To not want son to share Netflix password!

Someone is using our Netflix account when everyone in the smiley is at work. I'd got an idea that it was DS (18) girlfriend.

I changed after getting the notification that it was being used on a new device. DS wasn't at home until yesterday and he asked me for the new password to put in his smart tv. Then last night he went to girlfriends house. This morning I got an email notification that the account was signed into on a streaming stick at 23:37. It can only be him at girlfriend's house so her whole family can use it.

AIBU to think I pay for the service and someone else should not get it for free? Or am I being tight-fisted?

@Pyri

I can’t believe how many uptight people on this thread. It’s just Netflix. Worst that happens is it gives you different “next watch” recommendations or puts you in different order on some tv show. It wouldn’t even occur to me to discuss “boundaries and respect” but just to ask him to set up a new user for himself and use that one.

I'd ask if she has it on one device or is the family enjoying it.
I share with my Dsis, we change the payment method every 6 months for an equal amount.

Florenz · 17/03/2022 08:25

Neflix will ban you and block your ISP if your account is used by many different devices at many different addresses. An account is only supposed be used by one household.

crossstitchingnana · 17/03/2022 08:26

@SausagePourHomme

ridiculous. It doesn't disadvantage you in any way. It is designed up to be shared
Yes it does. We have the two screen option and it could mean I can't watch it at home. We had this happen with my dd's friend.

Well my account is being used in Italy this week you get an email asking you if that is okay they don't ban you. I live in Wales whenever I sign in emails say I'm logging in from random places in the UK. Netflix ain't that good if they're bouncing around servers
JudgeRindersMinder · 17/03/2022 08:33

I used to be quite laid back about it until I went to watch something and couldn’t because ds’ pal was using it!!

It’s a bit awkward in your case as I’d not have an issue with ds signing in at his gf’s house, but I’d have an issue with others in the house using it!

SoP1 · 17/03/2022 09:22

But it does disadvantage her…it is against Netflix’s policy…and they’ve just announced they are trialling new software to identify people who are using the same account from multiple addresses.

CounsellorTroi · 17/03/2022 09:35

I’m with you OP. Don’t like sharing my account. I logged in on the TV at a holiday cottage recently and forgot to log out before leaving. Then found someone else was using my account, bloody cheek. I signed out of all my devices and changed my password.

TheTeenageYears · 17/03/2022 09:40

Netflix are trying to crack down on this and given they are one of the only platforms to have found a way to massively limit VPN usage I don't doubt they will succeed soon enough. Interestingly my DD's iPad sends one of those messages every time she uses it - she does use on phone/macbook but it only seems to send the sign in email when using her ipad. You can sign everyone out from settings, reset the password and then sign in for DS on his device's. Just explain it's a family privilege and for identity theft purposes the password is not going to be shared.

harriethoyle · 17/03/2022 09:50

@MintyFreshBreath

We have a 5 package deal and gave DSS access to one of the account. When we found out the ex had the cheek to sign herself up to the spare one we changed the password! DSS doesn’t know what it is, only we do. The ex may well watch on DSS’s account and we can’t stop that but she’s not bloody well stealing one of our spare ones the cheeky mare. Get her own and stop being a cheapskate!
Same @MintyFreshBreath and we pin protected our accounts too... and the kids are age appropriate so at one point she was restricted to 12A Grin
SofiaSoFar · 17/03/2022 09:53

Sharing logins is no better than pirated DVDs and CDs that used to be sold by dodgy types in pubs.

If you want Netflix then fucking well pay for an account.

Thankfully Netflix are now cracking down on this.

For anyone about to say, "why do you care?", I care because:
a) I invested in Netflix in its early days and still hold stock.
b) Piracy/theft/fraud is wrong. (Although it seems to be fine with MNers as long as it's a large company or the government you're ripping off.)

EmeraldShamrock1 · 17/03/2022 09:57

I think once Netflix cracks the sharing they'll lose a lot of customers.
They're increasing costs aren't worth it now there's plenty of competition and free streaming channels C4, VM.

I don't see the big deal in using someone's log-in at a cottage.

The onus is on the person leaving to log out.

It would be cheeky to change the password or something.

Given that Netflix (and others) pay royalties based on the number of times a piece of content is streamed, cracking down on the fraudsters/cheats is well worth losing some subscribers.

It's exactly why they're doing what they're now doing - lose the scammers, keep the fair customers.

They didn’t just use it at the cottage. The login email I got was from a completely different location. So they took my details away with them. That is cheeky, to put it mildly.

Netflix doesn’t pay royalties based on the number of streams. Not sure where you’ve got that from but it’s wrong.

Chely · 17/03/2022 10:13

We don't tell our kids the password, we put it in to devices at home and they can use it.
When they are adults they will have to get their own for use outside our home.

TheBigPeach · 17/03/2022 10:18

This will help you break the news about non sharing of the password www.cnn.com/2022/03/16/media/netflix-password-sharing-test/index.html

XenoBitch · 17/03/2022 10:34

The only people who have my password are my parents, and they pay me half towards it. They don't use it all that often, and we have never both been on it at the same time.

I read the clamp down on account sharing is only a trial happening in a small handful of countries at the moment.

frazzledasarock · 17/03/2022 11:40

How's that going to work re: Netflix charging using the account outside of the household, we use our account when we go on holiday and then log out when we leave.

As an investor, I get such things from Netflix investor relations.

but it’s wrong.

No it's not.

Mumoblue · 17/03/2022 11:46

YANBU. Sharing passwords is a no-no.
My teenage brother lives with me, and when he went to his girlfriend’s house he asked me if I minded them watching my Netflix. I said I had no problem with it as long as he input the password and logged off before he left, which he was absolutely fine with and there was no issue.
I’d have hit the roof if he’d shared the password with her or if she was using my account.

Lots of people use the same password for things anyway, so your son should know better than to give it out.

CounsellorTroi · 17/03/2022 11:47

@frazzledasarock

It would probably be fine if you used your own device, e,g laptop or tablet that you were already logged in on.
doodleygirl · 17/03/2022 11:50

I share my DD Netflix, she shares my Prime. Over the years various people have used both. As long as I can watch when I want to I really don’t care.

I think YABU and petty.
