Ridiculously high heels - Apprentice Final Four

427 replies

axolotlfloof · 18/03/2022 22:28

Just watching this week's episode.
Really pleased to see 4 women in the final, but why the heels?
Even Karen is wearing them.
They are bad for your feet, balance and just ridiculous.
My Mum's feet were destroyed by heels in the 60s, and I prioritise walking over heels.
Aibu?

Ah, now I understand about the coats and scarves - thanks!

No-one here who likes wearing heels should feel attacked or belittled. I think most of us are just pointing out that the women on Apprentice can't ALL enjoy wearing high stilettos, and it's not even a current trend, so they must be MADE to wear them, which is very different.

Itsbackagain · 19/03/2022 12:04

YABU not for anyone to judge - they wear what they want to surely?

topcat2014 · 19/03/2022 12:07

I'm CFO of a school, joined recently. Had to buy a suit after not wearing one in industry for 10 years.

Only people wearing suits these days are sales teams.

You don't rule the world, people are allowed to have contrary opinions, believe it or not!
birthdaywanker · 19/03/2022 12:35

Their tight dresses and high heels look really dated, I think - I don’t know any women who dress like this now, especially in high powered professional roles.

LookItsMeAgain · 19/03/2022 12:36

@Beachbreak2411

Their heels were ridiculous! Almost as ridiculous as their business plans!!
Yes. Agree with this statement!

i think the pandemic was the death of heels

Gosh all she said was she was surprised by such high heels and didn’t think they were great for feet.

Seema1234 · 19/03/2022 13:11

I stopped watching The Apprentice ages ago as I was just the same old thing. I caught a few minutes of the other day and thought I'd gone back to the 80s. The outdated brightly coloured bodycon dresses, heels, big hair and caked on make up look ridiculous. I thought we were over thinking women in business as a novelty act and that women need to look like a blow up doll.

moonbedazzled · 19/03/2022 13:19

@WTF475878237NC

Moonbedazzled Do you wear them at home alone instead of slippers? If not then perhaps you like something about what you think they project about you to others and this gives you a feeling you like in return.
What a bizarre comment. Of course I don't wear heels around the house! 😂 Nor do I wear flat boots, trainers, walking boots, wellies or sandals round the hous. I very rarely wear slippers either unless my feet are cold watching telly and I only wear boot slippers. (Don't know the technical term.) I mean I don't wear heels when I'm walking the dog, or at the gym or doing the gardening.

I pick my clothes because I like them on me but I also like other people to think I look nice? Is that just me? Don't other people like to look nice? I like how my legs look in heels, I like how my clothes look when I'm wearing heels, I like how I walk in heels, I even like the sound of my heels on the flooring. I don't think they project anything about me. They just look nice. I have friends who never wear heels. I don't think less or more of them. It's their style and choice and I'd never be rude about them because their choice is different from mine.

Heels will never die. All fashion is cyclical. I remember when ballet flats were all the rage because Diana wore them. But heels never went away and after she left Charles, she too started to wear them. I went to York for the day this week and went into several shoe shops. There were heels everywhere.
Badbaddog · 19/03/2022 13:31

I don’t think they get free choice as to what they wear. I blame the production team and the BBC for the styling, weird regimentalisation of camera angles and all-round weakness of this season’s show. Disappointing. Tim is yummy though 😊

Mosschopz · 19/03/2022 13:31

The Apprentice is a pantomime, it neither reflects business or the image of those who work in professional careers.

NeverChange · 19/03/2022 13:34

I hate when women start tearing down other women, especially over their fashion sense or style. It's just needless and nasty.

I wear heels to work mostly and typically wear dresses. I'm 5foot so dresses are much handier than trousers as even the petite sizes have to be taken up.

I like wearing heels and I wear them for me and don't care what anyone else thinks. I have zero problems with my feet.

Some women chose botox, fillers, lip plumbers,false eyelashes. I don't but I don't attack their choices.

Others prefer to dress casually and favour flats. Not my presence but can respect theirs.

