So many times I've seen people reply to first time posters apparently talking about their teenagers having sick, periods or even sometimes talking about issues with younger kids. Mumsnet make it too easy for people to get their sick jollies on here. I can't change mumsnet but I can say some of you are way too naive about the anonymity on mumsnet and unless you want to contribute to sickos getting their rocks off on your posts, sometimes about your own children start being a bit wiser please!

If you are replying to a thread with sicko potential please take a minute to do a quick search to make sure this is a regular poster or at least someone who has referred to name changing. It's your responsibility to help protect our kids, stop either trusting others like previous posters or mumsmey to do that

@itsneilthebaby

I thought this the other day about the poster talking about their teenage daughter wanting to buy bondage underwear. Surprise surprise it was removed not long after
I saw that! I replied first that it had to be a joke then it disappeared.
2bazookas · 22/03/2022 14:12

There are nutcases and perverts everywhere, but I don't let them dictate how I live my life.

AnnesBrokenSlate · 22/03/2022 14:28

I find it a bit odd that some posters are 'oh I don't mind about perverts wanking over DCs' ironically whilst saying they do mind about having a post number attached to an account Hmm

Some people do mind about MN becoming a go-to place for perverts and sometimes posters looking for genuine advice assume MN has much more robust troll hunting than it does.

The other issue with it is that the more MN is seen as an easy place for perverts to come to get their jollies, the less real advice genuine posters receive. Ask a genuine poster about an issue with changing rooms; teen sex; age gap friendships and their responses are very different from the anime-avatared pervs on Twitter. It dilutes the experience for everyone.

We've been asking for years for number of posts to appear beside users and it's one tiny little step towards making MN better for everyone.

Berthatydfil · 22/03/2022 14:41

Omg totally
I read the teenage daughter asking for sexy underwear post yesterday and it screamed wank fodder and reported it straight away - I’m not sure if there were any replies at all at that point.
I went back to it shortly after and there were loads of - have you had the talk, etc of course I’m cool with my underage dd asking for bondage underwear etc someone even asked what she had asked for.

All were /or seemed to be engaging in genuine good faith with the OP.

I couldn’t believe it.

Luckily mn zapped it just after the poster shared a screen shot of the underwear.

WhyIsEverythingSoHard · 22/03/2022 15:05

@AnnesBrokenSlate you mean the number of posts regardless of the name changes? Or under that specific name change?

I’m not sure it would help.
Lost of people are lurkers for years before posting.

Maybe a star system. You get 1 star for being on MN for 6 months and/or having posted more than 20 posts. Then 2, 3, golden start with increasing length of being a member and/or number of posts.

But as a PP mentioned. Those who really want to will make that effort.
Just like pervs will wait before being allowed to post in the sex subject etc….

Fernandina · 22/03/2022 15:07

@RisingMoon

There is a huge difference between being “worried” and being aware.

Being aware that a topic could be pervy doesn’t mean that you are worried or anxious about the topic!

Being ignorant and naïve is worse than being aware - That was my point.

Being aware doesn’t always equate with being worried Or with being avoidant and hyper vigilant

Agreed. Perhaps the biggest problem is the genuinely gullible. They seem to be the ones who innocently over-share very early on in a thread, before the cynics arrive and cast doubt.

Threads like this one will hopefully open a few more eyes to the issue.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 22/03/2022 15:10

We've been asking for years for number of posts to appear beside users and it's one tiny little step towards making MN better for everyone.

And 'we've ' (whoever they maybe) have been saying it is a bad idea (see also a like button) and as shown already it wouldn't make MN better.

To the pp, I do mind and will post to say as much without troll hunting and report, I report a lot. But I agree that we need to be able to post questions that we can't say elsewhere. I was seen to be a troll but supported by MN when I asked a difficult question.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 22/03/2022 15:17

But then new posters are not believed, many end up here after googling and find that there is a place where people will listen.

I do agree some are very naive and gullible which is why I think a Biscuit can be useful

TheLeadbetterLife · 22/03/2022 15:19

@burnthur5t

The fact that posters can change their username whenever they want is something that I've never seen before on any forum and I've been using forums for over 25 years

There's some forums that don't allow a new user to start a thread until they've made a certain number of comments. Trolls can't be bothered with this and that's why it's in place

MN is a very easy target for trolls, just come on and start posting under multiple usernames all using one email address and you can start threads the second you join

But as I mentioned upthread, MN is the only forum I've ever been on where the community hasn't eventually gone all cliquey and died on its arse.

