To be so angry with our government treatment of refugees.

First Syria
Then Afganistan
Now Ukraine
They see a crisis and put every barrier they can get away with to keep people out.
The first two they pretended 'ooh security ' so many young men, they're all Islamist terrorists.
Well what's their excuse now? This lot are all women and children.
I suspect the truth is this plays well with their bluekip 'they're not coming here' base, that's why they do it.
I'm not even going to bother writing to my Leave supporting Tory MP about this one. No fucking point. I'll just get the Tory HQ lies back about how we're doing more than any other country for refugees (actually heard Johnson say that on the radio yesterday).
I'm ashamed to be British.

OP posts:
BeckySharpish · 08/03/2022 13:23

@stupidandconcearned what's that got to do with xenophobia? My informed opinion of UK doesn't relate equate or anything else to xenophobia. You might want to check your understanding of the word

Clavinova · 08/03/2022 13:24

BeckySharpish
There is something seriously rotten in your country

I think it's pretty rotten that the Irish Government only wanted to accept 195 refugees from Afghanistan. And I am pretty certain that the UK will take in tens of thousands more refugees from Ukraine than Ireland.

What you seem to not be getting is that the OP feels ashamed to be British

The op is 'ashamed to be British' every other week - she tells us frequently.

Just spotted this in the Irish Times -

Fintan O’Toole: Putin and the oligarchs have found a home for their money in Dublin.

We point finger at London but Irish tax regime facilitates Putin and his oligarchs.

Between 2005 and 2017, more than €118 billion was funnelled from the Irish Financial Services Centre (IFSC) in Dublin to entities in Russia linked to the regime of Vladimir Putin and to companies controlled by Russian oligarchs.

RoastedFerret · 08/03/2022 13:26
@RoastedFerret so 17000 have applied so not put off by the red tape then, also how many have actually gone to another eu country yet other than the bordering countries ? We simply can't take in hundreds of thousands ( agree we need to take in more than we have though) and I bet many eu countries will end up taking hardly any due to language difficulties etc
They have applied but they haven't been granted visas so they can't actually enter the UK making an already shit situation more difficult for them. Apparently, over 180,000 have moved on from border countries to other European countries so far. Nobody is saying that the UK has to take in hundreds of thousands and there is no reason to believe that many would want to go to the UK in the first place rather than stay closer to home.

JingsMahBucket · 08/03/2022 13:31

@BeckySharpish I LOVE the cut of your jib and your fire! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Thank you so much for everything you’re doing! Some posters are angry at you because they don’t like the mirror you’re holding up to them. The more they argue, the more xenophobic and fascist they sound.

BeckySharpish · 08/03/2022 13:34

@Clavinova I'm very proud to be Irish. I think it's great we have great journalists like fintan o toile ready to call out the government. Are you British? If so, are you proud of your country? I wonder are there any Brots out there who can genuinely say that are not ashamed of their country anymore. It's a shame.

stupidandconcearned · 08/03/2022 13:35

@JingsMahBucket What because she is saying all British people should be ashamed? Yes thatss perfectly acceptable isn't it , unless we insert another country then that would be seen as not ok
Britain is made up of several countries as well

RoastedFerret · 08/03/2022 13:36

Well given your population is more than 10 times bigger than Ireland I would hope the Uk would take tens of thousands more Ukrainian people. In usual cases Ireland takes in 2% of the refugees that go to the EU these quotas are set by the EU. Given the UKs part in the wars in Afghanistan, I would again hope that they took in more refugees.

stupidandconcearned · 08/03/2022 13:36

@BeckySharpish yes i do And i consider you comment disgusting to basically slate all british people

stupidandconcearned · 08/03/2022 13:37

@RoastedFerret population may be but what about land size

stupidandconcearned · 08/03/2022 13:37

@RoastedFerret plenty of land to be built on and the eu also played a part of which we were all apart of then

BeckySharpish · 08/03/2022 13:38

@JingsMahBucket I'm on one today. I think I'll go and have a cup of chamomile tea. I have loads of English friends and relatives who I love. I just have watched in horror as the Britain of my youth had morphed horribly into an unrecognisable place

stupidandconcearned · 08/03/2022 13:39

@BeckySharpish yes i can say I am proud to be british because its made up of many millions of people and we don't all have a direct say in what is happening and i know many people doing lots for ukraine and other places on a day to day basis

stupidandconcearned · 08/03/2022 13:40

@BeckySharpish and do you tell your friends in real life they should all be ashamed , although noticed you have now changed to english rather than britisj

Clavinova · 08/03/2022 13:42

Are you British? If so, are you proud of your country?

