To think history will judge the U.K. over ukraine

Letshaveablackcelebration · 10/03/2022 07:01

I am so ashamed at how the U.K. is the only country in Europe effectively closing its doors to Ukrainian refugees. These are mostly women and children fleeing a country that has collapsed in the space of 2 weeks. A maternity hospital was bombed yesterday.

The rest of Europe is opening its arms and helping in every way it can but the U.K. had pretty much slammed the door, made it as difficult as possible to come. The U.K. signed the refugee convention in the 50’s that said that people fleeing war don’t need tons of paperwork and yet that’s exactly what they are asking people for.

I feel so embarrassed when everyone else is helping that we are doing nothing- we are an outlier in Europe.

I hate what this country has become under this disgusting government. I see so many posts on social media or brits wanting to do more.

I don't think the UK will be judged, the government will be and is being though.
My judgement is that they are a bunch of heartless arseholes who don't know the difference between migrants and refugees.
They are behaving shamefully and have massively misrepresented the UK people and shamed themselves as individuals.
They are fucking despicable.
Thats just my judgement, I'm sure others have their own views.

FindingMeno · 10/03/2022 07:46

I dream of a world with no borders.

DetailMouse · 10/03/2022 07:47

Thr British people have made it clear over and over again that they don't want refugees here, to the point that they're prepared to see them drown.

The people have got what they asked for, that's where the disgrace is.

I am also increasingly uncomfortable about why these refugees are so different

HRTQueen · 10/03/2022 07:49

It’s shameful and I hope things change

But no there are far bigger issues history shall judge Putin, NATO and the west for turning a blind eye to Putin money being washed, relying on Russia for their gas supply, Russia makes threats and the most powerful countries turn a blind eye

The invasion should not have come as such a shock if the people of Ukrainian had been listen to this may have been avoided but many countries didn’t listen so here we are

raspberryjamchicken · 10/03/2022 07:50

The pictures of elderly people and young children queuing in the freezing cold outside visa centres because they haven't managed to book an appointment while fleeing an actual war is disgusting.

Caroline Nokes, a Tory MP and former immigration minister was on the radio yesterday basically agreeing that it was a shit show and heavily criticising the Home Office.

x2boys · 10/03/2022 07:52

I mean there is a crazy man in Russia determined to carry on with this war and threatening everyother country ,but somehow it's the UK fault 🤔
Have you somehow managed to link it to Brexit yet Op
Mumsnet is ridiculous sometimes

Calandor · 10/03/2022 07:53

History judges us for everything. The UK has done a lot of evil things. We're very much already hated by lots of people in the world.

Prescottdanni123 · 10/03/2022 07:54

I'm not disputing that UK should be doing more, but who is directing the refugees to Calais? Why aren't there more efforts to divert them to Paris first? Far from ideal, I know, but at least it would stop people getting to Calais only to be told that they have to go elsewhere for a visa.

Calandor · 10/03/2022 07:54

We should take all the unloved in Russian millionaire mansions in London and put up Ukrainians in them 😂 Might sort the housing market out a bit.

THisbackwithavengeance · 10/03/2022 07:55

"Angry and ashamed". Get a grip. Yes, it's obviously the UK's fault that Putin has invaded Ukraine.

I used to work with refugees; the UK accepts plenty. You need to come off social media.

There is a process which needs to be followed. Technically, refugees should stay in the first safe country they enter, not pick and choose. That's a European policy, by the way not a UK policy. If you allow an undocumented and unprocessed free for all, you will get thousands of people claiming to be Ukrainian just to get in.

Some people on here are so full of bile and resentment because their political party of choice didn't get elected, they will never agree with anything the Government does on the principle of it. It's ridiculous.

veevee04 · 10/03/2022 07:55

I remember when the last migration crisis happened and the UK wanted nothing to do with it, when Europe opened their doors. As long as we can verify refugees are Ukrainian and we take in according to population density and operate a quota system with other European I have no problem. Aid should be given to poorer countries who are taking in lots of refugees.

I think the rest of the world outside of Mumsnet is rather more concerned about what Putin will do next ,rather than the UK .🙄
Calandor · 10/03/2022 07:58

@x2boys you'd be surprised. There's a LOT of anger from young people onTikTok towards the UK in this situation.

fmpc · 10/03/2022 08:00

And not only taking a minimal number, also not too happy about Ireland taking in refugees

AllOfUsAreDead · 10/03/2022 08:01

I wouldnt be so sure that even its citizens will judge the government for that long. I bet the tories get voted in again at the next election. Purely because 'but Labour is useless'. Yeah this lot are so useful...

I could bet as well that if we let loads of refugees in, people would be happy, for a while. Then the usual racism would set in eventually, annoyance that they are here spending our money would build up, and you would get the usual 'but they are taking our jobs!'.

The tories know their audience well. Why would they bother upsetting their brexit voters when this would eventually upset them?

Ah Tik Tok,I'm not sure people who post on Tik Tok have more than a tenous grasp on the realities of this situation.

Lesperance · 10/03/2022 08:14

I live in France and we are talking about this, but not a lot. It was on the news, people find it surprising.
The French government has set up a website where people can sign up to make a room available, or housing if they can. Lots of people are signing up.
So it's sad for those individual families who would prefer to go to the UK, because they know people there or perhaps speak good English, but they can stay in France and there are lots of resources being directed to helping them.

Cottonfrenzie · 10/03/2022 08:15

But those on MN do? Young people are interested in what is going on and many are well researched. Don't dismiss their views.

Lesperance · 10/03/2022 08:15

surprising that the UK is not more organised, that is.
