To be so angry with our government treatment of refugees.

First Syria
Then Afganistan
Now Ukraine
They see a crisis and put every barrier they can get away with to keep people out.
The first two they pretended 'ooh security ' so many young men, they're all Islamist terrorists.
Well what's their excuse now? This lot are all women and children.
I suspect the truth is this plays well with their bluekip 'they're not coming here' base, that's why they do it.
I'm not even going to bother writing to my Leave supporting Tory MP about this one. No fucking point. I'll just get the Tory HQ lies back about how we're doing more than any other country for refugees (actually heard Johnson say that on the radio yesterday).
I'm ashamed to be British.

Plus where is the money coming from?harsh reality we can't afford it can't even afford to buy our own fuel to keep our taxpayers healthy and alive

Porcupineintherough · 08/03/2022 21:50

@Samcro my friend is struggling to get a visa for his wife and child. If they manage to get them they will move in with his father (and if they couldn't do that they could move in with us, or with one of half a dozen friends). They dont need emergency housing or "infrastructure " or tax payer funding, just the paperwork .

As I pointed out upthread, we are one of the wealthiest countries in the world. 85% of refugees are taken in by developing nations and 27% of the world's refugees are hosted by the poorest countries in the world. If countries with vastly fewer resources than the UK can manage.woth far higher numbers of refugees why is it such an issue here? Or is it just a feeble excuse for people who don't want foreigners coming here?
Porcupineintherough · 08/03/2022 21:53

@Theunamedcat we are one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Certainly more so than Moldova and Romania and Slovakia and all the other countries that are currently being left to cope.
@Clavinova I'm very proud to be Irish. I think it's great we have great journalists like fintan o toile ready to call out the government. Are you British? If so, are you proud of your country? I wonder are there any Brots out there who can genuinely say that are not ashamed of their country anymore. It's a shame.
Here here !🙂 Were not perfect but the difference is us ordinary Irish people , well we dont take any old shit thats thrown at us . Were not afraid to unite and fight when our own government or anyone else's is doing us wrong .
A small country with with a voice thats heard and respected across the world need I say more.
As an Irish person I am always profoundly proud of of my nationality amongest many many other things .

Mocara · 08/03/2022 22:12

@Clavinova

RoastedFerret Quite what racism in the workplace in Ireland has to do with the UKs treatment of Ukrainian refugees

Relevant to comments such as;

There is a completely different culture in ireland. The suspicion of people from other countries that you have in Britain doesn't get much traction here...

Grasping a straws much 🤣🤣🤣
Mocara · 08/03/2022 22:15
In usual cases Ireland takes in 2% of the refugees that go to the EU these quotas are set by the EU.

Not so good in 2016 -

For a country that once boasted the '100,000 welcomes' to visitors, Ireland has become the least welcoming country in western Europe for refugees.

Latest figures from the EU agency, Eurostat, shows Ireland at the bottom of the league for accepting refugees.

What do you suggest then? People are left to die? This is a genuine question. We keep being told that we're the 5th or 6th richest country in the world. If it's about money, are you saying only the top four are wealthy enough. The burden of refugees is actually shouldered by the poorest countries in the world, are they just better people than us?

And as for not being able to afford to keep our own population healthy and warm, yes we can, it's a political choice not to. For some reason we keep voting to keep people in real poverty though. I don't know why we chose such a path.

silentpool · 08/03/2022 22:31

The Govt needs to put in long term planning for social housing and infrastructure of all kinds.

Every time something like this happens, it's apparent that there is nowhere to put refugees. Not to mention the huge backlog of people in Britain already needing housing. Emotionally we want to help them but practically? The place is not equipped to do so.

Try getting a place at a GP or NHS dentist in some areas, let alone reasonably priced housing or a school place. It all comes down the practicalities in the end. If they come, they need to be looked after.

And as for those lauding Ireland - it's even worse with regards to housing etc.

Mocara · 08/03/2022 22:43

BeckySharpish Also oh cut and paste queen @ Clavinova here's a cut n paste for you. ireland is the Goodest country in the world. I know because I saw it on a Ted talk.