It's not perfect (what is?) but there's much, much less hierarchical bullshit here than I've encountered elsewhere.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 22/03/2022 15:48

Any kind of "tiering" system is a bad idea. Do we really want a situation where someone needing help with a serious issue has to post 50 comments on whether apples are better than oranges, what they think of this or that baby name, or what they watched on TV last night first?

Or, for that matter, the 500,000 post members being treated like royalty?

Mumdiva99 · 22/03/2022 16:07

But that post @berthatydfil was similar to one Last week where the daughter wanted a dress the mum thought inappropriate and most posters said let her wear it - bondage style is fashionable. So how is someone to know the difference? The mum on that post shared pictures too.....

loach81 · 22/03/2022 16:35

Since when does number of people it’s prove anything?

That you’ve managed to fall just beneath the benchmark for a ban?
That’s you’re obsessed with mumsnet, spend most of your life on it and that somehow makes you more of a solid source of advice and comment?

FantasticFebruary · 22/03/2022 18:46

@Mickarooni

It’s the way the trolls ask that’s sick, not those who are genuinely seeking support

You're deluded if you think you can tell the difference.

AnnesBrokenSlate · 22/03/2022 19:19

A lot of deliberate disingenuousness. No-one said you needed x number of posts to be genuine. The fact is people who have been here for a while can spot the trolls. What helps to fool newer members is when a troll throws in 'I've been here for years - pom bears - or some other reference that has been plastered all over the newspapers and social media;.
You automatically take away that claim to legitimacy if there is way for other posters to see when you joined or how many posts you've made.
And 'we' are those of us who have been here for years. Because perverts and MRAs aren't new to MN. But the problem is getting worse, the moderation isn't coping as well and there's now the other types of trolls to add to it.
The more trolls there are, the more they continue unchallenged and see MN as an easy target, the quicker MN loses the reason why posters actually come here. It's not to get 'advice' from MRAs. It's not to read political opinion from SPADs pretending they're neutral and it's not to get caught up in some culture war manufactured by the other type of trolls.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 22/03/2022 19:37

I'm a 'we' that has been here for years (and I do agree that you become aware of some trolls due to repeated exposure) but if you think adding a post count will deter trolls then you are frankly delusional. The greatest asset is the members of MN who routinely report.

NippyWoowoo · 22/03/2022 21:05

@SobranieCocktail

Surely a troll/perve could just say they've name changed?
Yes they can but a lot done and still loads of posters buy into it, so they don't have to work hard
NippyWoowoo · 22/03/2022 21:32

some people have haircut fetishes and get off on reading about them.

Just when you think you've heard it all 💇🏽‍♀️

QuebecBagnet · 22/03/2022 21:36

@ParanoidGynodroid

It's not, name changing would be pointless if it had that much detail.

Its not identifying detail though... there must be thousands of members who joined in, say, 2016.

Possibly not so many who joined in 2001!
implantreplace · 23/03/2022 13:51

Making it much more onerous to name change would be a start

nitsandwormsdodger · 23/03/2022 14:15

I’ve just invested two long replies to the dam teacher thread completely shocked it was a troll,

What can you do ? Just post your stuff and reply in good faith and hope for the best ? No ?
Side thought
I’m in a local forum where someone has hysterically WARNED every to be AWARE about an armed robbery at the post office yesterday , whilst a closed post office reminder is a helpful notice if I was on my way there , I did point out how me being WARNED and AWARE were in no way going to help prevent or solve the crime/ future crimes all it was was hysterical local info/gossip

If you read the first page you'd have seen it was a troll
WashedupTroll · 23/03/2022 14:20

It would ruin MN
RachelGreeneGreep · 23/03/2022 14:32

Absolutely. And even after it was pointed out numerous times, including by MN saying that they were going to take the thread down, posters still kept posting as though it was real.

CassandrasCastle · 23/03/2022 14:53

How are haircuts wank material??

RisingMoon · 23/03/2022 15:12

@CassandrasCastle

How are haircuts wank material??
Well, plimsolls, ill-fitting school uniforms, urinary incontinence, defecation, plasters, and other things that I don’t dare list are apparently garnered here by trolls for wank fodder.

I think the haircut troll was about children’s hair. So Apparently that’s a fetish. 🤮
