You can hear the desperation in their president’s (and former presidents) voices now. They are BEGGING for physical help. Begging for a no-fly zone to be implemented.

I KNOW we can’t do anything as it’ll cause WW3, but tonight, listening to a former presidents and the current presidents desperate pleas is actually quite distressing. Heartbreaking. Those poor people being left to their fate with the Russians Sad

@Sweetandsaltycaroline

I agree with that. It makes me sick. I was wondering earlier today, whether there would be wars at all if the main pattern for the world was feminine and if so, what would they look like.

I wondered if most world leaders were female would things be different?

I have thought that , but when one looks at some of the cruel SS guards in Nazi Germany and Poland, some of the very worst were women.

Absolutely cruel and sadistic.
Even at Abu Graib, there were women who enjoyed hurting POW's.

noblegiraffe · 06/03/2022 22:46

@Etinoxaurus

United Nations mandated and enforced NFZ Heard something about it on world service but wasn’t focused. Hope they weren’t saying how it couldn’t happen as it seems a sensible solution.
Russia would just veto it, as one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.

''Ordinary'' women given power became torturers.
Maybe power itself corrupts?

I get the feeling that some posters think that if Russia get Ukraine it’s all over. It isn’t. This is very reminiscent of Hitler and his annexing of countries in the run up to WW2. Hitler invaded Poland knowing it would bring the full force of the allies on him. Putin will carry on annexing countries unless we stop him. You cannot appease a madman. I have no idea where this will end. The only hope is that he is toppled within Russia.

Clarabe1 · 06/03/2022 22:52

@Sweetandsaltycaroline sadly some of the most enthusiastic supporters of vicious fascist regimes have been women.

Living in a male controlled society, doing masculine jobs, of course they wanted to show they could out-evil the boys. Like thinking a female PM would be lovely and then we get one who helped attack the Falklands and wouldn't let any other woman anywhere near her cabinet.

What the commenter said was if the pattern was feminine instead of masculine would things be different? Yes. In the very few places in the world that have a matriarchy instead of a patriarchy they are apparently very harmonious and relatively peaceful places to live.

@Cantleave

If the USA sends aircraft to Poland to give to Ukraine,

That’s not the plan. It’s supposed to be:

Poland sells it (oldish) MiG-29s to Ukraine.
USA sells Poland F-16s to replace the MiG-29s.

TheOnlyMrsMac · 06/03/2022 22:54

I saw the report on BBC News tonight about Ukrainian children with cancer. Putin's war against Ukraine has meant that their treatment has been interrupted. Some have made it out and their treatment will hopefully continue in other countries like Poland and Germany. To see these highly vulnerable and innocent children exhausted from the journey and to hear an overwhelmed doctor say that, for some, the journey and the interruption in treatment is life-threatening, was heart-breaking.

I am also thinking of the over 100,000 highly vulnerable and innocent children, many of them disabled, trapped in orphanages and institutions in Ukraine. Ukraine has one of the highest numbers of such children in Europe. The charity Lumos www.wearelumos.org is working to try to help them and has a Ukraine Disaster Appeal.

I've been against violence all my life, but even I would pull the trigger on Putin given the chance. My hope is that somebody who cares about his war crimes in Ukraine, about Russia and the ordinary people of Russia, and about the world we all share, will get close enough to do just that. I believe that, without Putin, the inhumane war against Ukraine would end.

confused98 · 06/03/2022 22:54

Genuine question, why can't NATO come together and deal with Putin off books before it gets nuclear. SAS etc.
Surely if he attacked a NATO country that would what we would end up doing anyway?

@Strawberryjellyicecream me too. Yes I get the fear and people want to protect their families but at the cost of others? What they don’t understand is that you can only delay the inevitable for so long. Sooner or later the madman comes for you and there is no left to help. Good job we didn’t take this cowardly and selfish attitude during WW2 isn’t it?

We can go to support Ukraine rallies all over the country . The Ukrainian s here are going to them .
We can donate , and pray , and do more sanctions , ie write MP to support more sanctions .

TiddyTidTwo · 06/03/2022 22:59

We should NOT have said we will abide by a no fly zone. That was weak. We didn't need to say we would implement one either. All that was needed was Putin knowing that option wasn't being taken off the table. Now he knows it has. Massive mistake

uneven · 06/03/2022 22:59

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

mila5star · 06/03/2022 23:02

We absolutely should be making it easy for the Ukrainian refugees to get here. I think our government policy towards refugees is appalling. Considering how difficult it is for NATO to do anything in Ukraine, It is one way we really can help those in need.

TellMeMoreHellebore · 06/03/2022 23:02

and where are you from @uneven ?

GatoradeMeBitch · 06/03/2022 23:02

Both China and Russia have been very insistent on taking over other territories/countries this past decade. And they're close allies. Who knows what their end game is.

One thing's for sure though. We are toothless. We can't and shouldn't do any more than we've done - sanctions.

Clarabe1 · 06/03/2022 23:05

@RenegadeMasterx your ancestors undoubtedly sent their sons to war. I don’t suppose they liked it either but it’s a good job for you that they did because you would have been living under Nazi rule. Everybody’s child is precious, not just yours. Nobody wants a war but you cannot sit back and hope to keep your family out of it because sooner or later they will come for you and I imagine you would hope someone was there to fight for your rights?

@uneven is right! I don’t know whether we should be implementing a no fly zone. I am not a war commander but I do know that history shows over and over again that these sort of situations always escalate and you absolutely cannot appease a madman.