Yes and Yes.

At least someone appreciates us - tweets yesterday:

Embassy of Ukraine to the UK
@ UkrEmbLondon We appreciate @ pritipatel to have visited @ UkrEmbLondon and met Ukrainian community so that to listened to people and their needs. We really feel that the UK cares and look forward to hearing of further steps.

Embassy of Ukraine to the UK
Today @ VPrystaiko had a meeting with the true friend of Ukraine @ LizTruss. UK stands shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine. Ukrainians feel that and stand firm against Putin, who will definitely fail. Agreed to work tirelessly to provide UA with humanitarian, military help.

@BeckySharpish take care of yourself and rest up. Be proud that you’re making a positive difference :)

Well we are talking about how we may end up hosting more than 100,000 Ukrainians here, that is more than the population of my nearest city. The government are also talking about building temporary accommodation for them too so I'm not sure they really need your suggestions.

Sorry, you can't compare Irelands role in Afghanistan with the UKs which dates back to when we were an occupied country by none other than the UK.

You can try and deflect but this thread isn't about Ireland, this thread is about the Uk and their pathetic response.

stupidandconcearned · 08/03/2022 13:44

@RoastedFerret just anti uk thread isn't it you have turned it totally around
Talk is cheap

bedheadedzombie · 08/03/2022 13:45

@OhMygodddd

It’s all well and good taking them in but the country doesn’t even have the infrastructure to support the citizens already here.
In what way is Polands infrastructure better equipped to take in so many refugees?
balalake · 08/03/2022 13:45

Please express your view via the ballot box in May where you have elections, even though they are not for MPs.

There is no defence to the slow processing of visa applications for those with family in the UK. Presumably capable people no longer work in senior positions in the Home Office because they don't want to work for a bully.

Clavinova · 08/03/2022 13:46

Ireland has one of the highest rates of racism in the workplace within the EU.

A Europe-wide report shows Ireland's rate for workplace racism is 33%, compared to an EU average of 22%.

The study involved all 28 of the EU's member states. Ireland ranked worst alongside Austria, Finland and Luxembourg.

The report looks in particular at the experiences of people from sub-Saharan Africa.

Author of the report Professor Michael O'Flaherty said the statistics might point to a problem with integration.

Heatherjayne1972 · 08/03/2022 13:48

I’m genuinely a bit confused
Didn’t half the country vote to keep ‘other’ people out in 2016 ? Doesn’t our democratically elected government have a policy of hostility towards immigrants?

Surely they are just doing what they were elected to do ? Now those same voters want them to change track
I genuinely don’t understand- if you voted Tory this is what you voted for

(For the record I voted remain and I’d never ever vote Tory - and yes the Ukrainians should be allowed here)

That's awful and definitely something that needs to be improved. Quite what racism in the workplace in Ireland has to do with the UKs treatment of Ukrainian refugees who knows but I'm sure it makes you feel better to post it. Anyway I am bowing out because this is an important topic and it is getting sidetracked. I really hope the UK pulls it's finger out soon and allows Ukrainians to enter the country.

forcedfun · 08/03/2022 13:51

It is so awful. I have a relative waiting for a visa. The way the refugees are being treated is shameful. They will be waiting weeks, at best, even if they have a family member in the UK. I feel very ashamed to be British

worriedatthistime · 08/03/2022 13:53

@Heatherjayne1972 typical remainer argument for many it was not a vote to keep people out at all
You realise ukraine not in the eu either , we take in a lot of refugees in this country compared to
Our land size from non eu countries

worriedatthistime · 08/03/2022 13:54

@forcedfun a relative from ukraine awaiting a visa ?
