To be so angry with our government treatment of refugees.

First Syria
Then Afganistan
Now Ukraine
They see a crisis and put every barrier they can get away with to keep people out.
The first two they pretended 'ooh security ' so many young men, they're all Islamist terrorists.
Well what's their excuse now? This lot are all women and children.
I suspect the truth is this plays well with their bluekip 'they're not coming here' base, that's why they do it.
I'm not even going to bother writing to my Leave supporting Tory MP about this one. No fucking point. I'll just get the Tory HQ lies back about how we're doing more than any other country for refugees (actually heard Johnson say that on the radio yesterday).
I'm ashamed to be British.

OP posts:
Mamamia7962 · 08/03/2022 10:01

Beckysharpish - That's a lovely thing to do if you have the space, but many people are already living in overcrowded conditions so shouldn't be made to feel guilty if they are unable to do the same.

BeckySharpish · 08/03/2022 10:03

There are plenty of people who do have space in Britain though but why the guck aren’t people up in arms about your own crappy corrupt government. Britain is fucked.

BeckySharpish · 08/03/2022 10:05

I would be utterly ashamed to be British right now. I feel bad for you OP and I salute you for making this thread even tho you have been accused of being boring. Wow. Some really selfish myopic people out there.

TebayOrNotTebay · 08/03/2022 10:08

This is what people voted for, sadly. Disgraceful, and made worse by the shameless attempt to pretend that British govt is "leading the way" on refugees.

HereComesSpringAgain · 08/03/2022 10:09

We have room but dp isn't on board

His reasoning is we have family In Europe and he predicts it will get worse so we need the space should they need to flee! God forbid!

Tigofigo · 08/03/2022 10:14

@Crankley

How many refugees have you taken into your home in the past OP, and how many Ukranian refugees are you planning on housing? Or perhaps you're aware of hundreds of empty properties just waiting for the refugees to arrive?
There are thousands of empty properties in the UK. 600,000 last time I checked.

The govt promised to take 5000 afghan refugees too, they've not even started the programme. Meanwhile families there are starving, selling their children as slaves so their other children can eat, no education, huge regression in women's rights.

But oh yeah we have to wait a bit for a GP appointment and some schools are oversubscribed so better not welcome them

beguilingeyes · 08/03/2022 10:14

As Tony Benn said, the way the government treats refugees is the way they would treat all of us if they could get away with it.

It is shameful. A man on the news last night in Calais. British resident who's trying to get his wife over. So he already has a home and a job. Been told to go to Paris. This government is disgusting.

RoastedFerret · 08/03/2022 10:15

I dont know why people are being snarky to the OP. 300 refugees from Ukraine so far vs 30000 in Germany for example. Even Ireland that has a population of about 2/3rds of London has taken in 1800 so far with the expectation that many more are to follow.

MurmuratingStarling · 08/03/2022 10:16

@girlmom21

I agree that you can't really complain if you're not even willing to write to your MP. They are literally your gateway to the central government.

Them voting leave doesn't mean they are horrible monsters, you know.

This. ^ People like the OP love to gripe about how dreadful the government are, but she will do nothing about it.

I suppose at least she isn't moaning about us all being racist for (allegedly) preferring Ukraine people to people from Syria/Afghanistan like a few posters on a couple of other threads (that I have now hidden because they were infuriating.) That's something to be grateful for. Wink

I guess there's still time though.........

Get out of bed the wrong side today did you @Kendodd ?? I agree with a previous poster, if you are as upset about this as your furious posts suggest, then take in a homeless person tonight, register to work in a food bank, register to be a foster carer... AND start an online petition - under your own REAL name, for more to be done for the refugees, and publicise it on Twitter.

I also don't believe for a fleeting moment, that the OP, or anyone else on here would 'take in a refugee.' Like the OP, some people on here are all hot air and bluster.

DGRossetti · 08/03/2022 10:19

Was this the guy who has lived and worked in the UK for 30 years and is a British Citizen ?

No one can be surprised by this, surely ? The people that voted for it (and yes you fucking did) will obviously be happy with this state of affairs. Others (raises hand) who didn't are like the OP angry (I'm in regular correspondence with my MP for various reasons and we're on the same page on this).

But no one, no one at all should be surprised. Because that's really just saying "you know these past 20 years ? I haven't paid a blind bit of notice to what's going on."

BeckySharpish · 08/03/2022 10:20

@MurmuratingStarling you are wrong. I know lots of people who are taking refugees and no @Mamamia7962 it's not a LOVELY thing to do. I'm anxious about it. I wish people didn't need shelter because their city has been bombed to shit by putin but I can put myself in their shoes. What would you pack in your little backpack? Where would you go? Honestly it's unbelievable the way Britain has gone. What a wonderful leader you have in Boris. Inspirational.

