First Syria
Then Afganistan
Now Ukraine
They see a crisis and put every barrier they can get away with to keep people out.
The first two they pretended 'ooh security ' so many young men, they're all Islamist terrorists.
Well what's their excuse now? This lot are all women and children.
I suspect the truth is this plays well with their bluekip 'they're not coming here' base, that's why they do it.
I'm not even going to bother writing to my Leave supporting Tory MP about this one. No fucking point. I'll just get the Tory HQ lies back about how we're doing more than any other country for refugees (actually heard Johnson say that on the radio yesterday).
I'm ashamed to be British.

@Satsumaeater

perhaps you're aware of hundreds of empty properties just waiting for the refugees to arrive

we have at least half a million empty properties. I know some of them won't be habitable but many will be, and even if they are not perfect, better an imperfect place to live where you are safe and secure, rather than somewhere which is being bombed every night.

In any event, a lot of the people wanting to come here, have family here, so they have somewhere to stay.

Also, there are well over a million second homes in the UK. Not rented - second or holiday homes. Some of them could be used for refugees.

I agree we need more infrastructure. But many of the people escaping Ukraine are probably skilled people with good English language skills and could no doubt contribute to our society - for example if they are medically trained or teachers.

This. Also a lot of very big mansions in London currently standing empty.

@Yants

If our government are treating refugees and other migrants so appallingly what has been motivating 300,000 of them a year of to travel across multiple peaceful countries to reach the UK?

-They thought they would have a better time and mistakenly came here thinking this would be ok?
-English speaking?
-relatives or diasporas (familiarity)

Georgeskitchen · 08/03/2022 18:05

Yoi do realise don't you that we are accepting refugees. They have sent extra staff to process visas but that doesn't happen overnight.

AllOfUsAreDead · 08/03/2022 18:06

Op is right though. Literally every person in britain could write to their mp and say they are outraged and want Britain to take in more people. And you know what will happen? Nothing. Because the non tories can't do anything at all about it anyway, and the tories know that British people are suckers to them and they will get voted in again next time regardless.

So complaining will do nothing. Politicians don't care about our opinions. They know exactly how to confuse and lie to get votes. And they'll always be right and we will still have the tories in next time despite our 'outrage' with them right now.

But oh well, least its not labour right? Hmm

Maybe they should head for Dunkirk ?

The point a lot of us are making is that it should happen a lot faster. Overnight would be good.

Also oh cut and paste queen @ Clavinova here's a cut n paste for you. ireland is the Goodest country in the world. I know because I saw it on a Ted talk.

Your link is from 2014.

Not-so-good Ireland drops to 15th place in global index.

The UK appears to be 8th -

the UK deserves to be bashed. Don't you see that? People around the world and about 50% of the population of the UK itself as far as I can see are disgusted with the carry on by the disgraceful lying cheating corrupt thick government you have there. Get rid of them. Have higher standards. Don't give platforms to corrupt self serving people. Ask more of your public servants. Get off your fucking knees bowing and scraping to queens and public school wankers. Jesus. Do you realise the reputation so damage the UK has suffered over the last few years making and breaking agreements, lying & colluding with corrupt people?

Are you sure you've got the right temperament to host two refugees you've never met before? What if they have views you disagree with - are you going to shout and swear at them? I would want someone hosting my relatives to go through the official Irish Red Cross vetting/matching service. They would advise you about some of the potential downsides of hosting as well.

As for the disgraceful lying cheating corrupt thick government you have there -

Embassy of Ukraine to the UK
Today @ VPrystaiko had a meeting with the true friend of Ukraine @ LizTruss. UK stands shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine. Ukrainians feel that and stand firm against Putin, who will definitely fail. Agreed to work tirelessly to provide UA with humanitarian, military help.

Must be hundreds owned by wealthy Russians. Requisition the empty ones.

Darbs76 · 08/03/2022 19:26

These things do take time to set up. As with any government department there’s a lot of red tape. You can’t start letting people into the country without the basic security checks no matter what, if we then get blown up by one of them who will take the blame? Sadly there’s every risk of someone coming through who is wanting to come for different reasons. Some of these refugees have their documents left in visa processing centres that have been closed down due to the war, that all takes time. The government doesn’t have a pool of staff sitting spare ready to process these. Of course they take people off non priority work but people can’t just start doing a job without training. Don’t think that a lot of people are not working night and day to facilitate all this because I can assure you they are. No things aren’t perfect, perhaps if funding hadn’t been cut to many government departments over the years they wouldn’t be in a situation of too few staff.

