I've never experienced this before but it dawned on me that it must happen quite a bit.

Someone local to me ran out of money when building her extension and has put up a Justgiving page to raise the money to finish it.

It's raised about £30 the last time I checked and not budging.

Anyone else experienced CF JG pages?

@PartyPlan- yes! What the developing world does not need is a load of over-privileged, unskilled teenagers building a toilet block or wherever. The money to pay their own skilled workforce yes! Loads of articles around this. Same with the big charities fund raising treks in the developing world which do nothing for the people living there. However raise enough money through fundraising for a western based charity and you get your trip of a lifetime.

A lot of teens in our town do world challenge or similar. I think the child is encouraged by school to raise money themselves. We've had a few leaflets through the door offering babysitting, pet sitting etc and a kid locally did regular cake sales. But lots of the parents are on local fb saying "the teen" is raising money by selling either some sort of carpentry item that dad/grandad has made, or some low value item (say £5ish) that parents have obviously bought in bulk and selling for a small profit. In both cases it looks like the parent/grandparent is doing most of the donkey work and the teen is under the illusion they themselves are raising money!Confused

That's not to mention that it's essentially a holiday with a few days "building a toilet/school etc" which is possibly not massively helpful given they will be 16 year olds with zero building experience or relevant skills.

@willstarttomorrow

And pets. This seems to be a big one right now- pet needs thousands of pound of treatment. I have an old stray moggy who is not insureable. I have had the conversation with family (and queen whiskers) that there is no fancy treatment and a pain free end. She is still here and ruling the roost 8 years later so I do not think she can moan about that!
This is especially common with horses. Someone "rescues" an ex racer (ie buys it cheap at auction) and then starts raising money for their rescue project ie new hobby 🙄
CarltonPeach · 12/03/2022 19:38

I stay well clear of stuff like this - got conned at work with someone from different department and their sponsor-me crap…. She wanted the money before the event so we all chipped in there and then, just to get rid of her hanging round whining at us. She promptly went ‘off sick’ taking our money with her!!!
Never saw her or the money again!!!
Any begging crap now goes straight in the bin or just gets a plain ‘no, we got conned before’ answer!!

BrioNotBiro · 12/03/2022 19:40

I had one from someone who had just inherited her parents' house and wanted money to completely refurbish it - kitchen, bathroom, windows, CH, the lot. Apparently it was her mother's dying wish 'that the house will be beautiful" Hmm

@PartyPlan

I hate the ones that are basically charity tourism. Help little Jonny raise £5k to go on a trip to far flung destination to build a school. Would much rather give the work to local people with actual skills and not fund a trip for someone useless.
This is my pet peeve, too. Always seems to be saving sea turtles in Mauritius. I'm very happy to support fundraising efforts but not if this only means a JG page set up and circulated by their parents!
JauntyJinty · 12/03/2022 19:41

I remember seeing one from a friend of a friend on facebook about his father being ill in another country and needing to raise quite a large amount (£20,000 I think from memory) to get him treated and home.

So far so reasonable I hear you thinking - but this friend of a friend could easily have funded it himself by selling 2 or 3 from his fancy watch collection!

LadyMary50 · 12/03/2022 19:43

Their was actually one on my local Facebook today. An 18yr old girl was asking for donations for her grandmothers funeral, she even posted a picture of her grandmother lying in a hospital bed obviously at deaths door, bloody shocking..Strangly enough only 2 weeks ago she was asking for donations to enable her to do a degree🤔

A580Hojas · 12/03/2022 19:43

The one that stuck in my mind was that guy who asked for money for his family Christmas. He got £8 fucking grand or something ridiculous.

I consider myself very middle class and very comfortable. We've never spent more than £1,000 at Christmas including food and drink - even in the year DS got a PS4 and DD got a laptop. Most years more like a few hundred.

homeedregret · 12/03/2022 19:45

@Bluelillies I thought we knew the same person (the Princess name was really played on) but in this case the child was physically disabled and they wanted to buy a 'pre wheel chair' as the NHS only supplied one aged 3 or 4. Mum explained on the page that at £800 it was very expensive. Which was understandable, until she then posted pics of them at Disney World, with 'much needed holiday'. People who can afford to go to Disney (they paid for it themselves) should be able to spare £800 for something much more important than a Disney holiday for an 18 month old.