What do some people think it's acceptable to judge women on their chosen attire and preferences? What positives does it actually achieve? It's just nasty and unnecessary.

Malibuismysecrethome · 19/03/2022 13:37

I completely agree and hate the tight dress/high heels combo with a passion, unless you are auditioning for a career as an escort.
Ditto the wearing formal business suits for sixth form boys. It’s as though the mega successful internet entrepreneurs who never wear suits don’t
exist.

Thoosa · 19/03/2022 13:49

I think the suspicion is that it isn’t their personal style isn’t it? That it’s imposed or at least strongly encouraged by wardrobe department as part of the show’s “look”?

Hoppinggreen · 19/03/2022 13:51

I don’t think anyone is criticising what women CHOOSE to wear, it’s who is doing the choosing that is the issue and the fact that most of these women are indentkit suggests that either they are being told what to wear OR they feel that in order to be a success they have to look a certain way.
Neither of which are great

Catlitterqueen · 19/03/2022 14:03

@LiberteEgaliteBeyonce

I made exactly the same comment. It is quite clear that one of the candidates is struggling to walk properly in them too! Like others have said, the amount of make up, false lashes, super white teeth etc reinforces a certain idea of what successful people should look like. It's narrow minded and dated.
I wore heels and a suit for an office job in the 1980’s. At the time it was expected though I bent the rules with longer skirts and flat boots. I just think it all seems a bit old fashioned?
FinallyHere · 19/03/2022 14:10

@Jaffapaffa I am sorry to hear what nonsense you are being told to pass on.

I have a reasonably senior role in technology/media sector. I would be happy to speak at your school about my success and how it has been absolutely nothing to do with what I wear. There is a very sharp divide between 'in front of camera ' and behind camera roles. Even the presenters all keep a jacket and tie in the office incase they need to present to camera.

If you are within travelling distance of west London, you might be interested in taking them behind the scenes to see how it all works https://www.skyacademystudios.com

Papayamya · 19/03/2022 14:11

They buy their own clothes for the show, the guidelines are the usual ones for TV such as no hectic patterns or brands because they look terrible on camera- several previous contestants have confirmed this not sure why they'd bother lying. Steph did an insta live yesterday and they mentioned the clothes, saying it isn't what they'd usually wear but you're only on TV once; i wonder how many who reasonably wear casual clothes to work would be as happy to wear them on a show like this. Interestingly it said they only have 3 outfits for the boardroom which they rotate, maybe out of the clothes they bring with them they choose which compliment what others are wearing- there's definitely bigger differences in what they wear during tasks (including flats). Their social media's sees them wearing heels for nights out often. If anyone is taking advice or guidance from the apprentice in succeeding in business then that's quite worrying though!

Papayamya · 19/03/2022 14:15

@Jaffapaffa

I've been told today that I have to teach my class (Y8) that heels are part of a work wardrobe for women, and that if you want to succeed, it's essential to wear them.

I've objected several times, but have been told that it's not optional.

I'm really not comfortable with this at all.

But yes, apparently there's still a school of thought that says women must wear heels to be successful - hence their appearance in The Apprentice, I suppose.

This seems almost unbelievable, and if its not then surely use it as a discussion point ie what do you all think of this concept- which I expect is the intention and you've misunderstood.
BiddyPop · 19/03/2022 14:20

I'm in a senior management position in a professional environment. Yes I occasionally wear heels but relatively low ones, and most of the time I actually wear flats. And have done for over 10 years.

(Also, I wear a mix of occasional skirt but a fair few dresses and a LOT of trousers - so yes I have to be professionally dressed but it's not all skirts and heels).

Iamthewombat · 19/03/2022 14:50

Hear this, women who choose to wear fitted dresses and heels. This poster wants you to know that she thinks that you look like a prostitute.

Or, of course, she could be resentful of women who wear attractive, sexy clothes, look better than she does, and lead her to feel bad about her own appearance, but we’ll never know, will we? She and others like her will never admit to the latter.

speakout · 19/03/2022 14:53

Sorry- but women who don't choose to dress this way have been called "frumpy" on this thread.
