On the look out for great new habits. What are yours? Here are a few of mine to start us off:

  • floss and use interdental in the shower
  • take one old item out of the fridge each time I open it
  • get dressed as soon as I get out of bed to avoid lounging in dressing gown

what are your great habits that help your life run smoothly? I'm in need of inspiration! thanks :)

“take one old item out of the fridge each time I open it”

Ok if I did this my fridge would be empty. I open the fridge so many times a day. How much old food do you have? I might chuck out one thing every couple of weeks.

Christinatherabbit · 17/03/2022 13:04

Always make sure I get out of the house every day even for a walk around the block.
Controversial I know but I always make the beds in the mornings as when they are made it makes the whole room look more organised and tidy which helps motivate me to do the rest.
Never leave the kitchen messy for the morning.
Always organise all school clothes/bags/polish shoes etc the night before no matter what.
Make lists for every day on my phone and try to make sure I have 80% ticked off before bed.
Aim to Always be ready 15mins before I need to be. I have terrible anxiety about being late!
Totally agree with the above and keeping a bottle of wine in the fridge for emergencies haha

Longingforatikihut · 17/03/2022 13:06

Have a place for EVERYTHING! So when you're tidying up you know where to put it and it doesn't get shoved somewhere and 'lost'. Don't buy anything that you can't think of where you would put it.

Chishnfips · 17/03/2022 13:06

Stand on 1 leg whilst brushing my teeth. My physio told me to do this to build up the muscles in my legs to help support my busted ankle but it also helps balance and overall strength and core.

dreammattemousse · 17/03/2022 13:10

SPF 50 every day!!!

I'm shit at everything else though

BeanyBops · 17/03/2022 13:10

My best advice for long term sustainable change is to change one thing at a time. Build each slowly into your routine as and when you feel like it.

There are several on the play store. Which one is it? What is the exact name, the picture?

EssexCat · 17/03/2022 13:12

@RandomBasic

Last one. I listen to audio books when doing housework or something boring. I save those books for the chores, so I only get to find out what happened next if I put away the laundry.
I do exactly this with my favourite podcasts/radio shows. I love the news quiz/now show so I only listen to it when I’m cleaning the kitchen which I hate!

Also ironing is always always done to a TV programme and I don’t let myself watch it unless I’m ironing.

My best habit is setting just 10 mins a day to sort something random out (junk drawer, shoe cupboard, odd socks, etc) those ten minutes add up over the week but it’s never too big a task.

2catsandhappy · 17/03/2022 13:18

Put away not down. Tidy up as you go along.

Hellorhighwater · 17/03/2022 13:22

I label plugs and chargers the moment they come into the house. It’s five thousand times easier to figure out what’s what in the million plugs under the bed and to find the charger you need. (Also, to bin chargers that I no longer own thing for!)

I write on things with sharpie a lot. Label Tupperware in the freezer with It, light bulbs with which thing they were bought to fit, where pillows belong and which way up the duvet/sheets go.

I learnt to properly fold a fitted sheet and do that thing where you put all the clean bedding for one bed change inside a pillowcase to keep it all together.

Take all the rubbish (wrappers, apple core, tissues etc) out of the car at the end of a long journey. Straight into the dustbin before I even enter the house. Remove all kids stuff like bags, books, coats etc as well so the car is alway clutter free for the next day. Hate a messy car!

I have a roll of masking tape that lives in the kitchen for this purpose. I write on the tape instead of directly on the lunchbox.

I bought one of those car bins for the reason. It velcros into the middle bit, lined with a small bin liner, the roll living at the bottom of the bin.

Most housework tasks are detestable but try to tackle at least one most days on a regular basis so they don't become overwhelming.

it's the Team Tomm app - yellow background with lady with dark hair
FastFood · 17/03/2022 13:43

Do not sleep with your phone in the bedroom.
For me it has been a massive game changer. I'm not remotely tempted to check something before sleeping, if I wake up in the middle of the night, I go back to sleep easily and my mornings are way better.

Mrsmadevans · 17/03/2022 13:48

Tidy the front room when we go to bed. When l Get up in the morning , l bath and dress before going downstairs, put the washing machine on and the dishwasher so it is done when l come back home, make the bed in the morning and take all crockery down and empty bins . It's all a routine for me now so l don't find it a chore tbh.

I plan using the calendar on my iPad.

It's helping me to be aware, as I set an alert.

Without it I just don't seem to think, especially when I'm so bogged down working at home. This way at 17.00 my calendar will ping and say something like 'put washing in'. Beauty is the calendar is easy to set as to repeat daily, repeat weekly.

I also find that when I see a job that needs doing, I do it and add to the calendar, with a weekly reminder. Slowly I've built up a personalised organiser that reminds me of my jobs!

doodleygirl · 17/03/2022 13:54

I exercise at least 5 days out of 7, it’s so ingrained now I feel rubbish if I don’t. Drink at least 2 litres of water a day.

VickyEadieofThigh · 17/03/2022 13:59

@Bluetrews25

Doesn't flossing etc in the shower mean your shower takes longer therefore you use more hot water therefore you spend more on energy bills?
What do you do with the floss when you've finished, too?
LizziesTwin · 17/03/2022 13:59

Don’t floss in the shower, you’re wasting water & money heating the water.

Turn off the tap while you’re brushing your teeth, you don’t need it running.

Play Ready Steady Cook with your fridge & cupboard rather than getting a takeaway or nipping out to the shops.

yellowsmileyface · 17/03/2022 14:01

I keep a big bottle of water in my room, so I always have access to water.

Write down a food item I need on a grocery list (I keep one on my phone) as soon as it runs out.

Post-its are my saviour. Any odd thing I need to do I write down as soon as I remember it needs doing.

Go for a daily walk, minimum of 20min.

Brush my teeth after dinner rather than before bed... too many times I've been too lazy/tired right before bed.

TheZenOne22 · 17/03/2022 14:08

Great thread - hoping to pick up some more tips. Mine are:

  • make bed as soon as I get out of it
  • never go to bed without washing dishes/cleaning the kitchen
  • cleanse/moisturise day and night - use sunscreen every day
  • have a bottle of water besides bed every night
KatyRebecca84 · 17/03/2022 14:12

@soberfabulous

Get up early and exercise.

Run after the school run and before work (DD starts school very early!)

Get all work clothes/outfits ready for the week ahead on a Sunday - I even hang bras and knickers on the hangers!

Prep coffee cup and kettle the night before

Prep anything possible the night before

Do squats whilst brushing teeth

Have hand weights in the bathroom, do a few moves whilst waiting for DD to come and brush her teeth/general faffing

Have a large bag in a cupboard with stuff to go to charity - take it once a month. Anything new that comes into the house- one thing has to leave.

You sound pretty perfect!
