Ridiculously high heels - Apprentice Final Four

Just watching this week's episode.
Really pleased to see 4 women in the final, but why the heels?
Even Karen is wearing them.
They are bad for your feet, balance and just ridiculous.
My Mum's feet were destroyed by heels in the 60s, and I prioritise walking over heels.

@EveryCloudIsGrey

I've never worn heels, I think they are ugly and dated. Most women look odd when they walk in them. I can see they make your legs look longer and slimmer but I don't care.

There are so many lovely style shoes about these days that are also comfortable that I think people are weird if they totter about on high heels.

Each to their own, I think they look great. I can't wear heels to work now because of my job but when I was office based I did, as did most of my colleagues. I guess we're a bunch of old fashioned weirdos. Oh well.
BringMeTea · 21/03/2022 09:03

Yes heels are often a ridiculous look. I also associate it with lower intelligence. No need for any heel wearers to come and tell me about how clever they are. Just my opinion.

Iamthewombat · 21/03/2022 09:14

You just keep telling yourself whatever makes you feel better.

Unfortunately, this says an awful lot about your level of intelligence.

I wore a gorgeous pair of heels to my PhD viva as I feel good in them. Thankfully my examiners were intelligent enough not to judge me on my appearance but on the quality of my work.

I ran an event on IWD which touched on appearance which generated some really interesting discussions. I have been judged by a number of people who, for some reason, can't understand that I can have platinum blonde hair, wear make up, heels etc AND work as a university academic. When people make ridiculous comments like this it just tells me that they aren't very clever.

I refuse to change how I look and dress because other people are too stupid to understand that it isn't a reflection on my ability.

I watched the Apprentice interview show last night.

I was delighted to note that both Linda Plant and Claudine Collins, two high achieving women by any objective standard, wore make up, beautiful clothes and heels. Claudine’s shoes were gold. I bet she doesn’t give a stuff about bitter comments like those on this thread

Sir Alan and Claude should do likewise if it's such a delight.

Iamthewombat · 21/03/2022 16:52

I wouldn’t mind if they did. I very much doubt that they’d attract the same ire as the women, though.

hangrylady · 21/03/2022 16:53

@Benes I think some of the anti heels comments stem from pure jealousy. It's easier for some women to think that looking glamorous means that a woman is all looks and no brains or personality. In reality you can have both, or one or the other or neither.

What's to stop any woman wearing heels if she wants to?
It doesn't take any great skill to wear heels- what's to be jealous of?

No skill? Have you ever ran for a bus in 6 inch heels?Grin
speakout · 21/03/2022 21:06

Wearing heels is hardy an olympic sport.
I know it takes practice, but is well within the capability of an average woman motivated to wear such footwear.

It really doesn't take a special kind of woman to be able to wear heels- you have no super powers.

Whats glamorous about heels and why would you be "jealous" of someone wearing them?

Glamour is about the whole look, not a pair of high heels. There are great shoes around now which look perfectly glamorous without the traditional, old fashioned high heel look. Even wedges are better than those stiletto type things. Not all heels look glamorous - many of them look cheap, overdone and ridiculous.

Here we go As soon as a woman dislikes something another woman does it’s jealousy, women can’t actually dislike or not agree with something. Strangely people don’t accuse men of jealousy so often

To be fair I doubt there's a thread of blokes writing their thoughts about the men's suits and footwear- and they tend to be less judgemental towards other men and indeed what women are wearing than other women. I mean some of the outpouring or ridiculousness on this thread is astonishing.

SucculentChalice · 21/03/2022 21:43

I'm just puzzled as to how anyone can be jealous of high heels. Considering how most of us can simply go to a shop and buy them, or order them online. And then put them on. But choose not to. Theres no great talent in walking in them either, but if people really convince themselves they are special in some way by being able to do all that, then I suppose it takes all sorts!

Oh for God's sake chill out I was joking. I rarely wear heels myself any more. My comment about jealousy was not really specific to heels, more appearance in general. Some women are jealous of other women who look glamorous, whether that be heels, make up, clothes etc. I would like add I live in jeans and trainers so I don't count myself as glamorous it's just an observation.
hangrylady · 21/03/2022 21:54

"Strangely people don’t accuse men of jealousy so often".
Probably because men don't go online and try and belittle other men for being outdated, weird looking like sex workers and sad. Not my words, the words of other posters on this thread. Funny how you've chosen to pick on my comment Hmm

abc4321 · 21/03/2022 21:54

The heels are vertiginous. And there's a few trout pouts too.

I can honestly say that the women that I worked with in investment banking dresser nothing like this (not that many women were stupid enough to work in investment banking). Possibly because the hours were so ridiculous that you'd be getting even less sleep if you spent half an hour perfecting your appearance.

I can't say many other women in professional services wear skin-tight dresses and towering heels either. Each to their own, it's their prerogative to dress how they like. Personally I don't want to spend that much time on my appearance and feel squeezed into a constricting outfit. If they do, fair play to them. I might judge them for their woeful business plans though.....

I don't the workplace is the right place for glamour. Its a place to look smart and fit in, but looking glamorous in my profession wouldn't go down too well, along with too much make up and tight clingy clothes. I certainly wouldn't feel jealous of someone who thought they had to look glamorous at work. I'd just assume they worked in sales!

Iamthewombat · 21/03/2022 22:51

I don't (sic) the workplace is the right place for glamour. Its a place to look smart and fit in, but looking glamorous in my profession wouldn't go down too well, along with too much make up and tight clingy clothes.

Oh, do you work on the bins?

Joking. I am curious about why looking glamorous and not fitting in with your rules on how everyone should dress at work ‘wouldn’t go down too well’ though. With whom would it not go down well? And why? How would the ‘not going down too well’ manifest itself? Let me guess. Spiteful, envious PA behaviour, courtesy of you. Christ.

Iamthewombat · 21/03/2022 22:58

I wonder whether anyone will have the balls to admit that they don’t like other women looking more attractive than them, and that’s the reason for the bizarre anger at anyone wearing shoes with heels, or fitted clothes, or make up.

Eh? I work in the higher courts. Theres a dress code. It wouldn't go down well with the judges.

To be honest, I don't have time to look. I've been the target of that sort of attitude in the past though, so I do know what you mean. But not everyone is the same.

What bizarre anger? I'm not angry with the women wearing them, I'm sad for these particular individuals that they've been made to present this image of successful woman that seems to be so dependent on what they wear and how they look, particularly given that it's an image that just doesn't accord with reality. You have to wonder whether they'd even allow someone like Ruth Badger on the programme nowadays.
