On the look out for great new habits. What are yours? Here are a few of mine to start us off:

  • floss and use interdental in the shower
  • take one old item out of the fridge each time I open it
  • get dressed as soon as I get out of bed to avoid lounging in dressing gown

what are your great habits that help your life run smoothly? I'm in need of inspiration! thanks :)

I put stuff away, not down.
Household paperwork is filed/shredded/dealt with the day it arrives in the post.
I go through the fridge on Tuesday evening and put any old food in the recycling (bins are collected Wednesday).

RAOK · 17/03/2022 12:21

I like the idea of flossing in the shower. I’m going to try that.

Katya213 · 17/03/2022 12:26

Always find a quick job to do whilst the kettle is boiling. Damp clean a kitchen drawer etc

notanothertakeaway · 17/03/2022 12:27

Daily walk

Ruthless decluttering, so the house always feels tidy

I have an A 4 file with clear pouches. Everything goes in there as soon as it comes in.

On a white sheet of paper I write in black marker what it is, then on the flip side the actual letter. Things that need action go to the front, things that are reference go to the back. The paper will say something like BANK STATEMENT or PAY WINDOW CLEANER.

I then shred the envelopes. Shredder is next to the kitchen bin.

RandomBasic · 17/03/2022 12:31

Last one. I listen to audio books when doing housework or something boring. I save those books for the chores, so I only get to find out what happened next if I put away the laundry.

PineappleWilson · 17/03/2022 12:33

Take a multivitamin every day. I take mine at night as part of my bedtime routine. If I take it at breakfast I get the kids wanting to swap vitamins with me. Bog standard adult multivitamin but I can tell when I haven't taken it.

Frankola · 17/03/2022 12:35

I drink a cup of hot water and lemon every morning.

It's great for digestion and getting vitamin C. It's such a small habit but I've felt lots of benefits from it

Cornettoninja · 17/03/2022 12:36

@RandomBasic

I got this app called alarmy which only turns off when you take a picture. I've made the picture my kettle, so I go downstairs and make a cuppa. While the kettle is boiling I empty the dishwasher. I have my cup of tea and then feel awake and have done something, rather than getting up groggy and grumpy after multiple snoozes.
That’s such a good idea!
pawpaws2022 · 17/03/2022 12:39

I aim for 10 fruit and veg a day. Which I don't usually get bit it means I often reach 7 at least!

Wash up and wipe kitchen surfaces as you're cooking then when you're finished cooking there's virtually nothing left to clean

I do 30 mins a day cleaning, of whatever needs doing. And nothing on weekends except laundry/wiping worktops/washing up

If it looks dirty and you spot it, clean it, don't leave it!

robovac · 17/03/2022 12:40

This is a work tip for myself. When sending important emails I always check "RSVP" before hitting send
R-recipient, make sure don't mix up surnames!
S-subject line, especially when I was copying an old email template
V-value/ body of the email, in my line of work we mention figures a lot in the emails so it is very important to not accidentally missing one zero or two!
P- paste the f*ing attachment

Parfait · 17/03/2022 12:42

@DropYourSword

I put things away as soon as I'm finished using them.

There was a thread on here today about people leaving the iron on by accident. It blew my mind that people wouldn't immediately turn it off, unplug it and put it away as soon as they'd finished ironing!!

I would not because its still hot at that point and it lives in a cupboard. Might melt stuff
Bluetrews25 · 17/03/2022 12:42

Doesn't flossing etc in the shower mean your shower takes longer therefore you use more hot water therefore you spend more on energy bills?

dgirluk · 17/03/2022 12:45

For those talking about the iron - I've got an "iron holder" screwed into the wall which takes a hot iron. So I just unplug and put it on while hot, been doing that forever and never had an issue.

again2020 · 17/03/2022 12:48

-Wash up after every meal and wipe worktops so mess doesn't build up
-The bin goes out when I get home from work the night before bin day so I don't have to do it later/ don't forget
-Before going to bed I check my car is locked (exactly 7 times, may be obsessive 🙈)
-When DD goes to the toilet I use the couple of minutes to do some stomach crunches or planking...it all helps 👍🤣

Yearsyonder · 17/03/2022 12:50

Any outstanding job that you're putting off, apply the '3 minute rule' which is where you will start it and do just three minutes of it and then it's ok to stop.

I find that I often do more than 3 minutes and somehow it gets done. It's a mental trick I use to overcome my own inertia about starting things I don't want to do.

Tlollj · 17/03/2022 12:52

Don’t start something you can’t finish.
Don’t make a mess in the first place.
Have a routine in the morning.

soberfabulous · 17/03/2022 12:52

Get up early and exercise.

Run after the school run and before work (DD starts school very early!)

Get all work clothes/outfits ready for the week ahead on a Sunday - I even hang bras and knickers on the hangers!

Prep coffee cup and kettle the night before

Prep anything possible the night before

Do squats whilst brushing teeth

Have hand weights in the bathroom, do a few moves whilst waiting for DD to come and brush her teeth/general faffing

Have a large bag in a cupboard with stuff to go to charity - take it once a month. Anything new that comes into the house- one thing has to leave.

FinallyHere · 17/03/2022 12:54

Never go to sleep on an argument with DH. Oh, and drink lots of water.

Simple, not necessarily easy.

Purpleavocado · 17/03/2022 12:54

Using the organised Mum app, adding things to it like manicure nails on Thursday, take multivitamins daily
Someone mentioned leftovers up the thread - when we get a takeway we portion it up into 4 plates (there are 2 of us), before we eat it, so that way we get two main meals out of it, rather than one huge one and one tiny one. Also, most main meals like spag bol, we plate up a third portion for a lunch, before we start eating

PrancingPalomino · 17/03/2022 12:55

I cleanse, tone, serum and moisturise every morning and evening.
Put on body lotion or fake tan after the shower.
Drink 2-3 bottles of water a day.
Make lists for everything!
If a letter from school comes home- deal with it straight away, same with party invitations. Then record details on the calendar/diary.

Barkingmadhouse · 17/03/2022 12:55

Go outside for fresh air every single day. It doesn't have to be walking miles but atleast something. To me it's a small thing that makes a big difference - I'm always amazed when I see people on here that don't leave the house

muddyford · 17/03/2022 12:59

I drink a pint of warm water when I get up then half a pint mid-morning and another mid-afternoon. But no lemon juice as it adds to tooth damage and vitamin C is destroyed by heat anyway.

KatherineJaneway · 17/03/2022 12:59

@bettybyebye

Drink a pint of water as soon as you wake up
Was coming on to say this
PiesNotGuys · 17/03/2022 13:01

Pay myself first. First thing that comes out on paydays is savings. The saved amount is never even factored in to household earnings in the first place.

Only take jobs/do work that means more effort=more money. Some months I can prioritise my work and work full pelt and earn more money if it’s needed. Some months I can ease off and prioritise myself or family time when that’s needed. I would never want to work any other way.
