DH routinely reuses stamps. His excitement when an envelope arrives and the stamp isn't marked is a wonder to behold.

Franking is the enemy.

What cheeky things do you do to save the pennies?

I try to avoid stealing in general tbh Grin

I love it when you go to a vending machine, there is nobody nearby and yet there is an abandoned chocolate bar in the bit where you get your purchases.
Makes my day!

You say this as though it happens a lot. Does it?
ViaRia · 05/03/2022 19:32

When I was young I used to check the ‘change’ flap on public telephones in case someone has left a few coins in there. That was quite lucrative.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 05/03/2022 19:38

When I’m going out shopping or with the fam on a day trip, I take an empty thermos mug with a pre-measured amount of instant coffee. When I need that caffeine hit, I just ask a nearby cafe to fill it with hot water, which they normally do obligingly. I also take a tea bag and do the same later on in the day.

This can’t be real

I charge my phone/ ipad at work, that must save a whopping quid or two a year. I also download films/ tv series on the free public wifi at work to save data. Sometimes I make myself a lovely latte in my travel mug to drink on the way home.

Crappy pay so I make the most of the little things.

statetrooperstacey · 05/03/2022 19:43

Stamps don’t have tube franked anymore for Royal Mail to know it’s been used. They will surcharge the letter and the recipient will have to pay for it . When they question why they are paying for it when it has a stamp on it they will be told it’s a reused stamp . Potentially embarrassing ?!

Why don't you add the water with the coffee? It's a thermos, it keeps things hot. Confused
ValBiro · 05/03/2022 19:45

@statetrooperstacey My inner nerd needs to know how...

rattlemehearties · 05/03/2022 19:46

Franking is often invisible. Anyway really soon they are adding QR codes to stamps to ensure they can't be reused.

Anyway, since when did stealing or fraudulent activity = "cheeky" Hmm

Do you understand what a thermos is?

Oh yes. The thrill of finding a 50p in the door of a locker at the swimming baths Grin

Or better yet, order a coffee and then when it's time to pay, floor it and run as fast as you can. They won't bother chasing you as too much hassle !

I too find the stamp thing dishonest rather than money saving . It may seem small but it’s effectively taking a service for free.
We cut dishwasher tablets in half and it always seems to do as good a job!

Takeitonthechin · 05/03/2022 19:59

I do click n collect, so I'm not tempted by other food on the shelves that we don't need that particular week.... it helps me stick to a budget

Sausagis · 05/03/2022 19:59

My upstairs heater broke a month ago. The spare part is having to be ordered. It's actually not too cold at the moment (mid-terrace so steal heat from either side). I might not tell people when it's fixed, just leave it off 😁

Knockoneofftheshelftowin · 05/03/2022 20:03

The poster getting hot water from a cafe does understand what a thermos is. She is saving money by not boiling her own kettle.

This, I have much more self control when I'm not looking around.

Not cheeky, but it saves a little money. I buy the 600ml 2 serving soups from tesco, I divide them up into 3, as 200ml is just as filling as 300ml, meaning I get 3 lunches.

CharacterForming · 05/03/2022 20:15

Ridiculously frugal but not cheeky:
I have a large biscuit tin in my kitchen into which I put any unused serviettes from takeaways and I use them instead of kitchen roll

Actually cheeky: ASD DC refuses to eat chips at school on Friday because they're unsalted which means they actually go hungry, so I snaffle a couple of sachets of salt each time I'm in a takeaway and secrete them in blazer pocket.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 05/03/2022 20:24

Not really cheeky but it is money saving...I have an open plan house, all the hot air rises so I often sit upstairs/sunbathe on the bed rather than switch on the heating.

If I'm passing through Heathrow I take a clear plastic bag for next time I travel as my local airport doesn't given then for free, it's £1 to get one from a vending machine or a take freezer bag from home.

KNain · 05/03/2022 20:24

I did not know that about stamps.

I quite often reuse them Blush Not for monetary reasons particularly( Although stamps are bloody expensive!) but because I can never remember to buy them and don't post a lot of letters, so I save any 'usable' ones for when I need an emergency stamp.

I won't be doing that any more!

SickAndTiredAgain · 05/03/2022 20:30

To save the money on boiling the water at home I presume. She’s not just not buying coffee (apart from the instant coffee), she’s not heating the water either.

SpaceFarce · 05/03/2022 20:32

I have a “family” plan on Spotify and share it with friends. It works out much cheaper - we take turns to pay 2 months a year. We do the same with Netflix premium.

If I see something I like in a shop, I’ll ask when it’s likely to go on sale. It’s probably cheeky but most shop assistants are happy to tell you whether it’s worth waiting a week or if it’s new in and won’t be on sale for ages.