LowlandLucky · 12/03/2022 19:45

jednewstar What a bloody brass neck, i hope they didn't raise a penny

ElvisWife · 12/03/2022 19:48

Yes some people are incredibly cheeky, but, Can I give a different view...

This could well out me, but here goes...

My son died abroad, he took his own life, his friends set up a just giving page so he could be repatriated, and funeral costs covered.

I will be eternally grateful to everyone who donated! Without them i wouldnt have my beautiful boy back.

There's is still some money left, which will eventually be donated to MH charitys.

There’s more than one of these parents?
Bloody hell
No,my families little one was as healthy as the next kid-nothing at all wrong with her,but mum does have some problems with her health
I have children and have been on a very low income-there’s no way I’d beg for money then use my own cash to go on a posh holiday
In fact there have been times I haven’t been able to eat but they are my kids and I pay for them

I saw something like this on Twitter - October/November 2020 I think it was. A man (circa mid 30s, single, 3000+ followers,) kept posting a link to his 'justgiving' page begging for money as his hours had been cut and he wanted to be able to afford his bills.

He posted the link 5-10 times a day, and around 40 of his followers kept reposting/retweeting it. I never gave, but I kept looking at it, and he raised £1900 in 6 weeks! FFS, he was no worse off than millions of others and it really pissed me off. It wasn't for anything specific like private healthcare or dental or vet bills; it was just extra spends for Christmas. Hmm

Bluelillies · 12/03/2022 19:54

Thinking about it-the lady who owns our fast food store once set up a gofundme so her and hubby could go on a cycling trip somewhere aboard for charity-vague on which one (we have our own linked to the business)
We had the links,Sponsor forms wafted under our noses and a lot of presure to cough up ‘it’s just £20!’
My job is a minimum wage job that can be brutal-she’s a fucking millionaire and her husband is even more rich
Pay for your own trip!

MurmuratingStarling · 12/03/2022 19:55

@ElvisWife That's fine. Smile And I am SO sorry to hear about your son... Flowers

This is a very genuine case, I would most definitely contribute to this.

I'm very sorry for your loss Thanks

This is not what this thread is about, yours was a just cause.

One dude posted his JG page on AIBU (it was for an expensive wedding that his fiancée had set her heart on).

He got fucking slaughtered.

ElvisWife · 12/03/2022 20:02

Thank you, I just wanted to give a different point of view
My son lived and worked in the country he was in so not on holiday or anything, but as I said, without the kindness of other people, I wouldn't have git him home.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/03/2022 20:02

This is another thing I don't understand. Back in the day you'd write down the names, do the activity, and then collect the cash based on your results
Withn the net it's even easier now, but no - folk seem to want cash upfront

My favourite was the guy at work who did a sponsored slim, put more weight on instead, and told us all "You can still give me the money if you like" Confused

Crikeyalmighty · 12/03/2022 20:03

@ElvisWife. Please don’t feel you have to explain— there are some fantastically needed just giving pages.

A plague on those who post for extensions, holidays, extra Xmas spending money etc — you ruin the name for others

Fair to say that the gofundme appeals I have seen on FB linked to friends have been for very genuine, tragic reasons .I think it is unfair to describe all appeals as grabby …a very recent one is for a friends niece aged 2 years old who has neuroblastoma and the families life has been thrown up in the air since Christmas when she was diagnosed.. Understandable that they are trying to raise money so the parents can care for their toddler for the last few months of her life without the added stress of paying bills etc .

No one has said they are all grabby! People have described ones that are!

Dr Christian Jensen is a cracker.
He got stung for libel and thinks his fans should pay up.
Currently standing at £10,210 which is well short of the £125,000 plus substantial costs due.