Not-so-good Ireland drops to 15th place in global index.

The UK appears to be 8th -

www.goodcountry.org/
index.goodcountry.org/

the UK deserves to be bashed. Don't you see that? People around the world and about 50% of the population of the UK itself as far as I can see are disgusted with the carry on by the disgraceful lying cheating corrupt thick government you have there. Get rid of them. Have higher standards. Don't give platforms to corrupt self serving people. Ask more of your public servants. Get off your fucking knees bowing and scraping to queens and public school wankers. Jesus. Do you realise the reputation so damage the UK has suffered over the last few years making and breaking agreements, lying & colluding with corrupt people?

Are you sure you've got the right temperament to host two refugees you've never met before? What if they have views you disagree with - are you going to shout and swear at them? I would want someone hosting my relatives to go through the official Irish Red Cross vetting/matching service. They would advise you about some of the potential downsides of hosting as well.

As for the disgraceful lying cheating corrupt thick government you have there -

Embassy of Ukraine to the UK
Today @ VPrystaiko had a meeting with the true friend of Ukraine @ LizTruss. UK stands shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine. Ukrainians feel that and stand firm against Putin, who will definitely fail. Agreed to work tirelessly to provide UA with humanitarian, military help.

If your representitive of British people and there views there is truely no hope for your country . You are utterly vile.
Mocara · 08/03/2022 22:52

@isadoradancing123

Dont worry, Ireland are taking many thousands they can nip to the north and get a ferry to here no questions asked
I wouldnt worry about that , if Ukranians fled there own country because of war there hardly going to head straight to another occupied territory and risk getting shot by the british as an ilegal refugee or a terrorist ! As back up though you always have Boris's border in the Irish sea , you know the one he promised his terrorist buddies he would never put there 😂
Krabapple · 08/03/2022 22:58

Disgraceful relies on here make me ashamed to be British. Am most watching Newsnight interviewing Polish families who have taken in Ukrainians without question.
Do any of the people morning about lack of infrastructure realise there are huge gaps in workers in nearly all industries due to Brexit amongst other things?

Theunamedcat · 09/03/2022 00:01

People are left to die in this country all the time

It might be a rich country but all the money is held by very few people and they don't share

StarbucksSmarterSister · 09/03/2022 00:28

Suggest you read the diary of Anne Frank, this government would have absolutely 100% put up every barrier they could to lock the doors on her

Yep. We made it very difficult.
Even Kindertransport kids didn't get in for free. £50 then = almost £3,500 today. This is on top of a sponsor to feed, clothe and house them.

To be so angry with our government treatment of refugees.
StarbucksSmarterSister · 09/03/2022 00:31

Vile as it would be, I'd rather they admitted they don't want anyone to come instead of spouting all the lies about what they're allegedly doing.

I heard Priti speaking in the House of Commons earlier. Every time she said anything about setting up new centres to speed up visa processing, she interspersed it with how there absolutely would not be a visa centre at Calais because we must prevent THE SURGE. It was like Conservative Home had sat her down before and said she must reassure the Brexit voters there would be no SURGE. IAt least she avoided the term "swarm" I suppose.
beguilingeyes · 09/03/2022 07:14

This government disgusts me. I didn't think anything could be worse than Thatcher. But this lot? They're evil. The fact that Lebedev is in the House of Lords still mystifies me.

Oh I can confirm Clav is very real. Here to cut and paste furiously in defence of ... well whoever is paying them I guess. This is the sort of person that walks amongst us in Britain.

This too. No one gives a shit about all the homeless and the very poor here. Why would they care about other countries homeless and poor?

Interestingly, the bloke from Conservative Home, can’t recall his name, was on the BBC politics live programme today. Was calling out our efforts as woeful
and urging for much more to be done, quickly. Militarily too.

People whose families were given refuge then pulled the ladder up after them are disgusting. Don’t know how that woman sleeps at night.
