To think history will judge the U.K. over ukraine

Letshaveablackcelebration · 10/03/2022 07:01

I am so ashamed at how the U.K. is the only country in Europe effectively closing its doors to Ukrainian refugees. These are mostly women and children fleeing a country that has collapsed in the space of 2 weeks. A maternity hospital was bombed yesterday.

The rest of Europe is opening its arms and helping in every way it can but the U.K. had pretty much slammed the door, made it as difficult as possible to come. The U.K. signed the refugee convention in the 50’s that said that people fleeing war don’t need tons of paperwork and yet that’s exactly what they are asking people for.

I feel so embarrassed when everyone else is helping that we are doing nothing- we are an outlier in Europe.

I hate what this country has become under this disgusting government. I see so many posts on social media or brits wanting to do more.

@FindingMeno

I dream of a world with no borders.
So does Putin, it seems.
Iggly · 10/03/2022 09:36

@narcdad

I think as a small island we have limited resources, we can't keep taking people in, it's barbaric what's happening but the U.K can't save the world.
The UK isn’t the only country with limited resources Hmm

The problem in this country isn’t people coming here for safety. The problem is we have billionaires hoarding so much wealth, that there’s less for everyone else.

A few refugees is not the problem here.

@LondonWolf

And as ever I do wonder, if we are such a racist, mean spirited, backward nation, just why so MANY immigrants want to come here in preference to so many other countries they could get to more easily?
Absolutely!
x2boys · 10/03/2022 09:37

Also in January,when Boris was in the Ukraine for peace talks ,people on here were too busy arguing about "party gate " to care much about the worsening situation.

Iggly · 10/03/2022 09:38

And it isn’t that many. Honestly.

All those pictures you obviously rage over, found in the daily mail or on Nigel Farage’s Twitter feed…. Of boats coming over?

Are because this Home Secretary has closed the other safe routes into the UK. She’s even tried to make it illegal to claim asylum.

It’s funny how people have just lapped up the rhetoric about greedy asylum seekers - probably because it chimes with their inherent racism.

Yes, it emphasises that many came before them and live here happily and peacefully, so much so that they recommend others come too.
PenStation · 10/03/2022 09:41

What @Iggly said. It’s almost as though some people don’t want to understand. They just want their racism validated by others.

LondonWolf · 10/03/2022 09:42

Why did you post in that odd way? Makes you look unhinged.

LaBrujaPiruja · 10/03/2022 09:43

Many refugees turned down in Calais are the wives and children and the mothers and siblings of UK citizens and residents. It is embarrassing. They want to come here because it is where they have family.

Zillamop · 10/03/2022 09:43

That is a nice fantasy but completely unrealistic and naive. Would you really be happy if Putin or Xi Jinping rocked up and introduced himself as your new next door neighbour, or a dictator took over leadership of the entire world rather than one country (which is one country too many, of course)? Whose laws would become paramount? US law, Chinese, or perhaps Sharia 'law'? Are the individual histories, cultures, traditions and heritage of each country to be disposed of in a communist fashion?

What racism? I love immigration. I think it's valuable and essential. I work for the NHS. I know exactly how valuable and needed immigrants are to this country and its economy. Stop your lazy attempts to racialise and shame those offering alternative opinions. It's disgusting behaviour.

Do you understand the difference between immigrants and refugees? This thread is about refugees, not immigrants.

I immigrated to the UK because there were lots of jobs.

Just trying to get it across in a really basic way, because people seem to be struggling here

Yes, it emphasises that many came before them and live here happily and peacefully, so much so that they recommend others come too

How dare people want prosperity and safety. How dare people put down roots in other countries.

Or should it remain “pure” and god forbid we want people here who weren’t born here…

TebayOrNotTebay · 10/03/2022 09:46

I am ashamed of our repulsive government and yes we will be judged by their actions.

3peassuit · 10/03/2022 09:46

Ireland has taken in 2500 refugees and we’ve just managed 150. It’s shameful.

What a leap from now borders to “being taken over by a dictator”.

No wonder you’re scared.

LondonWolf · 10/03/2022 09:47

Read my previous post and stop your disgusting attempts to shut down any opinion that doesn't meet your own as racist. Shameful really and yet seemingly so acceptable because so many are comfortable doing it.

PenStation · 10/03/2022 09:48

What part of Iggly’s post did you not understand then? It’s really quite simple! Do you normally lack empathy and are unable to employ critical thinking?

worriedatthistime · 10/03/2022 09:48

@LondonWolf its a common theme on here just anti goverment people who will use any situation to bring up torys or brexit
They always use the words scum etc but then say they believe in freedom of choice but its seems only if you think as them
I agree that on the refugee front we need to step up but can also see on other things we have been better than many other countries
Instead of moaning on here , wrote to your mp do what else you can
And all this ashamed to be british , when I see all the local collections bursting at the seams and fundraising going on that actually makes me proud and shows that most of us are alright
And I don't vote Tory either

Blackbird2020 · 10/03/2022 09:48

@Iggly

Absolutely agree with you.

Ultimately it’s the language. English is the most widely taught language in the world. It is the lingua franca…. If I had to start my life again in another country and I could choose, I’d go to a country where I could at least communicate on a basic level. Not a country where I would have literally no idea what the person at the till was asking me, not be able to fill in a basic form, not be able to work to earn a basic living because no one would employ me as I didn’t speak a word of the local language.

This doesn’t excuse the handling of refugees by the U.K. government, it just shows the enormous pull to English speaking countries that exists in the world.

I did and now I’m even more confused.

What’s wrong with welcoming people - especially those who have links here - and helping them to rebuild their lives?

You like immigration but don’t like people being able to claim asylum? Do you effectively value someone based on their economic worth? (Although you don’t know the economic worth of an asylum seeker, you’re just assuming they’re worthless).

It comes across racist because there’s no logic to your statements.

Now the insults Grin so predictable. Agree with me or your racist/thick blah blah blah. There's a thread running right now about this, how there can be no discussion, no opposing viewpoint without insults and abuse. There is nothing I posted that could point to me being racist but I have repeatedly been called this because I won't toe the very narrow line. And you all think you're the good inclusive people I bet.

Refugees predominantly want refuge. If they had a choice they overwhelmingly want to live in outward-looking, open-minded London or other similar cities. They don't want to live in [***]!