RallySooney · 08/03/2022 10:21

@BeckySharpish

The British Government is disgraceful and the replies on this thread show how many British people think the way Britain is being governed is fine. The reputation of Britain is in the toilet. Ireland is taking thousands of Ukrainian refugees. They will be given a social security number a social worker if needed and a school place, and their visa requirements have been waived because they are being bombed to shit and it is nearly all women and children. I’m taking 2 young women, my sister two women and an 11 year old, my friend 1 women with her 2 children. The Irish refugee council is getting people out although it’s lagging behind what ordinary Irish citizens are doing - paying for Ryanair flights from Warsaw or krakow and welcoming people in to their homes. The people who have arrived so far have small backpacks, suitcases had to be ditched due to no space on trains. They have left husbands and sons and fathers behind. It’s utterly heartbreaking and British people who say there isn’t space are selfish cunts. We have a housing crisis here but people are finding space.
Completely agree, BeckySharpish

People in Britain really need to push their government on this. It's appalling. The lack of humanity is shameful.

forinborin · 08/03/2022 10:23

At the very least let in those ones who have immediate UK resident family willing to underwrite 100% of their living costs here, with no recourse to public funds.

A refugee would surely struggle in this country if just moved into a random property

What will we be providing in the way of financial support?

I ask because with utilities and food price hikes, I'd worry they would struggle to survive here! I know it's safety etc but to build a new life here. Our Ukrainian refugees will be mainly unable to work ( as lone mother and children, no childcare etc)

MurmuratingStarling · 08/03/2022 10:28

@HereComesSpringAgain

So your husband put his family before a bunch of people who he doesn't even know?! What a monster! Shock
HereComesSpringAgain · 08/03/2022 10:31

@BeckySharpish

I don't even own a backpack!

@MurmuratingStarling I gave our situation here nobody else is? Is anyone here on this thread taking in a refugee or is it all that new thing people talk about called 'virtue signalling'?

Are people doing anything other than contact mp's?

BeckySharpish · 08/03/2022 10:45

When a country is governed by a selfish corrupt liar it emboldens selfish corrupt liars and people who think other people are lying because they aren't as selfish nasty and morally bankrupt. Britain is going through the nastiest phase I have ever seen.

Clavinova · 08/03/2022 10:49

How do you know so soon who is coming to live with you? The Irish Red Cross carry out a vetting process (on you) and visit your home to assess its suitability.

Ireland were not so keen to take in many Afghan refugees last year;

Tigofigo
The govt promised to take 5000 afghan refugees too, they've not even started the programme.

DWP statement December 2021:

Of the 16,500 people airlifted from Afghanistan to the UK since August, “over 4,000 individuals have either moved into a settled home or are in the process of being moved or matched to a suitable home”, according to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

tara66 · 08/03/2022 10:53

I do support allowing immigration of refugees from Ukraine on humanitarian grounds but I read that they have a high level of TB in their population which concerns me. Apparently it is going to spread with them unfortunately.

EmpressCixi · 08/03/2022 10:55

@Satsumaeater
we have at least half a million empty properties

Doesn’t mean we can use them to house refugees. All these empty properties are privately owned by people with second holiday homes either for their use or to let out as holiday lets. The government cannot legally seize and use privately owned properties to house anyone- homeless citizen or refugee.

BeckySharpish · 08/03/2022 11:03

@Clavinova I have a Polish friend whose brother is linking people up from Krakow. Four people have arrived so far and three others (the group my sister is hosting) are on the way. The young women coming to stay with me are en route right now. One has landed in ireland the other is hopefully in Poland by now. I was only going to be hosting one young woman but was asked if her friend could share the room if she could get here. Her fiancee is a 28 yr old medical student staying to fight. Her dad is 60 staying to fight. One of them has been offered a waitressing job already through my friends. And I am scoping out work for the second woman now. Plenty of good leads. Everyone keen to help and asking what they can do. People who have no room are saying they will do a Tesco shop or buy toiletries or whatever. There is a completely different culture in ireland. The suspicion of people from other countries that you have in Britain doesn't get much traction here....isn't promoted by our press and government. So we aren't all slamming the doors shut on people in need.

beguilingeyes · 08/03/2022 11:05

A lot of the people who want UK visas have family here already who can support them. Elderly parents is just one example. They're not lone travellers. and we won't even let them in. These people are running for their lives FGS.

BeckySharpish · 08/03/2022 11:10

I have a friend in Manchester and a friend in London who are both prepared to take people in but the UK government won't give visas to Ukrainian refugees fleeing war. Why aren't you all more outraged? What has happened to Britain? Come on. Fucking help out.

AbleCable · 08/03/2022 11:12

If the Poland had the same policy as the UK, hundreds of thousands of women and children would be dead at the border. The report on the BBC from Calais last night was beyond disgusting.

For the people saying the UK has high prices and no infrastructure - where do you think would be better? What countries are not experiencing price hikes? Is not financially decimated after Covid?

Do you think Poland should take in the expected 3-4 million refugees? Just send over a few trucks of second-hand clothes and toys for the traumatised children? Or do you think the Ukrainian women and their children should stay in Ukraine and be bombed to bits?

The UK has issued just 300 visas so far - they've had 17,700 applications from Ukranians to join their own families.