If you don’t understand the process I don’t think you’ve got a right to say they aren’t doing all they can when you have no idea

Darbs76 · 08/03/2022 19:27

By all means write to your MP but the same organisation trying to pull people off to process will be trying to reply to these emails too.

isadoradancing123 · 08/03/2022 19:30

Dont worry, Ireland are taking many thousands they can nip to the north and get a ferry to here no questions asked

Darbs76 · 08/03/2022 19:31

@Tigofigo - the scheme has started and people are already in the U.K. as part of the scheme

Clavinova · 08/03/2022 19:34

POLITICO MARCH 8
U.K. MINISTER: FALSE UKRAINIAN REFUGEES SHOWING UP AT CALAIS

Kevin Foster, a U.K. Home Office minister, has told the House of Commons that the government “will not take chances with the security” of Britain, when pressed to speed up the issuing of visas to refugees fleeing Ukraine. He said there are “people presenting at Calais with false documents claiming to be Ukrainian” and “making claims that are not true.”

“Our friends in the United States, Canada and Australia are rightly taking the same approach,” Foster said. He added that the new visa application center being established in Lille will be up and running on Wednesday and that the government is considering transport options to link it up with Calais, where many refugees were arriving.

Because your average Ukrainian teacher or software developer has always dreamt of becoming an illegal immigrant in the UK, living off cash in hand jobs.
raspberryjamchicken · 08/03/2022 20:37

Lucky they managed to set things up a bit more quickly on the Polish/Romanian/Moldovan borders or nobody would have been able to get out.

Howyiz · 08/03/2022 20:56

"I'm ashamed to be British" .
And so you should be. The entire world is watching what a bunch of absolute assholes we are.

RoastedFerret · 08/03/2022 21:04

Yup children are being murdered and dying alone of dehydration but the UK,US,Canada and Aus have the right idea. Why didn't Poland etc demand the right forms be filled in first? Silly people have they not heard of national security?

Mocara · 08/03/2022 21:22

British government /Priiti Patel have stated that Irelands open door (open arms)policy to Ukrainian refugees causes a security risk to the uk !!!
In short Ireland have said they will share refugee details within data protection laws but as for changing there policy the Priti Patel can get stuffed !
There are no words for the inhumane government policies towards all refugees.

Mocara · 08/03/2022 21:32

@BeckySharpish

The British Government is disgraceful and the replies on this thread show how many British people think the way Britain is being governed is fine. The reputation of Britain is in the toilet. Ireland is taking thousands of Ukrainian refugees. They will be given a social security number a social worker if needed and a school place, and their visa requirements have been waived because they are being bombed to shit and it is nearly all women and children. I’m taking 2 young women, my sister two women and an 11 year old, my friend 1 women with her 2 children. The Irish refugee council is getting people out although it’s lagging behind what ordinary Irish citizens are doing - paying for Ryanair flights from Warsaw or krakow and welcoming people in to their homes. The people who have arrived so far have small backpacks, suitcases had to be ditched due to no space on trains. They have left husbands and sons and fathers behind. It’s utterly heartbreaking and British people who say there isn’t space are selfish cunts. We have a housing crisis here but people are finding space.
I couldnt have put it better myself thank you. Talk about Russian propaganda !! Some people in the uk need to look at more international coverage of world politics to gain a realist perspective on whats happening in the world and realise how distorted and narrow there veiws are towards others.
Porcupineintherough · 08/03/2022 21:37

Weird that Britain has so little infrastructure that it cant manage to receive more than a couple of hundred Ukrainians yet Poland has the infrastructure for 800,000. Hmm

Mocara · 08/03/2022 21:39

@tara66

I do support allowing immigration of refugees from Ukraine on humanitarian grounds but I read that they have a high level of TB in their population which concerns me. Apparently it is going to spread with them unfortunately.
There simply are no words, vile doesnt come close. Crawl back under your rock please
raspberryjamchicken · 08/03/2022 21:40

UK visa centre in Poland no longer accepting walk-ins and making elderly people and young children queue for hours in sub-zero temperatures even though there is plenty of space inside the building.

Mocara · 08/03/2022 21:46

@Samcro

i think we should take more.....BUT where are they going to live? pretend otherwise but we have a shortage of SH and people from Afganistan are still in hotels.
Irish governmrnt planning modular cabins on state land in the first instance . Its not rocket sience !
Theunamedcat · 08/03/2022 21:47

So are we supposed to commandeer second homes holiday let's and mansions to house people now? A lot of the "spare properties" in my Town are shops owned by "foreign investers" I wouldn't house a dead pig in them they are unsuitable for the rats leaking roof no heat water dangerous electric yes they could be converted but we don't OWN them and CPOs take years
