herod.

Sorry for trying to guess, OP.

1forAll74 · 26/03/2022 14:57

If both the parents to be, like the name, than it is their choice.You don't have to go through life, worrying about what other people think of your childs name., as in those who keep associating a name, with someone who you considered has been of a bad type of person in the past.

Will no one name their child Jimmy now, because of the Saville baddie, or even not use Harry now, as in the unpopular Prince.

It isn't anyones business, to tell people, or give them advice, about what the should or shouldn't name their children as.

bellac11 · 26/03/2022 14:57

Are you suggesting its Lucifer then?

I dont know why that would be a problem,, programme or no programme, Diablo is used as a boys name in various countries.

Beautiful3 · 26/03/2022 15:00

I have a feeling the name is Madeline. Its such a pretty name, and hugely connected to Madeline Mc can. In that case I would say to still use it. There's less publicity and rarely spoken about today.

Mistressiggi · 26/03/2022 15:02

ivfconfusion you don't have much experience of teenagers or schools if you think there is any magic parenting style or school choice that removes anyone from being bullied. Even friendly "banter" about your name is your choice if you give the child a name that leads to it.

ddl1 · 26/03/2022 15:05

@CrushedPistachios

I was going to ask if it’s isis, as I know it’s been used as a name pre the naming of the terrorist grouping
I live in Oxford, and because of the river, several companies, etc had 'Isis' in their name. Most have now changed the names; e.g. Isis Innovation is now Oxford Innovation.

True, he's the only one people ever think of. A DJ announced a brand new single by Elvis on the radio the other day, at which everybody will have been 'surprised' to say the least - of course, he meant Elvis Costello, but even he isn't famous enough for people not to instantly think of Mr Presley. Then again, I don't think most people would consider the connotations of Elvis Presley as ^quite as bad as those of Lucifer.

I have a feeling the name is Madeline. Its such a pretty name, and hugely connected to Madeline Mc can. In that case I would say to still use it. There's less publicity and rarely spoken about today.

Considering that it's a boy - and the literal meaning of Madeline is 'little girl' - I'd probably still give it a swerve, regardless.

steff13 · 26/03/2022 15:06

@DaffTheDoggo

If it's Lilith then I think that's an absolutely brilliant name.
I wanted to name my daughter Lilith and my husband said we weren't naming her after a demon.

There was a Magdalena in my family tree, is it like that, Mary Magdalene?

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 26/03/2022 15:09

I think they'd have had to be living under a rock to have not noticed the association with Lucifer.
I'm thinking instead that it might be Herod or Lolita, although I did like the idea of Attila until I realised it hadn't been mentioned until after the OP said the name was on the thread.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 26/03/2022 15:09

Has to be Lolita.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 26/03/2022 15:09

I don't know about other countries and their cultures/connotations with names, but speaking of the UK, I can't imagine calling a child 'Devil' would be very well received by most people. Maybe as a nickname, but not as an actual given name - lots of parents familiarly call their children 'cheeky little sausage' and the like, but you'd still raise your eyebrows at a child whose actual given name, on the BC, was 'Sausage'.

ddl1 · 26/03/2022 15:18

@Yoohoo778611

Is the name more known in the UK with this association or is it from overseas. Such as Fred(West) Peter(Sutcliffe) or Adolf (Hitler) Vladimir (Putin)
Fred and Peter are such common names that I don't think anyone would make the negative associations unless the surnames were very similar.
70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/03/2022 15:19

Idi
Pazuzu
Jimmy
Gary

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/03/2022 15:23

@sweeneytoddsrazor

Jesse I would associate with outlaws tbh. Never heard anyone (even oldies use it to refer to a gay person)
Ya Big Jessie /Jesse

Maybe its a Glasgow thing ?

Sux2buthen · 26/03/2022 15:25

It's Ghengis 100%. I'm sure of itGrin

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 26/03/2022 15:26

Can't be Ghengis, you're the first one who has posted it as a suggestion!

LBFseBrom · 26/03/2022 15:27

@StrychnineInTheSandwiches

Has to be Lolita.
Unusual name for a baby boy, even in this day and age.
user1487194234 · 26/03/2022 15:30

Could they be winding you up

LBFseBrom · 26/03/2022 15:31

Steff13:

I wanted to name my daughter Lilith and my husband said we weren't naming her after a demon.

Quite right too!

There was a Magdalena in my family tree, is it like that, Mary Magdalene?
Yes, lovely name, classic.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 26/03/2022 15:32

@LBFseBrom, yes it would be. But as the OP does not specify the sex of the soon to be born baby so I think Lolita is still a likely contender.

LBFseBrom · 26/03/2022 15:33

@Beautiful3

It's a baby boy!

In any case, Madeline McCann is no devil or tyrant, poor little lass.

Madeline is an ever popular, classic name.

WashedupTroll · 26/03/2022 15:34

the name is NOT Voldemort

Spoilsport, can't you just pretend, would make Mt Saturday Grin

I'm going with Lucifer, as it sounds and looks perfectly reasonable, has been in popular culture recently. Yanu to think this is a dreadful name and that if the child puts a toe out of line people will think worse of him.

Sux2buthen · 26/03/2022 15:35

@ThumbWitchesAbroad

I was going to post it earlier but I saw somebody else already has so I didn't. But nooooow OP had said it's on here I'm certain Grin
