To think Zelenskyy needs to stop demanding a no fly zone

WilsonMilson · 08/03/2022 13:33

The war is awful, it’s heartbreaking to see what is happening in Ukraine. Zelenskyy has been exceptionally brave, but his current rhetoric that ‘until a no fly zone is put in place that every death is on NATO’ is reckless.

A no fly zone means WW3. No one wins then, the whole world burns. He needs to stop blaming us for not getting into what would undoubtedly be a nuclear war with Russia. It is a terrible situation, but implementing a no fly zone would be crazy.

Yes they have provided weapons but the negotiations on planes are ongoing

riceuten · 08/03/2022 18:55

It's OK for him to ask for it - I would in his shoes.

The reality is that, all things considered, the consequences for Poland, the UK, the US if they did enforce this would be considerable.

@incognitoforthisone

Zelenskyy is a world leader whose country and people are being obliterated by an appalling, corrupt and quasi-fascist regime. If the Russians reach Kyiv he will almost certainly be murdered. His job is to ask for whatever might save Ukraine, in as vocal and persistent manner as possible, even if he knows it's unlikely to happen.

You, in contrast, are a random person sitting at a computer on a website where people argue about whether you should wear pyjamas in the day time and which type of soap is more hygienic and why their best friend has fallen out with them.

I don't think you're really in a position to be pontificating on what Zelenskyy should or shouldn't be asking for, are you? Perhaps come back when you've been the leader of a country on the brink of a genocide.

Well said.........and eloquently expressed.
HappyDays40 · 08/03/2022 18:59

I think I would be begging for a no fly zone too. Why should he not he is trying to get help for his home and country.

pucelleauxblanchesmains · 08/03/2022 18:59

@abitbesotted Well, depending on what exactly he plans to do with Ukraine it could come under cultural genocide (forced assimilation).

Boxowine · 08/03/2022 19:03

Zelensky is the reckless one here? That’s an interesting take.

TheKeatingFive · 08/03/2022 19:04

I'd be doing the same. Why the fuck anyone thinks he should be taking one for the team is beyond me. He has much more to worry about than our delicate feeling.

Dasher789 · 08/03/2022 19:08

It's only a matter of time before Putin encroaches a nato border. I don't think his request is too much. Kids are literally being shot in the street less than a 3 hour flight away from us, they are desperate.

beautifulsay · 08/03/2022 19:12

Does everyone who wants a no fly zone, want to have WW3 happen ?

It's not a good idea at all for us to get any more involved than we already are.

Unless you want to be at war / nuked.

TooBigForMyBoots · 08/03/2022 19:13

For those who think Putin will stop at Ukraine, he has already said there would be military consequences for Finland and Sweden if they apply to NATO.

cushioncovers · 08/03/2022 19:17

Of course he should keep asking. I do understand why we aren't doing it.
Still feels fucking awful to sit and watch a man plead for help and the country get bombed into nothing whilst we sit on our hands.

TurkeyRoastvBubbleandSqueek · 08/03/2022 19:17

I am 99.49% believe that I am willing to be vaporised if it could save Ukrainian lives.

I am 100% sure that I am not willing for my Children's and my Grandchildren's lives to be vaporised to save anyone else's lives.

1 am also 100% sure that in the case of a nuclear war only a small majority of the World's population would be vaporised, most would not be in the epicentre so would not die immediately. A great many people would die from terrible injuries, and there would be no hospitals or doctors to even give most of them painkillers, or even a hand to hold. The majority of the rest will either die, or suffer greatly from radiation poisoning, which could take months or years to happen, but those people who do fall ill will not have any anti-sickness tablets to take, will not have any antibiotics or antivirals to help cure whatever else will befall them.

TheKeatingFive · 08/03/2022 19:18

Do you think he's going to stop at Ukraine? Seriously?

bellinisurge · 08/03/2022 19:24

"It's only a matter of time before Putin encroaches a nato border. I don't think his request is too much. "

We can't do anything militarily unless/until he encroaches on a NATO border. It is that simple.

Flapjacker48 · 08/03/2022 19:27

Most of the civilian casualties are coming from ground based rocket and artillery assets. No way is NATO going to send planes to destroy Russian ground equipment and troops, you really would be looking at huge escalation in the situation.

luxxlisbon · 08/03/2022 19:28

Why would he stop asking though? Surely it’s completely reasonable that he is attempting to do everything in his power to protect his country and the people he represents?

It is also reasonable why NATO would say no, but I don’t think he should stop asking.

Before Russia invaded Zelensky's approval rating was about 30% partly because of the way he has not been dealing with the war in Ukraine.
A Ukrainian asked on one of my friends Zelensky meme's to stop making him a hero as he had made mistakes and she was sitting in her living room in Ukraine not evacuating so what was the difference between her and him. Which was interesting.

That random person you are criticizing maybe one of the ones I see on money forums who can't afford to buy oil = can't afford to have hot water as it has trebled in price. That was before todays' announcement that we are banning Russian oil. That person may also be really worried Zelensky will pull us into the war which isn't wise.

Of course he will stop at Ukraine. Russia and Ukraine have been at it for the last 8 years. All we have been hearing is his army is crap and he won't be able to hold Ukraine. So assuming that is not Western propaganda why on earth would we join in to provoke him and give him justification (in his head) to push his little red button. Lunacy.
Hillary17 · 08/03/2022 19:39

We’re already in WW3. People just don’t want to admit it.

TheKeatingFive · 08/03/2022 19:41

All we have been hearing is his army is crap and he won't be able to hold Ukraine.

That's very naive. But I guess you'll believe it to make yourself feel better.

He has no choice but to stop at Ukraine.

His army is in disarray, he's bankrupting his county, he won't able to pay for a new war.

forinborin · 08/03/2022 19:49

They need to maybe think about agreeing to certain parts of Ukraine, specifically the Russian speaking parts, as being recognised as Russian? Not great obviously but neither is millions of displaced people and a country in ruins.
How about recognising English-speaking parts of Ireland as English? Would make total sense, right?

mumwon · 08/03/2022 19:50

@ChardonnaysPetDragon some of this already has happened & Putin has "allowed" people to use "escape routes" to Russia/Belorussia (& remember Belorussia has a puppet leader ia was NOT voted in & whose opposition leader ...
www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/mar/08/russia-ukraine-war-possible-trajectories
The Ukrainians are fighting tooth & claw because they know what will happen to them & they are begging for help. Most refugees are women & children - many will become widows or wives of injured men - how many will be allowed back if Ukraine loses? Would it be in Russia's interest to let them back home?

WTF475878237NC · 08/03/2022 19:52

I see your point from your update OP but personally I think this could well be the start of WW3. I think we all have a duty to help Ukraine and no one nation should be sacrificed in the pursuit of appeasing Putin.
