It is not racist. But it is selfish.

But other than this it’s is nothing to do with any of us.

It's got a lot to do with the families of others buried there when they cant visit their loved ones in peace because there's a bloody jukebox blasting out!

And disco lights.

Juke box and colour changing flashing lights.

It is not appropriate.

They have land. If they want a 24/7 disco they should put it there.

Blossomtoes · 25/03/2022 16:53

I think it’s hysterical. Hats off to them, they made me laugh.

I can’t see that there’s anything remotely selfish about it.

GaspingGekko · 25/03/2022 16:55

Totally not the point of the thread, and I don't want to derail, but this little detail in the article stood out for me:

Together they had 13 children, six boys and three girls

What were the other 4? Shock

NancyDrooo · 25/03/2022 16:58

@Momicrone

Do people really spend that much time in a grave yard that a bit of music is going to ruin it? It's not like sitting on a train for 5 hours listening to someone else's music
No, but why should they have to listen to someone’s else’s noise when they visit?

I don’t get to visit my dads grave very often and I only stay 20 minutes or so, but when I do I want to sit quietly, maybe put fresh flowers down etc, not listen to someone blaring out music like it’s a fairground.

I think those that think music is ok either don’t meaningfully visit graves, or they’re as tacky and inappropriate as this memorial is.

ClariceQuiff · 25/03/2022 17:02

The aesthetics or 'tastefulness' of the memorial is irrelevant - a subjective matter.

The only consideration is whether it's compliant with planning regulations in the cemetery.

That’s what happens when you’re a shitrag trying to rush out an anti-Traveller story. Proofreading be damned - Release The Froth!
ChiaraRimini · 25/03/2022 17:05

I'm really disappointed I thought it was going to be a statue of a giant penis

MangyInseam · 25/03/2022 17:06

Well, it's something, that's for sure. It might look a little better in 100 years with a lot of moss.

But if they wanted this, they ought to have put it somewhere else. And the jukebox is really inappropriate.

Tillymintpolo · 25/03/2022 17:10

It’s hideous

GaspingGekko · 25/03/2022 17:12

@Saucery
This is true. I'm sort of ashamed for expecting anything better from the Daily Fail.

I know plenty of women who would buy a headstone like that for an ex!
LadyEloise1 · 25/03/2022 17:16

Like @astoundedgoat I too would be interested in where the money came from.
As he/she posts "...there was that much kicking around at the age of 49 that they had 200k to drop on this.

Poor writing and proofreading. They had nine kids, the youngest of whom is 13.
Deadringer · 25/03/2022 17:26

What's a southern Irish accent? This sort of stuff is not traditional in the traveller community. If it's cultural, it's very much a modern thing. It's awful and should be taken down for breaking planning rules.

Wonder if you'd find it so hysterical if it was next to your loved ones grave. Grow up.

And?
ginghamstarfish · 25/03/2022 17:31

Travellers should have to obey the law and the rules about stuff like this - non-traveller taxpaying Joe Public wouldn't be allowed to get away with this, or move onto land he doesn't own, live there and trash it. Ridiculous to tiptoe around this kind of thing. No doubt this will be deleted.

bozzabollix · 25/03/2022 17:37

There are societies who seek out the stories behind those buried in cemeteries. This reminds me of some brilliant stories relating to certain memorials put up a century or so ago, such as for people who ran circuses with memorials with circus animals in. It gives real variation to a cemetery.

Live and let live, just because some are larger than life during their lives doesn’t mean it should be watered down in death for the pearl clutchers. Memorials should be an expression of personality and taste, and whilst some might hate this it’s what the family want and it reflects him.

Not my taste but I think it’s fab.

Painiscrap · 25/03/2022 17:42

@Burgoo

A duke box can bring the FUN to any funeral! As long as it doesn't overlap onto my grave I don't see what it has to do with me!
The last thing I was looking for, when I buried my dh, was ‘FUN’!

I can say with some certainty that a jukebox (not a duke box, which is a loud based storage service) playing nearby, would have been massively upsetting, had the minister at my dh’s committal been competing to be heard over it! It doesn’t need to be overlapping onto a grave, for it to affect others looking for some peace to grieve for their loved ones!

EmeraldShamrock1 · 25/03/2022 17:42

No such thing as a Southern Ireland accent, there is no such place.
Accents vary in county to county.
I don't think it's a modern thing, granted they're getting bigger.
We visited the graveyards regularly when DC.
Travelling members headstones have always been more extravagant than the average headstone.
Huge marbel rosary beads.
It is cultural as far back as I remember.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 25/03/2022 17:45

From a selfish POV, if that appeared in the graveyard behind my house I would be petitioning the council to get rid of the music and lights ASAP. Would be insanely irritating having that playing constantly and lights all night.

I know a few of the local travellers and they are incredibly devoted to family. This grave would be the sort of place they would gather regularly for generations. I'm just imagining all their enormous family adding songs to the playlist for years to come. Would never be able to sell the house and move.

Personally I don't really agree with burials. There just isn't enough room for everyone and seems like huge waste of time, resources and money. Plus, what happens if you move? Can't bring them with you!

MintJulia · 25/03/2022 17:51

Personally I think it's horribly tacky, but the most offensive thing is the juke box.

It's a grave yard not a fairground. People spend time there burying their loved ones, mourning their loved ones, coming to terms with their grief. They shouldn't have to put up with pop music in the background.

But the council will remove it shortly, and restore order.

TrashyPanda · 25/03/2022 17:52

Imagine going to visit your baby’s grave and have music blaring out
