I've never experienced this before but it dawned on me that it must happen quite a bit.

Someone local to me ran out of money when building her extension and has put up a Justgiving page to raise the money to finish it.

It's raised about £30 the last time I checked and not budging.

Anyone else experienced CF JG pages?

A bit of background for anyone who missed it. Looks like the final bill may be in the region of £425k

Arlene Foster libel costs TV doctor £425,000.

I forgot to say - quite a few of the donations are from people who object to Arlene Foster and who have chosen inventive and/or witty names and happily paid £5 to make their point. Grin

I've never seen one as cheeky as an extension but I have seen a few that have raised my eyebrows.

Lady whose self employed income was obliterated during lockdown started a go fund me for her kids birthday party and then subsequently for their living costs. It came out on Facebook that she wasn't declaring earnings so that's why she wasn't receiving furlough. It also came out that her children were the toe rags stealing from the corner shop and running people down in their electric scooters.

Someone else started a fund to kick start her art career. Last I looked she had about £30 in there.

No worries, of course some really genuine and very worthwhile causes happen, which makes the grabby ones even worse!

TheChild · 12/03/2022 21:03

I remember a friend setting up a Just Giving page to pay for her wedding. Instead of the traditional gift lift/poem request for money in the invites she shared a link on Facebook to her Just Giving page asking people to donate, regardless of whether they were actually invited!
The wedding never went ahead in the end.

I often see fundraising pages for people who want to go to drama school or dance school “cos it’s my dream”. Yeah well my dream is to buy a red convertible, what makes you think your dream is more special than mine? Just get a loan for your education like everyone else does!

3totheright4totheleft · 12/03/2022 21:19

The front page of our local paper last week was devoted to a crowdfunding campaign launched by a teenager who wanted to transition but had been denied treatment by the Tavistock Clinic. The Ukrainian crisis and the area's attempts to help had been relegated to page 2. A week later I still feel absolutely furious about this for so many reasons.

Useranon1 · 12/03/2022 21:29
@Useranon1 because why would people donate towards taking someone's partner on a holiday for no reason?? The rest of us pay for our holidays. They both had full time jobs!
Oh sure, I thought the joke was about Ireland!

Floydthebarber · 12/03/2022 21:50

That is the kind of thing justgiving is for though. His friends were raising funds for something no one would ever foresee having to consider. Flowers

MrsLegend · 12/03/2022 21:58

A friend of a friend set one up to raise money for their dog's operation.

I have pet insurance for that!

papper · 12/03/2022 22:02

I feel the same about crowd funding and patreon. So grubby and grabby.

No I don't want to fund your starting a (usually nice lifestyle) business. Nor do I want to subscribe, pay you X a month to fund your career choice.

If you want to buy a printer/ make a vanity project thing, get a second job or save so that you can afford it. Then make money by selling what you have made. The entitlement is horrible.

autienotnaughty · 12/03/2022 22:05

I donated to a page for a local mum who was terminally ill. It was to raise money for last holiday for the family. This was about 7/8 years ago. Bumped into her in the pub the other month no idea if she beat the odds or swindled people out of money.

HangingOver · 12/03/2022 22:09

Around here it's become very fashionable to be a boss babe. So many Kickstarters for utterly rubbish not remotely thought through "businesses" that are just total vanity projects. One girl I know just spent the Kickstarter money on her rent.

Comedycook · 12/03/2022 22:10

I'm really old fashioned. If I can't afford stuff, I don't get it.

FangsForTheMemory · 12/03/2022 22:11

I remember the first one that had me unpeeling my eyebrows from the ceiling: a woman wanting a few thousand for her 'dream wedding', with much emphasis on the fact that she was pregnant and wanted to get married before the baby arrived.

You can get married for a couple of hundred if it's the marriage that's important to you.

DotBall · 12/03/2022 22:11

A friend-of-a-friend set one up to ask others to help pay for their child’s graduation present 🤣

EeeICouldRipATissue · 12/03/2022 22:15

Meh, I wouldn't set one up and wouldn't donate to one either.
If somebody's daft enough to donate to pay for someone's decorating or holiday or whatever, more fool them surely?!

mum2bee2022 · 12/03/2022 22:20

@homeedregret

I have a relative who is a very keen runner and made it a lifetime goal to run every international marathon. He cleverly got around it by doing it for charity. So Action Cancer or whatever would say you have to raise at least £3k to enter (this included flights and accommodation) so he'd set up pub quizzes, bag packing, car boot sales etc 'for cancer' and everyone thinks he has a heart of gold. He's gone all around the world free of charge due to the kindness of others, who think they are raising large amounts for charity. Once the expenses are paid the charity would be lucky to get a quarter of the amount raised.
That’s awful
oakleaffy · 12/03/2022 22:31

Vet fees ones.
Can't afford Vet's fees, or insurance?
Don't get a pet.

Clarabe1 · 12/03/2022 22:32

Thank God it’s not just me! I have seen some people raising money for funeral costs and I know full well they have holidays abroad, nice cars etc. Just pay for the fucking funeral you tightwads. Can nobody die nowadays without the public being expected to pay for it? Where is the dignity? People are so entitled nowadays. It’s horrid.

JudgeJ · 12/03/2022 22:33

@AllOfUsAreDead

More fool the idiots that donate really. They are cheeky fuckers, but they rely on morons and there's plenty of them in the world.
Exactly, if everyone were to ignore these begging posts maybe people would stop trying.
15MinutesOlder · 12/03/2022 22:33

One of the parents from primary got her eldest son into the local grammar school and set up a page for a school trip that they wanted him to go on. It was a cricket or rugby team trip, not even educational.

GrannyBloomers · 12/03/2022 22:35

I listen to a lot of podcasts and and surprised how many people subscribe via Patreon. I suppose it’s no different to setting up a band, gigging and becoming successful. But many of the hosts have full time jobs which they talk about and then it seems donations are used to buy equipment? Definitely finding someone’s hobby however good the output is

My late mother used to tell of how she was ostracized by a lot of women she worked with because she didn't give money into a collection for another woman who had lost everything in a fire and she had no insurance, her view was that they, my parents, paid for insurance, the 'victim' and her husband didn't bother but spent a lot of time in the pub.
