I've never experienced this before but it dawned on me that it must happen quite a bit.

Someone local to me ran out of money when building her extension and has put up a Justgiving page to raise the money to finish it.

It's raised about £30 the last time I checked and not budging.

Anyone else experienced CF JG pages?

RishiRich · 12/03/2022 22:39

Flowers ElvisWife I'm sorry about your son. That's an example of JG being used to do something truly good.

A family I knew moved abroad, not for any particular reason but it had always been their dream. It had taken them so long to do it that they had a grown-up daughter who had got married and had DC. She obviously didn't move with them. A couple of years later, one of their other DC set up a Go Fund Me to raise money for the parents to fly home for a holiday to visit this daughter, because they were 'wonderful people and flights are so expensive and they haven't see their DD or their GC for two years' Confused
**@PartyPlan- yes! What the developing world does not need is a load of over-privileged, unskilled teenagers building a toilet block or wherever. The money to pay their own skilled workforce yes! Loads of articles around this. Same with the big charities fund raising treks in the developing world which do nothing for the people living there. However raise enough money through fundraising for a western based charity and you get your trip of a lifetime.

A lot of teens in our town do world challenge or similar. I think the child is encouraged by school to raise money themselves. We've had a few leaflets through the door offering babysitting, pet sitting etc and a kid locally did regular cake sales. But lots of the parents are on local fb saying "the teen" is raising money by selling either some sort of carpentry item that dad/grandad has made, or some low value item (say £5ish) that parents have obviously bought in bulk and selling for a small profit. In both cases it looks like the parent/grandparent is doing most of the donkey work and the teen is under the illusion they themselves are raising money!Confused

That's not to mention that it's essentially a holiday with a few days "building a toilet/school etc" which is possibly not massively helpful given they will be 16 year olds with zero building experience or relevant skills.
A friend did this for her dc.

He had to raise 3k for a charity work trip with school.

So friend bought a load of stuff online and held parties on behalf of son to sell it. It was mainly jewellery, so son was unlikely to have done anything to help.

She then wrote her sons university personal statement and included the fact that he’d set up a successful business buying and selling this stuff that he had nothing to do with. He didn’t even write his own statement!

Junipercrumble · 12/03/2022 22:50

Those people who raise money because they dont have pet insurance, contents insurance, travel insurance and raise enough to pay what they need to pay but still dont get pet insurance, contents insurance or travel insurance thereafter, and just beg for more cash every time!!
That's the essence of entitlement to me. Makes a mockery out of people who get themselves covered Angry

ladygindiva · 12/03/2022 22:52

A lady I know did a go fund me to buy a puppy. She was unemployed and already had a dog. I was a bit 😱

Kanaloa · 12/03/2022 22:52

@BrioNotBiro

I had one from someone who had just inherited her parents' house and wanted money to completely refurbish it - kitchen, bathroom, windows, CH, the lot. Apparently it was her mother's dying wish 'that the house will be beautiful" Hmm
Might get DH to start up a page for our house lol. It’s definitely my dying wish that my house should be beautiful. I’m not dead yet but the kids are very cute and I think would look fab posing in my front room with sad faces holding signs that say ‘please help mummy renovate our house she needs a conservatory.’
Kanaloa · 12/03/2022 22:54

Although really I can’t get too cross with these people. I think it’s absolute nonsense and cheerfully decline to ever donate to any of them - I can’t fund my own dream trip, why would I pay for yours? But I think on the other hand you need to take some personal responsibility, if nobody donated to them they’d stop.

Crikeyalmighty · 12/03/2022 23:02

@RishiRich. Wonder if I should get people to fund our £7.5k removal costs back to UK because it’s proving a pain in the arse for various reasons post Brexit. Some people are unreal .

Latenightreader · 12/03/2022 23:08

I remember one from a woman who moved to the States and was fundraising for a ticket to the UK to visit her family for Christmas. She was working over there and had moved just because she liked the idea (and thought it would be like TV). She raised nothing. I think everyone agreed with me that if you choose to move abroad you accept that either you plan ahead and save for flights, or you accept you'll see family infrequently.

Twentypast · 12/03/2022 23:09

@MrsLegend

A friend of a friend set one up to raise money for their dog's operation.

I have pet insurance for that!

I have pet insurance. We pay over £100 per month because he's 10. I pay for the highest lifetime cover. £8k per condition.

When he was diagnosed with cancer we found out the total cost of treatment was around £13k.

A friend set up a page. I was really reluctant as I didn't want to be seen to be grabby. But people did donate and we were able to go ahead.

Having insurance doesn't mean you're completely covered. It was a shock.

