To not want son to share Netflix password!

idontgetpaidenoughforthis · 16/03/2022 07:16

Someone is using our Netflix account when everyone in the smiley is at work. I'd got an idea that it was DS (18) girlfriend.

I changed after getting the notification that it was being used on a new device. DS wasn't at home until yesterday and he asked me for the new password to put in his smart tv. Then last night he went to girlfriends house. This morning I got an email notification that the account was signed into on a streaming stick at 23:37. It can only be him at girlfriend's house so her whole family can use it.

AIBU to think I pay for the service and someone else should not get it for free? Or am I being tight-fisted?

The sanctimony on this thread is something else.

@SofiaSoFar

Sharing logins is no better than pirated DVDs and CDs that used to be sold by dodgy types in pubs.

If you want Netflix then fucking well pay for an account.

Thankfully Netflix are now cracking down on this.

For anyone about to say, "why do you care?", I care because:
a) I invested in Netflix in its early days and still hold stock.
b) Piracy/theft/fraud is wrong. (Although it seems to be fine with MNers as long as it's a large company or the government you're ripping off.)

If you're still holding stock in Netflix you're badly advised

Netflix doesn’t pay royalties based on the number of streams.

Yes it does.

Not sure where you’ve got that from

As an investor, I get such things from Netflix investor relations.

but it’s wrong.

No it's not.[/quote]
You’re talking out of your arse, Sophia.

You don’t want to mither but you’re happy to blither.

Can you pm me your Netflix log in and password please?

BruceAndNosh · 17/03/2022 14:08

@CounsellorTroi

I’m with you OP. Don’t like sharing my account. I logged in on the TV at a holiday cottage recently and forgot to log out before leaving. Then found someone else was using my account, bloody cheek. I signed out of all my devices and changed my password.
We turned on TV at an airbnb, and it defaulted to Netflix, with three profiles left active. I'm assuming this login counts towards their 5 allowed profiles on their account, so they better not make a habit of it
Calphurnia88 · 17/03/2022 14:16

They didn’t just use it at the cottage. The login email I got was from a completely different location. So they took my details away with them. That is cheeky, to put it mildly.

@CounsellorTroi how did that work, surely they would have needed your login details to login from another device?

They must have had them, the cottage was in North Wales and I got a notification saying a new device had been logged in Hampshire. Haven’t been near Hampshire in years

@CounsellorTroi

Well that's just bollocks. They can't just find out your password because the account is logged in. It really does not work that way. 🙄

Blossomtoes · 17/03/2022 15:09

@CareBear50

Personally I wouldn't mind someone else using it as long as it didn't interfere with my ability to use it.
Same. It’s not pay per view.

Yep agreed, that’s not how it works at all! And if you’re silly enough to leave a device logged in on holiday then more fool you if someone watches it

jc12689 · 17/03/2022 15:14

Can’t see the problem as long as it doesn’t restrict you watching it

Except the same email and password that you to watch Netflix is used to access your account on line, so it's not great to share that with people you don't really know.

MissConductUS · 17/03/2022 15:19

Netflix is about to start charging extra for people who do this.

It did happen though. I got this email

The details
Device
Web browser
Location
Hampshire, United Kingdom
(This location may not be exact.)
Time
12 September 12:36 BST

It could restrict Op though. You’re only allowed to watch it at the same time as a couple of other people (depending on your package).

If girlfriend is watching, and DS is watching elsewhere, then OP may not be able to watch.

phishy · 17/03/2022 15:32

@CounsellorTroi those aren’t always accurate. Even after I changed my password so that only I knew it, it was telling me of random locations that had logged in.

It could be hacked I suppose but I think the location finder was not very accurate.

Calphurnia88 · 17/03/2022 15:39

@CounsellorTroi that email does suggest there was a dodgy login (assuming you don't recognise any of the info - although as a PP said, the location isn't always accurate), but it's unlikely to be the family that stayed in the cottage after you, unless you wrote down your password and left it there, or your password is something very obvious like 1234.

The only personal information you can access from a logged in account is the email address, you would still need the password to login from a new device.

CounsellorTroi · 17/03/2022 15:46

Actually I’ve realised the date was when I was staying at the cottage, but it was in North Wales so saying it was Hampshire is really wildly inaccurate! I still think whoever stayed in the cottage after me continued to use my account though as some unfamiliar (and not my cup of tea) stuff showed up in my continue watching list.

Feel a bit of an idiot now.

Onetraumaatatimeplease · 17/03/2022 15:50

I had this a while ago. I kept trying to watch Netflix and kept getting a generic error message. I had no idea why. One day I put it on and up popped another 3 profiles. They were DS girlfriend, girlfriends brother and girlfriends parents. Then it clicked, I couldn't watch a subscription I was paying for because them cheeky fuckers were all over it. I thought I was cheap only paying for one screen. Changed the password and kicked them all off.
