It is not racist. But it is selfish.

Grin fair enough!

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 27/03/2022 18:42

Well I have learned more than I will ever need to know about Joe Dolan, about whom I had never heard before I read this story. He apparently had a hip replacement and auctioned off his original hipbone for 650 euro. This is almost as strange as the original story.

@Tillymintpolo

Sean Bean is the king of Sheffield. !!
^^This. W maybe Jarvis Cocker as heir apparent. This other guy I've never even heard of and I've lived in the city for 30 years.

@ImJustMadAboutSaffron

Yep, I’m speechless at that one.

Grin

Never heard of that, unbelievable. Grin

He had some diehard fans, it was rumoured he was gay, but had to keep it under wraps as it was illegal in Ireland at the time. His female fans went crazy for him. He suffered a terrible beating at one point, which was said to be a homophobic attack.

My dad loved his music, we grew up listening to Joe Dolan and hating him as a result Grin

Sean Bean is the king of Sheffield
yes. And i am the queen.

SenoraMiasma · 28/03/2022 08:25

@themessygarden

Take me and break me and close all your windows and doors.
Shut me off, cut me off, make me an island, I'm yours.
Take me away from the world, take me away from the girls.
Take me and break me and make me an island, I'm yours. 🎶

Class tune

Brefugee · 28/03/2022 09:36

also it's a bit bloody much calling yourself King of Sheffield and not even having a bloody Yorkshire flag.
Grr.
(being clear here, while the memorial isn't to my taste my biggest beef is with the noise element of the jukebox)

SenoraMiasma · 28/03/2022 14:56

It’s a belter🤣

Thelikelylass · 28/03/2022 15:36

By order of the Cheeky Blinders.

Thelikelylass · 28/03/2022 15:44

And now I'm reading something about a dead singer and a hipbone? It's been a surreal day here on good old mumsnet!

Gonnabegrandma · 28/03/2022 15:49

If it doesn’t comply with the regulations it should be dismantled . Personally I think it’s dreadful . I can’t imagine visiting my parents grave and having that next to them . The lights and music are particularly offensive . It’s not racist to want it removed it was never sanctioned . At my parents cemetery you can’t even lay fake flowers or have extra urns ! ( seems daft to me but those are the rules so I comply )

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/03/2022 16:59

the jukebox? if it's on when I'm there I'll probably try to disable it, i find that over the line

I originally thought the "security" they're said to have there was in case the council come to dismantle it - however now I'm wondering if it's for members of the public wanting to do exactly that Wink

Gynaesaur · 28/03/2022 17:11

I've not read the whole thread so apologies if this has been said many times but 400 nieces and nephews? Even if that's from both sides of the family: He has 15 siblings, even if she had the same number of siblings (very unlikely) then each of their siblings would have to have 13 children (with the remainder scattered around) for that to be accurate.

Gynaesaur · 28/03/2022 17:14

Together they had 13 children, six boys and three girls and they are believed to have 400 nieces and nephews

Also, possibly I'm being old fashioned in my line of thinking, but what were the remaining 4 children?

Brefugee · 28/03/2022 17:40

so now his widow is threatening riots if anyone tries to dismantle it. It's bizarre.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 28/03/2022 18:02

Threatening things like that is no better than terrorism. The local council workers are at risk if she is inciting violence. I think the police need to do something.

LadyEloise1 · 28/03/2022 19:07

@Gynaesaur
I love it. Grin👏🏻

The quickness and wit of Mumsnet posters never ceases to amaze me.

The result of poor journalism/sub editing/proof reading. They had 9 DC, the youngest was 13.
Ericaequites · 29/03/2022 03:39

No one should have nine children in this day and age. It’s ridiculous and unaffordable. How many of those children married young and started having children before gaining educational qualifications?

Maybe 9 living children ?

Infant mortality in the traveller community is very high.

lollipoprainbow · 29/03/2022 11:39

How could he possibly have had 400 nieces and nephews ?!!

Grenlei · 29/03/2022 11:53

It's grotesque, gaudy, and I'd imagine quite distressing for anyone visiting the final resting place of a loved one.

After my mum died, my dad used to visit her grave at the cemetery every week and sit in quiet contemplation. Despite being in the middle of London, it was and is a very peaceful place. Having that peace destroyed by a solar powered jukebox would have been hard to bear.

Unfortunately certain sections of society think their 'wants' trample over everyone elses, and this is a perfect example of it.

If this particular family need to find some way to spend all the money they got from scamming pensioners, and commemorating a convicted criminal, maybe they should just buy a plot of land somewhere private and bury him there? Or is this all just about maximum fuss, attention and drama?
