Ridiculously high heels - Apprentice Final Four

427 replies

axolotlfloof · 18/03/2022 22:28

Just watching this week's episode.
Really pleased to see 4 women in the final, but why the heels?
Even Karen is wearing them.
They are bad for your feet, balance and just ridiculous.
My Mum's feet were destroyed by heels in the 60s, and I prioritise walking over heels.
Aibu?

@Jaffapaffa

I've been told today that I have to teach my class (Y8) that heels are part of a work wardrobe for women, and that if you want to succeed, it's essential to wear them.

I've objected several times, but have been told that it's not optional.

I'm really not comfortable with this at all.

But yes, apparently there's still a school of thought that says women must wear heels to be successful - hence their appearance in The Apprentice, I suppose.

Sorry I just don't believe this
knowinglesseveryday · 19/03/2022 11:22

I see respected women newsreaders also wear very high heels when office based.

We should all channel Naga Munchetty, who wears some lovely shoes (yes, with heels!) on BBC Breakfast. When berated for her choice of footwear and asked why she wore heels, her response was, “because I like them”.
MrsLargeEmbodied · 19/03/2022 11:30

thursdays newsnight the woman newsreader gorgeous stripey trainers to match her t shirt

Calandor · 19/03/2022 11:31

I always thought it was unfair in the challenges where there's lots of running from place to place that the men got to do it in shoes while the women sprinted on stilts.

It's old fashioners

Lol what?

Nobody in any office I work in has worn high heels bar the occasional boot.

@pompei8309

I love heels, I walked in them all throughout my pregnancy. Not everyone is a size 8 and 6ft tall so for us shorties and chubby gives us better posture and height.It does give you a bit of presence comparing with wearing frumpy flats . I don’t like the look of “ unkept” so a shower and brushing your hair doesn’t do it for about 99% of us , no matter how good you think your complexion is
It doesn't give you better posture, it gives you a curvature in the lower spine, and can cause long term damage to your back.

I was referred to a back specialist when I was in my mid-20s, so 1980-ish. I was given a very stern lecture by my consultant when I walked in to his office in 3" heels. Apart from the occasional hour or two at a party, I haven't worn a heel over about 1.5" since, despite being told I ought to by my boss when I was still working as an estate agent.

and yet she was criticized here for wearing brogues

hangrylady · 19/03/2022 11:34

So women should be able to wear what they want, unless it something you don't approve of right?

Peasock · 19/03/2022 11:34
@Peasock she laughs at the ridiculous timescale due to the fact that they look so polished and that it would take them, in her opinion, far longer to get ready than the time stated... you're very invested in my Daughters sense of humour aren't you?
Oh no I don't give a fuck about your DD or her sense of humour, why would I? Just find it really weird someone, anyone would laugh at that.

Peasock · 19/03/2022 11:35

Yes pretty much seems to be the flavour. Not sure how being controlled by one group is better than years of adhering to societal norms, same shit different group.
MrsLargeEmbodied · 19/03/2022 11:40

@peasock

you find it weird that someone would laugh at the supposed scene of them having 20 minutes to get ready?

we all know surely it takes more than 20 minutes to get as ready as these contestants seem to - it is a lie - are you taking it seriously?

Unpleasant treatment of women yet again, sends a clear message what you're meant to look like (sexualised female) to be 'allowed' your place in a boardroom. Sad.

Yes I find it odd someone who is nearly 30 would roar with laughter at it Confused. I don't tend to take entertainment programmes too seriously on the whole, no. Also the call says the cars will arrive in x time which probably isn't a lie, it doesn't say when they're going to leave. I dont see the point of them doing that bit and think they should just start showing it when they're being given the task, but for whatever reason they do.

Piggy666 · 19/03/2022 11:44

@Peasock well you obviously DO 'give a fuck' because you're responding 🤣

Peasock · 19/03/2022 11:44

Because people keep mentioning it!

I laugh long and hard that they are woken up in the pitch dark and emerge "20 minutes later" into bright sunshine.

VerityPJohnson · 19/03/2022 11:47

So these are basically costumes in an entertainment show, the way the Love Islanders wear bikinis. It jars a bit because it seems to imply this is what women should wear but effectively they are just playing dress up for the TV. Most people see that it’s quite outdated now, although plenty of people wear outdated stuff if that’s right for them.

Piggy666 · 19/03/2022 11:48

@Peasock

She laughs! Anyone would think it's the crime of the century We all have stuff that tickles us, she finds it funny Do people question you when you laugh at something?
tkwal · 19/03/2022 11:48

Smart shoes yes, heels, depends what the individual is comfortable with.
I've noticed on BBC breakfast that the female presenters always wear the most beautiful shoes but, if they need to go outside for an interview or something they change to flats or trainers.
Do your employers specify what height the heels are supposed to be ? It's pretty hard to buy shoes without any heel at all. Do they have to be stilettos or can they be block heels /wedges ?.Are boys/men allowed to wear boots with heels ? All sorts of arguments here but it seems a very dated approach, not least because of anti discrimination laws

LakieLady · 19/03/2022 11:50

@speakout

In the real world, outside the Mumsnet bubble, heels are everywhere.

I rarely see women wearing heels.

Me neither. But then the pavements in my town are in such a state that wearing heels here is probably a fast track to A&E.

None of my friends wear them, even friends who are much younger than me, eg 20s/30s. Only one of my 3 adult nieces wears them, and she only wears them on nights out, when she only has to walk from where she's parked to wherever she's going. She's only 5', and wears them to make herself taller.

Iamthewombat · 19/03/2022 11:51

Not sure how being controlled by one group is better than years of adhering to societal norms, same shit different group.

Yes, I thought the same. I don’t give much for the chances of a young woman who enjoys wearing dresses and heels if she turned up for an interview with some of the posters on this thread!

SmugglersHaunt · 19/03/2022 11:53

I find the regulation bodycon dresses in jewel colours more puzzling.

dayswithaY · 19/03/2022 11:56

Me too. Ruth Badger never felt the need to wear an emerald green bodycon dress with black spike heels and bouncy blow dry.

This programme just became Love Island with clothes on. The candidates aren't serious business people either. One runs a cafe, one sells second hand clothes, one flogs PJs imported from China. I actually think Britney's protein drink was the best idea.
