For the past two weeks I’ve had a persistent headache which is absolutely relentless. It’s an excruciating sharp shooting pain in one side of my head which just will not go with OTC painkillers and it’s been present non stop all this time. Contacted my GP last week who thought it could be a migraine (no other migraine symptoms, not made better by darkness etc) but the maximum dose of migraine medication doesn’t touch it either. Noticed the pain is getting more intense over time and tried my GP again, who can’t fit me in for another appointment for another week. I’ve barely had headaches before and certainly not a persistent one for this length of time and I’m seriously concerned about the fact it’s getting worse rather than better and is impacting me both mentally and with my work (I’ve barely been able to work since this came on 2 weeks ago).

Spoke to DP this morning as I’m at my wits end and considering contacting 111 for some urgent help/investigation. DP says it’s clearly a migraine and I shouldn’t waste time contacting an emergency number and should wait out my GP appointment. Would appreciate your thoughts, I don’t want to waste anyones time but I really am at my wits end with this pain Sad, surely this isn’t normal?

How are you Tulipelle Daffodil

Daffodilz · 05/04/2022 23:02

See a GP.

theladywiththerainbowhair · 05/04/2022 23:18

Oh gosh. PLEASE get checked out. Not to scare you at all but I had this excruciating pain for a week before I lost all sensation in half of my body and had a severe stroke - I was only 22. Not saying yours is this at all!! But please please get checked!

LikeAStar1994 · 06/04/2022 02:49

I really hope the reason you haven't updated is because you are recovering and taking time out for yourself.

Only update if you want to. You don't owe anybody anything. Most people on MN would do well to remember that...

alexdgr8 · 06/04/2022 03:43

would like to know how you got on OP.
but of course, only if you wish to.
all the best anyhow.

TheOriginalEmu · 06/04/2022 04:45

@RockinHorseShit

Well aren't you lucky

Hardly lucky with Cluster Headaches, maybe I'm just not a drama llama 🙄

Calling a person a drama llama is so uncalled for. I once walked around on a broken pelvis for 4 days before seeing a doctor as it happened during childbirth and I assumed everyone felt like that after….but another time I was found curled up in the foetal position in the toilets at work with a ‘thunderclap’ headache caused by a new medication.
NoCleverNickname · 06/04/2022 05:21

I'm a nurse. If you are not allergic to Aspirin and have no other contraindications, you could try this, which my own GP put me on too after nothing ED gave me worked. Take 3 (three) dispirin tablets. I was in so much pain, I bought the chewable and stood there munching them in the chemist! The relief was immense. The action of Aspirin allows more blood flow.

I know 3 dispirin, when each one is 300 of Aspirin sounds a lot but it works.

You should still ask your GP for further tests.

Hesma · 06/04/2022 05:47

Call 111, that’s what it’s there for. Hope you feel better soon

tommyhoundmum · 06/04/2022 06:44

Go to A&E, please!

Stormchaser1502 · 06/04/2022 06:48

Really hope you’re ok OP?

HotToddyColdSauvignon · 06/04/2022 07:07

@tommyhoundmum

Go to A&E, please!
Read the thread in full please Hmm

Or at least the op’s updates…!

She went to a&e THREE weeks ago

MissMaple82 · 06/04/2022 07:11

@Seeline

If the migraine medication hasn't helped, then it's probably not a migraine.

I would ring 111 for advice if I couldn't get a GP appointment for another week.

Migraine medication doesn't always work. Medication in general doesn't always work!
Sswhinesthebest · 06/04/2022 07:49

I’m hoping she is ok too.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 06/04/2022 07:59

TWO WEEKS?

Forget 111 please go to A&E and get an MRI scan.

Your husband’s attitude is shocking.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 06/04/2022 08:00

Sorry, just realised I’m really behind on this.

ginslinger · 06/04/2022 08:20

@Trying81

As a few have said, if it feels like electric shocks then it sounds like nerve pain

I have occipital neuralgia and no painkillers work on it - as they’re not used to treat nerve pain

Try an ice pack, if the nerve is inflamed it may provide some brief relief - definitely see a GP at the very least.

The only thing that’s worked for me has been nerve block injections - finally got to see a neurologist after months of GPS thinking I just wanted painkillers from them

exactly what I had - fortunately I managed it with ice packs and it never came back but it was grim. It was like toothache in my scalp
Historyherstory · 06/04/2022 08:23

OP hope you’re getting some medical help now

Cats1234567 · 06/04/2022 08:23

Hope you are ok OP 💐

SteakExpectations · 06/04/2022 08:25

I’ve been thinking about this thread ever since OP went to A&E and check back occasionally to see if there’s an update.
I really hope she’s okay.

crepesncream · 06/04/2022 08:37

I don't understand why pre pandemic you'd have probably been able to see your doctor quite promptly. Why has everything changed so rapidly.So many threads now about people who can't see their doctors anymore. Yet before the pandemic they could. Confused
Hope you get it sorted soon OP.

Mummacake · 06/04/2022 08:37

OP I had something very similar a few years ago. You're not wasting NHS time at qll. My headaches were so bad that I considered going to A&E on Christmas Day - I was so worried as I don't often get headaches 😕 I had a brain scan and blood tests, I was deficit in vitamin D! Was given a course of high dose vit D and haven't had those headaches since. The Dr did say that they still don't really understand the impacts of low Vit D. Something to consider perhaps?

Starbeach · 06/04/2022 08:45

Please go get checked again or go to A&E. If it was your OH I'm sure he would have begged you to take him to A&E by now

canary1 · 06/04/2022 09:02

This sounds terrible, of course you need to be seen and investigated properly now

Seleniummillenium · 06/04/2022 09:17

Your husband is an arse.

I’ve had a migraine pretty much every day for the last fifteen months. It’s a horrible situation to live with. I would strongly advise you see a chiropractor. They can work wonders.

I would also see your gp and get referred to a neurologist. That said my gp won’t refer me to a neurologist until I’ve tried at least four different preventative meds for a few months.

I certainly wouldn’t ignore those symptoms or be fobbed off with medication. Pain relief and preventative meds are great if they work but that won’t get to the root of why you are having them.

Hope you can get sorted💐
