For telling my neighbour he should stay home

My next door neighbours both tested positive for COVID on the weekend. Today I saw the husband getting in his car to go to work. He works for a medium sized public company with a lot of staff. He said he was told that he’s not legally obliged to isolate and that if he felt well enough he should still go into work. I told him he was morally obliged to isolate because he could infect colleagues who may suffer far worse than he is currently and pass it on to their relatives who may also get very ill or die. Is this what everyone is doing now.? In my industry we are pcr tested twice a week and not allowed on site until the test is negative.

@queensonia

He could have got paid sick leave.. He is a senior manager with full employment benefits so it is not a case of losing money if he stayed home.
It's irrelevant.

If someone has too many absences, they can lose their job. Why would you ring in sick if you're well enough to work?

Sofiegiraffe · 23/03/2022 19:57

Ridiculous and nothing to do with you, OP. I get full sick pay so I would stay off work. But I fully understand that others are not in my fortunate position and can't afford to not work. Hence why I don't judge.

girlmom21 · 23/03/2022 19:58

@MasterBeth but he is following guidance because he did ask the employer for his options. The employer gave them and he is adhering.

AlJalilia · 23/03/2022 19:58

For those saying he should go in because he might lost pay... don’t you realise if he infects other people THEY will have to stay home and potentially not get paid? Or pass it onto their DC who then go on to infect a whole year group, who then have to stay home, along with their parents? Potentially not getting paid?

He is a selfish arse.

derekthe1adyhamster · 23/03/2022 19:58

I tested positive at the weekend, I went to work today, I had 2 clear lateral flow tests 24 hours apart, 5&6 days after symptoms began.
Maybe he's the same?
What'll happen in a fortnights time when we have to pay for tests? I can't imagine paying for a test, I'll just not go to work when I feel unwell

None of those people legally have to isolate either though. They'd end up not at work/school if they were unwell but that's the same as, you know, any other illness.

Sorry but keeping a roof over my childrens heads and food in their belly's is my priority.

Irrelevant. He doesn't need to isolate anymore. Keep your nose out.
melj1213 · 23/03/2022 20:00

do not go to work, school or public places – if you’re unable to work from home, ask your employer about options available to you

So maybe he is unable to WFH, has asked his employer about the options available and they have said "The options are come to work and be paid or stay at home without pay" ... what then?

I work in a major supermarket and our current policy is that if you have covid you will be paid to stay at home with CSP for 10 days, however on April 1st the rules will be changing so that if you have covid byt you are well enough to come to work then you do so - you only get CSP if you are too ill to come to work and you will be expected to follow normal sickness policy - ie anything over 7days needs a sick note from your doctor.

Grotbag81 · 23/03/2022 20:01

My son has tested positive today & school have Said if he's asymptomatic he can in. He has a sore throat but they said as soon as he's got no symptoms he can go in regardless of whether he is still positive or not.

My nephew who we caught it from was told the same from work.

100% this. And so it should be.

How do you know the full ins and outs of your neighbour's employment contract? Confused

Clarabe1 · 23/03/2022 20:02

You would get told to mind your own fucking business if you said anything to me. Maybe he doesn’t get paid he is off sick? It has literally nothing to do with you. It’s between and him and his employer.

ReeseWitherfork · 23/03/2022 20:03

@Sofiegiraffe probably nips round and rifles through paperwork when he's out Wink

Don't you realise most people's priorities are going to be feeding their own families?
queensonia · 23/03/2022 20:03

@Unforgettablefire

I think something should be put in place if vulnerable people could be affected from those going into work with covid. The only time I’d say anything is if I actually worked with the man, I’m ill with covid now and I’d lose my shit if I had to work with someone in future who had it.
Exactly. It’s his choice to go to work but what choice do his colleagues have?

@honeyytoast

When did the MN/public opinion on this shift so much?
This has always been my opinion. I never supported lockdowns.
worriedatthistime · 23/03/2022 20:07

Where do you work that you are pcr tested twice a week
I don't think even the nhs get this

AlJalilia · 23/03/2022 20:08

@DearlyBeloathed he works for a ‘medium sized public company’. He would almost certainly get sick leave.

He’s selfish.

queensonia · 23/03/2022 20:08

Just to be clear I’m not blaming this man personally but the lack of a coherent policy that has put people in this situation. We are on friendly terms so I was expressing my honest opinion when I told him that I thought he should stay home - not issuing an order

Other people aren't my priority any more. My own DS is and my own bills are.
