I really love the smell of petrol. My DH thinks I'm mad (because poisonous etc). I think tar smells nice too. Am I the only one?
Share your unusual smell choices with me....

The smell of freshly mown grass makes me think of Spring and home.
Silage reminds me of Christmas when I went home from Uni.
Also quite like the smell of my own farts, the more pungent the better.

Frauhubert · 17/03/2022 21:31

When it’s hot in the summer and rain falls on tarmac- that dust evaporating off the ground mmmm

LoveMyPiano · 17/03/2022 21:31

Another one for hoof oil - especially one that comes in a red cylindrical can.
The saddle soap that is a glycerin rectangle in a cadborad box.....Lasts forever.
Cooked linseed (but not linseed oil)
Horse, generally - but that soft bit at the side above the mouth and under their nostrils - and so SOFT!

Nivea - did someone else post this?
BUT BUT, different products smell different - skincare vs body lotions etc. I went on a trip far far away and had Nivea with me, I think just the basic blue bottle with the white top. I have tried every.single. one, and can't seem to get that fragrance again.....
I know they have an actual fragrance line, but don't want to risk the disappointment. (The eye make up remover comes closest....)

I liked the exhaust fumes when I was little. The proper hardcore 70's leaded stuff.

Andoffwego · 17/03/2022 21:32

Creosote. I used to love that smell so much. To me it is the smell of summer as everyone used to creosote their fences when the weather was warm and dry. I used to take big deep breaths whenever I passed a recently treated fence because I loved the smell so much. I don’t think it’s allowed to be sold in the U.K. and I think it’s been about 20 years since you could get it. I would love to smell it again although suspect it’s massively bad for you hence it being withdrawn.

Pine fresh floor cleaner like you used to get in schools.

Usernamepleasework · 17/03/2022 21:38

Dettol, TCP, Witch hazel, Band new car and a sauna not sure that one has been mentioned yet Smile

Toddlerteaplease · 17/03/2022 21:40

I love petrol, creosote and washing powder.

MagicDragonsPuff · 17/03/2022 21:42

I love the smell of tar.. I had whooping cough when I was little and my mum got hot tar from a road worker (back in the 70s) and it helped clear my chest.. maybe it’s a throw back to then

scoobydoo1971 · 17/03/2022 21:44

Craving the smell of petrol, amongst other smells, is a sign of anaemia. When my iron was low, I used to crave the smell of tar, smelling salts and charcoal.

ManateeFair · 17/03/2022 21:44

Creosote, new tires, Swarfega, cheap flip-flops, plastic umbrellas, Dettol.

Ditto I have memories of my mother retrieving me from the back end of a coach circa 1972 😵‍💫

TheRosesAreInBloom · 17/03/2022 21:49

Brochures and some magazines

Thatswhyimacat · 17/03/2022 21:57

My weird thing is what I don't like the smell of - warm pastries. If I smell baking croissants or something it actually makes me want to be sick.

Thatswhyimacat · 17/03/2022 21:59

Oh and I just remembered, I LOVE the smell of vinegar!

Fairislefandango · 17/03/2022 22:03

Petrol is a revolting smell imo.

tkwal · 17/03/2022 22:04

Horses, diesel, fresh cut grass, freesias, outside in the summer after a light rainshower

SoupDragon · 17/03/2022 22:05

Wood - fresh sawdust or shavings. It takes me right back to my dad's workshop.

Leather and petrol

Mummatron3000 · 17/03/2022 22:13

Love the smell of glossy printed magazines / catalogues (like Argos!)
Really don’t like the smell of petrol though, I associate it with being travel sick as a child

DancingBarefootOnIce · 17/03/2022 22:14

I now like cigarette smoke as I rarely encounter it and it reminds me of the past and my grandparents

Bellagio40 · 17/03/2022 22:18

I love the smell of petrol but my favourite is the smell of matches after they’ve been blown out

RicherThanYew · 17/03/2022 22:19

Old, musty, wood pannelled houses Envy
Dusty summer houses or conservatories.
Forest pine, genuine not some guff in a can. Chamomile, fresh brewed coffee and the very best is new carpets.