Girlmumdogmumboymum · 12/03/2022 23:10

I know someone who's set up a few, first ne was when she lost her child due to neglect, she wanted 15k to put her partner through driving lessons and buy a minivan for them to live in and travel the country.

Then she set one up for a tattoo.
I didn't donate to either fund.

cheasypeasypie · 12/03/2022 23:11

After coming across a recent one posted about on here (now deleted), I'll never donate again.

RishiRich · 12/03/2022 23:12

What was that one for @cheasypeasypie?

TheFoldOx · 12/03/2022 23:19

I'm quite tempted now to set up a GFM page just stating that I could do with some extra cash, no particular reason, so please sent a few £ my way! I wonder if any fool would donate?

TyrannosaurusRegina · 12/03/2022 23:20

A friend of mine set one up for her wedding asking for 20k. Her hubby to be spends his time on his arse, no job, just smoking weed all day. I and other friends were a bit like 😳 It's not raised one penny and has been up for about a year.

EIisheva · 12/03/2022 23:21

I did fantasise about crowdfunding my eyebags surgery and maybe a butt lift

Like....
Nobody has to give it, right! I’ve often wondered if you get any cash for something so daft

I reckon a witty post would probably raise a couple of hundred quid

ThinWomansBrain · 12/03/2022 23:28

I suppose if you're subscribing because you listn to a podcast, it's a way of funding what you're listening to and presumably enjoying, particularly if it's ad free. It's a bit like those twitter pages whre they ask you to 'buy the poster a cup of coffee - doesn't hurt to do it once in a while, and there's no pressure to donate.

There was a post to a random justgiving page, asking people to give to an individual so that they could give it to charity Hmm Ukraine related. Just give to the bloody charity directly, tick the gift aid box. I did report the post, and it was removed pretty quickly, but I really don't get why anyone would do that, let alone post somewehre to encourage others to give to it.

chaosrabbitland · 12/03/2022 23:28

@willstarttomorrow

And pets. This seems to be a big one right now- pet needs thousands of pound of treatment. I have an old stray moggy who is not insureable. I have had the conversation with family (and queen whiskers) that there is no fancy treatment and a pain free end. She is still here and ruling the roost 8 years later so I do not think she can moan about that!
im a rabbit keeper and on facebook i belong to lots of bunny groups and we are a big tight knit community , i have contibuted donations to a rabbit owner whos bunny needs hundreds worth of vet treatment for an operation or treatment for an ongoing severe issue and iv never felt its taking the mickey , its what we in the rabbit community do and we dont begrude helping a fellow bunny owner , we are all from different parts of the world , but the one bond we have is our love of rabbits , people that think those asking for donations to their pets just dont understand this , , i will agree that old age is something that has to be managed in pets whatever the pet is and no treatment is neccesary if its just not going to benefit the animal in the long term
cheasypeasypie · 12/03/2022 23:32

@RishiRich

What was that one for *@cheasypeasypie*?

Someone posted about their work colleague crying poverty only to realise her mother was a very wealthy woman and had left her lots of money in her will. That didn't stop the colleague accepting a six-figure sum (started by the OP) from one of the fundraising sites.

Holskey · 12/03/2022 23:33

One asking the world to pay for a nail course. She promoted it on next door on FB and was quickly told that it was not a worthwhile charitable cause.

Worse for me was the mother of a little baby who had had to have some emergency, life-saving treatment. I was genuinely feeling for this poor family until I realised the story was only being told for the purposes of encouraging donations. For some toys apparently. Who would try to profit from such a thing?

@Whawasthat more fool you for being proud and silly my dear.

Dogmum40 · 13/03/2022 00:48

My acquaintances husband has a dangerous hobby, he went out one day to do this ridiculous hobby, got warned against doing it that particular day from officials due to conditions but ignored advice, did it, broke his back, head injury, several limbs and ribs and many fractures! Spent over a year in hospital.

Now him and his wife have set a go fund me page up to make their house wheelchair friendly as he’s now disabled!

I do feel genuinely sorry for him as he’s lost his independence and job but they are now chasing compo from the council and an adventure based company for allowing him to do it! Cheeky fucker! He got warned! They sent emails and texts on the day plus told him in person but he knew better and due to ignoring the advice he’s now he’s disabled and can’t work and everyone else has to pick up the pieces! He’s got over 50k on go fund me already, I’m not sure how his compensation claim is doing as I refuse to ask

OpheliaThrupps · 13/03/2022 01:11

I can't really get annoyed, they're quite funny in a total-lack-of-self-awareness way Grin

Obviously I don't give any money! Why should it bother you though?
