To ask how to dispose of sex toys?

Bananananaa · 16/03/2022 19:33

NC for obvious reasons.

I have some old toys I've been holding on to ages because I don't know how to get rid of them.

At the moment I'm living with some family members so am very reluctant to put it in household waste even if it's directly in the bin outside.

One of the toys has a plug as well so I'm not even supposed to dispose of that in household waste. When I Google it says to take it to a local recycling centre...really??

How do you get rid of toys? Especially those with plugs?

Daily mail is garbage on earth (incase there's any of them lurking here looking for things to repost on their tragic site)

Lovehoney have a recycling service I think.

Bananananaa · 16/03/2022 19:47

@VanGoghsDog

Don't put them in a public bin, you should take them to the tip (aka "recycling center").

All electrical retailers have to take back items the same as they sell now, when you buy something, which is why LH do it, but you'd have to post them to them which seems like a lot of hassle. You could try Curry's?

Do you have any info on this LH post back thing? I'm happy to post it back to them but I couldn't find info on it. It sounded like they shut down their electrical returns thing that they used to do? I'm wondering if I'm missing something.

Does cutting the plug off negate the environmental aspect of throwing electrical items in the trash? I thought it would be the same thing whether there's a plug attached to an electrical item or not?

No, of course it doesn't. The rules apply to battery operated items as well.

And I can't imagine any use for a modern day plug, they are all bonded on these days.

Laughing now at the thought of OP taking her well used plug in vibrator to curry's for recycling 😂😂

This is what I thought. So I'm confused why PPs are suggesting I do this?

I actually didn't realise battery powered things fall under this too so thanks for that info

I was thinking Butt Plug 🙈

iamsoreadyforbednow · 16/03/2022 19:51

Charity shop.

VanGoghsDog · 16/03/2022 19:51

No, I don't have any details. I just keep mine until I go to the tip. Email them and ask?

Feelingoktoday · 16/03/2022 19:52

Attach it to a board and throw it in the river. As a runner I see lots of dildos in lakes and canals.

GrinGrinGrinGrin

I didn't stop to think "plug" might not obviously mean an electrical plug. Didn't think people would assume I meant a butt plug and a sink plug Grin

Should have been clearer in the OP, sorry!

Just take them to the tip in a box and tip into the electrical skip. Nobody will see what's in your box and once they're in the skip nobody will know they were yours.

Derailing the thread but your runs sound fascinating! I'm a runner and I've never found a dildo in a lake! Please please elaborate!!
Longcovid21 · 16/03/2022 19:54

For environmental reasons don't put them in a black bin bag. Woman up and take them to the tip, hidden in a box if needed and dispose of them properly.

Wrinklepicker · 16/03/2022 19:54

Line them up along the garden wall with a sign saying ‘free to a good home’

VanGoghsDog · 16/03/2022 19:55

I have a friend who works at an electrical wholesalers, they have a WEEE skip at his work, so I give small items to him. Not been quite brave enough to give him a sex toy yet!

Ok, maybe this is more of an option than I thought. I'm in London and the last time I went my local recycling centre/tip it was heaving with people, but that was mid pandemic so I guess it was probably busier than usual.

I'm intrigued at a mains powered sex toy. How old is it?!

iamsoreadyforbednow · 16/03/2022 19:56

@Wrinklepicker
Be sure to include their condition:
Brand new with tax/in box
Used - excellent condition
Used - good condition
Used - fair condition

the silicon has peeled away

Floralnomad · 16/03/2022 19:57

Our bin men collect small electrical items once a fortnight , the items must fit in a carrier bag and be placed next to the bin , if your council do something similar just do that .

Chloemol · 16/03/2022 19:57

Cut the plug off

Get ridin a bin

AHungryCaterpillar · 16/03/2022 19:59

@MindfulMarch

Just cut the plug off! Put them in a couple of carrier bags & then in the rubbish bag in the outside bin - surely your family isn't going to go through your rubbish?!?!?!
My mum actually does Go through her wheelie bins 🤦🏻 She found a pregnancy test in there once, she accused me of putting it there even though I don’t even live with her anymore 🤣 obviously someone didn’t want it in their own bin
VanGoghsDog · 16/03/2022 20:00

That's fine if you don't mind breaking the law 🤷🏻‍♀️

The plug being on it isn't relevant.

Wonnle · 16/03/2022 20:01

You could send them off somewhere when you get those letters with a prepaid envelope in . I used to get them from Anglian Water threatening that the water pipes from the outside stopcock would cost me a fortune if they needed replacing , sent them back a Screwfix catalogue or similar everytime

Xpologog · 16/03/2022 20:01

Cut plugs off. Cut leads off.
Are they smashable into small bits? If so wrap in newspaper, put on ground and whack with a hammer. Put wrapped in paper into a plastic bag in bin at home or out somewhere.
If not smashable wrap in a couple of plastic bags and bin or take a lot of other random crap to the tip and lob it all into general waste.

Honestly, these are widely available, currently, and always have been.
