I've never experienced this before but it dawned on me that it must happen quite a bit.

Someone local to me ran out of money when building her extension and has put up a Justgiving page to raise the money to finish it.

It's raised about £30 the last time I checked and not budging.

Anyone else experienced CF JG pages?

Local family had a child eligible to go and compete in a sports competition overseas. Eligibility was based on accumulated points over a season, rather than being amazing,so they had to cover costs. There set up a JG page so for the whole family to go (long haul), and we’re going to stay an extra week to “really discover this beautiful place. Basically, they wanted a family holiday at someone else’s expense.

[quote MissConductUS]There's a subreddit for these. Some are really funny.

I have bookmarked this for later, but the first few I have looked at have had me LOL-ing. Even the title tickled me 'Don't Fund Me.' Grin

Thanks for flagging this up @MissConductUS Smile

As with so many of these things, I don't in the least mind helping out ... the entitled hoping to take me for a mug is what I mind

rebekuh · 13/03/2022 12:45

Ive seen a few where people are raising money to treat their terminally ill cat/dog

🙄

WeDontShutUpAboutBruno · 13/03/2022 13:19

I used to run a small business and had people message me for free stuff all the time.

One of the more memorable ones was someone who messaged asking me to contribute a prize worth "at least £50" for her raffle, when I pressed further about the charity she was very vague, so I found her Facebook page and she was getting people to contribute raffle prizes so she could take her kids on holiday.

I questioned her if this was the case and she admitted it was for a holiday, but that her kids really deserved it as they suffered so much through lockdown.

I declined her offer, despite her telling me it would be great for business as she would advertise me to her followers (about 100), she then threatened to announce to the internet that my business was crap and said she would ruin me 🤣

There are cheeky fuckers everywhere, not just on JG.

Bananabutter · 13/03/2022 13:24

What exactly is the problem? You don’t have to give to it you know. It’s there if you want to.

DrDetriment · 13/03/2022 13:27

Someone I know is looking to raise £20k for facial surgery to make them look more feminine. They are happy to keep their penis though because they 'are a lesbian and the penis can be a female sex organ'. A scarily large number of people have contributed with the usual stunning and brave comments. This trans person says this surgery is the same as breast reconstruction after cancer and refuses to see how disgustingly offensive that is.

@Beachbreak2411

I follow a page on FB that gives me the rage.. they had a fundraiser to buy furniture for their huge house they were renovating at HUGE expense.. because they couldn’t afford to buy furniture in keeping with the age of the property. They plan to run this place as a hotel and post constant pictures of their children enjoying all the amazing space.. whilst asking others for money.. I can’t afford to buy myself furniture let alone rich people!!
Why follow the page if you hate them? Confused

XenoBitch

I saw one where a dad wanted to raise money to get his young son a gaming PC, as the lad had been going through a tough time.
Turns out the money raised would be buying the dad a new gaming PC, and he would be giving the old one to his kid“

What an arsehole!

But then there are clearly a lot of gullible people out there, so who can blame arseholes for trying, really?

Do they match? I've got standards dontchaknow!

maeveiscurious · 13/03/2022 14:39

The most scams were during Covid for feeding children. One local woman vanished with £400 and not at all accountable.

Give to a registered charity and they can be held to account if they don't spend the money wisely.

The issue is that once you have paid that money over to somebody you can't really control how they spend it, or get it back.

I know of a couple who set up a GFM to pay for treatment for their very unwell child, they raised over a million, sadly the child died before they could even plan the treatment. That family now have over a million pounds in the bank and keep posting selfies of themselves in designer clothes, driving expensive cars. It was their money to keep, legally, they haven't broken any laws, but it's made a lot of their followers very angry.

I know of another person who frequently had GFM set up for various things to assist their child, who also very sadly died. They had over £100k paid out to them over a couple of years and dragged their sick child out to places like Dubai to take selfies.

Nobody is regulating it, that's the issue.

hollyivysaurus · 13/03/2022 15:24

@Ginfilledcats - Are her initials 'CF'? Because I know someone who did the exact same thing about ten years ago to try and go to RADA I think after the same degree and I thought it was really cheeky back then. (Pun not intended, those are genuinely her initials which I never realised!) If not there are two of them in the wild!

I never mind giving when it's someone I know and there is a genuine tragedy or a circumstance that really needs support, or if they're just generally raising money for a well known charity, but some of them are shocking!

OakPine · 13/03/2022 15:43

I also hate the SM "here's a link to my charity fundraiser. I'm walking to the end of the street in memory of my pet goldfish".
I gave to a couple of these on Facebook, and never even got a thanks.
To be clear I didn't do it to get recognition, but I met these people on a daily basis and not one of them said "oh thanks btw"
Fuck that. I'm not donating my money to make them look good.

matthancockslovechild · 13/03/2022 15:51

Someone I know set one up trying to raise £00000s to pay for cosmetic surgery after weight loss surgery - boob job etc. She raised quite a bit - god knows how. Didn't get a penny from me. The whole thing is a vanity project, a want, not a need. And when she earns over 60k, is grabby as fuck. Wish she would close it down and refund all the donors tbh.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 13/03/2022 15:52

Ignore me if they've already been mentioned, but there are also the more obvious begging threads on here

Funny how they so often pop up late at night or at the weekend - maybe they think the mods will be off? - but fortunately MNHQ are good at adding warnings or zapping the threads if they get too blatant (like the one who made a few silly excuses then posted an email address so people could send money direct)

I've never heard of this 'Justgiving' thing, maybe OP @MrsMingech means Go Fund Me? Which is as far as I know the official and only funding avenue on the net. Anyway I can understand a Go Fund Me for pets, as it can be extremely difficult to get insurance for them, and from my experience most people don't even know health insurance for pets exist. I think a GFM for pets is a noble and genuine thing. Where as humans looking for funding for funerals (how does anyone not know about 5 pound to 10 pound per month funeral insurance?), trips to disneyland, renovations etc is not. I'd donate to save an animal before I ever donate for a renovation, trip or funeral.

Franca123 · 13/03/2022 17:59

A friend of a friend is raising money for face feminising surgery. He's not raised much!!!
