On the look out for great new habits. What are yours? Here are a few of mine to start us off:

  • floss and use interdental in the shower
  • take one old item out of the fridge each time I open it
  • get dressed as soon as I get out of bed to avoid lounging in dressing gown

what are your great habits that help your life run smoothly? I'm in need of inspiration! thanks :)

katyrebecca84 I'm far from perfect and beat myself up all the time about not doing more or being good enough 😬

I have a hugely demanding full time job and the only way I survive is relentless organization!

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 17/03/2022 16:41

Placemarking for ideas!

I have alarms set on my phone to remind me to drink water, do short mindfulness practices, take vitamins etc. I also have a wipeable magnetic planner on my fridge where I can note daily activities, appointments, shopping lists etc. I have my exercise bike in the living room and I tell myself I can only watch TV if I’m on the bike…this one needs working on, admittedly!

whirlyhead · 17/03/2022 16:44

20 minutes of meditation every morning, 10 minutes of positive affirmations, plus writing in a gratitude journal every night. I've been doing these for several years now, and after growing up with the world's most negative mother and ending up with a not brilliant mindset myself, I find it's been brilliant at helping me change my mindset to a more positive one and helps me cope with whatever daily crap the world throws at me.

Always check who I’m sending text/email etc to before hitting send!

@Northernlass99

If you have worn make up during the day, you get home from work or wherever and are not going out again, cleanse your face THEN (or at least soon after). That way it doesn't wait until bed time when you are tired can't be bothered.

I also drink a large glass of water after I have cleaned my teeth first thing in the morning. I like the suggestion of flossing in the shower.

I love this first one. That's a really good idea, I'm borrowing it!

Save every month.
Overpay mortgage.
Ensure all important papers are filed in home filing cabinet - and say to find

becca3210 · 17/03/2022 17:33

Just bought some nuts and seeds and mixed them up in a jar for afternoon energy dips. Tend to reach for chocolate.

melisma · 17/03/2022 17:39

Anytime I move from upstairs to downstairs or vice versa, I try to never go empty handed. There is ALWAYS something (clean/dirty laundry, kids reading books, glasses, mugs etc) to be transported one way or the other! It really works for us and avoids the build up of stuff on the stairs/on the landing.

DickeryDock · 17/03/2022 17:43

I always put music on when I’m doing a job I hate like packing away washing or washing up. I usually put early 2000s R&B on so I can have waves of memories of younger carefree years to cheer me up.

linerforlife · 17/03/2022 17:45

Always clean up downstairs before bed, and lay out coffee and cups for next morning. Take make up off before bed, and put a super hydrating cream on to wake up with plump skin. Sleep with a drink next to the bed. Hang my body brush on the shower knob so when I go to turn the shower on in the morning I have to take the brush off first - I then dry body brush while the shower warms up and leave the brush on the bath mat while I shower. Can't step out of the shower without stepping on it... which reminds me to put it back on the shower knob!

SheldonandAmy · 17/03/2022 17:48

Put moisturiser on my hands when I get into bed.
Unload dishwasher/wipe sides whilst the kettle boils.
If I don't want to do a job I set a timer for 5 minutes and only have to do it for that long (normally I'll finish it anyway once started).

PrincessPaws · 17/03/2022 17:49

As soon as I get a new device, a sandwich bag gets labelled and all cables/other bits (eg for ring doorbell, the charger the screwdriver, spare screws, spare face plate) get put in the bag and into the box it goes. I never have to hunt for any bits that only get used once in a blue moon

catfunk · 17/03/2022 17:55

-Prep lunches for the week on a Sunday. This week was chicken, chickpea and spinach stew to microwave.

  • Meal planning & online grocery shopping - saves time and money.
  • Pint of water with a vitamin BerroccA thing whilst waiting for coffee machine to warm up

Oh and I also listen to podcasts on my AirPods whilst doing housework. I do a lot more housework since buying AirPods ....

cloverlover · 17/03/2022 18:25

Great ideas thanks everyone! Lots of inspiring habits I will try to implement 😊😊😊

To those wondering about the flossing in the shower, I’m usually very energy conscious but my showers are my reset time and an incentive to do the flossing in an otherwise freezing bathroom when I can’t bring myself to outside of it. It only takes a minute and for some reason especially during winter I am much more inclined to miss it when I don’t do it in shower as otherwise too bloody cold in my house…. And I’ve associated the actions together now. Which works well for me.

3 litres of water a day.
Never skip a workout.
Clean and tidy as you go.

Libertaire · 17/03/2022 18:31

The list of my virtuous habits is a short one, but I do walk 5-6km every weekday lunchtime.

VampireMoney · 17/03/2022 18:47

Alway tidy as you go along when making a meal, and get as much of the washing up out of the way before it's served.

Alway give the living room a quick tidy before bed.

Take a bottle of water to bed so you can hydrate in the morning before you start doing anything else.

Don't worry about cooking a full on meal from scratch every day. Sometimes tuna/beans on a jacket spud is good enough.

IglesiasPiggl · 17/03/2022 18:54

Whenever I am given a date, it goes straight on to calendar. I always have my calendar ready when reading emails from school as well. Reply to invitations straight away.

OohRahhMaki123 · 17/03/2022 19:00

I used to be terrible for keeping hold of old paperwork. I struggled to throw it away as I felt it "could be useful one day".

I downloaded an app called notion, (there are a bunch of similar ones - anything that you can create folders etc).

When I now get a bill, bank statement, insurance cert, council tax bill - whatever - I snap a photo and label it in the app.

It goes straight in the shredding box and then recycle.

I've gone down from a shelf of lever arch files to just the one for the super important bits! (Plus I have no more piles of random post on the hall table, my desk, stuffed in drawers...)

Yes! I use the 15 minute rule in my house.

For me I don't have the initial "activation energy" to start a task. I think I must be the worlds best procrastinator.

But by bargaining with myself that it's only 15 minutes I get over the initial speedbump and can get cracking. And, like you say, once you've started you often carry on as you get into it.

DustyMaiden · 17/03/2022 19:20

Clean the fridge when cooking dinner on Wednesday- shop on Thursday.

Craftylittlething · 17/03/2022 19:26

Some of these are great, mine is wiped down the bathroom while waiting on bath to run or the shower to heat up.
We’ve got a cordless hoover and I have a quick scoot round with that before heading to work in the morning. Both of these things have been game changers for me, the house always feels clean and fresh.
Also when I’m working from home I light a candle, it just makes it feel nicer.

sophienelisse · 17/03/2022 19:29

@RandomBasic

Last one. I listen to audio books when doing housework or something boring. I save those books for the chores, so I only get to find out what happened next if I put away the laundry.
I do this too. I have audiobooks I can only listen to if I am out walking. It gets me out walking more.

Also I do bits in between waiting for the kettle/microwave.
