DH routinely reuses stamps. His excitement when an envelope arrives and the stamp isn't marked is a wonder to behold.

Franking is the enemy.

What cheeky things do you do to save the pennies?

I've also been known to add extra rolls or cakes at the self checkout scale. Quite often, actually.

I once saw someone caught for that. They do use CCTV. Can you imagine the embarrassment? The woman I saw tried to argue that she’d miscounted but she was still taken into the back. Not worth it.
Notdoingthis · 05/03/2022 20:34

No don't reuse stamps. My inlaws do and I keep having yo pay their postage and am too embarrassed to mention it!

There's a difference in saving pennies and actually being dishonest.

i water down washing up liquid and fabric conditioner. they are so thick to start with so i make 1 in to 2

i use a eco egg for laundry but with the above i keep a empty container and pour half from he new one then add boiling water and shake, ive been doing this for years and it doesn't make a difference

for both babies(in 2004.2010) i used washable nappies and made my own baby wipes, they were washable cloths that got thrown in with the nappies.
i only use solid shampoos, conditioners and bubble bars and organic natural soap on my face and a solid moisturizer bar.

they last so much longer and there is no plastic to get rid of.

if i had periods(severe PCOS)i would be using reusable washable pads

i do reuse candle wax in to melts.
when they cant be burnt no longer and there is loads left on the side or bottom i dig it out to put in my electric melt.

i always cook from fresh and homemade so no takeaways containers to throw away.
I dont drink coffee, tea or alcohol either ,so no throwaway cups ,teabags or those little pods
no alcohol cans or bottles but i kind of counter act that as i do like coke or pepsi in a can

can soups(we only eat tomato) i make go further by adding a tin of milk so it makes up to 2 or 3 cans.no ones ever complained

I did the swimming pool locker, telephone checks as a kid and will also add checking slot machines and arcades for money as a kid.

Mummapenguin20 · 05/03/2022 20:46

Theres saving money n then just stealing

MarmiteCoriander · 05/03/2022 20:47

In the 1970's my mother used un-franked stamps to send out all her wedding invites apparently! She worked as admin in an office and part of her job was opening letters!

I have a relative abroad who uses stamps on the small packages she sends me. If they are unfranked, I cut them out of the envelope and post them back to her to re-use. She gets so excited. She soaks them in warm water till the stamp peels off the envelope.

I've tried re-using UK stamps this way, but they must be made differently as they either tear or don't peel off as easily and fall apart.

Work colleague used to use the work showers instead of his own, fill his thermos with hot water from the work kettle before going home and charge up devices under his desk for home use. Not just charge his phone, but random things like makita batteries for work tools, rechargable batteries and a rechargable headtorch!

Cheeky things to save money?

My friend's ex always asked to charge his phone up at everyone's house. He wants to know wifi passwords even if it's a quick stop at someone's house rather than a visit.
He stuffs himself with food at parties, brings cheap stuff then drinks the expensive stuff. He takes leftovers home and freezes them.
He forgets to buy his round of drinks, he cadges lifts and doesn't offer petrol costs.
He regifts or buys in charity shops yet claims things are brand new and bought at full price. He resells charity stuff on ebay.

He goes into the charity donations store and takes anything he can use or sell.
He pretends to be asleep on trains or hides in the toilets to get out of paying.
He gets up early at the weekend and checks around cash machines to see if drunken revellers have dropped money or left it in the machines.

Borris · 05/03/2022 20:48

I didn’t know the stamp thing!! How do they know ?

Gindrinker43 · 05/03/2022 20:51

Cut the end off soft plastic tubes like toothpaste once they look like they are finished, there's always lids left. It save a fortune in makeup doing this

everythingisgoingup · 05/03/2022 20:51

Ricksteinsfishwife · 05/03/2022 20:54

How often is he posting letters then? And you stealing rolls and cakes?

Um ok. Go you,

TacoCats · 05/03/2022 20:55

I ask for extra sauce pots if I have McDonald's etc then keep in the fridge for when I need them. Grin
Same with sugar, pots of milk, napkins etc.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/03/2022 20:58

Back in the day, I used to drink 20/20, Thunderbird or something equally as cheap and alcoholic at home before going Out Out.

silverbubbles · 05/03/2022 21:00

I save plastic bags that my deliveries come in and reuse for stuff I am posting.
I unwrap presents carefully and save the paper, ribbons and gift bags to reuse. I make gift tags out of old christmas cards.

Kanaloa · 05/03/2022 21:01

@Knockoneofftheshelftowin

The poster getting hot water from a cafe does understand what a thermos is. She is saving money by not boiling her own kettle.
How much saving would you actually make? I don’t want to be melodramatic but if my life comes down to shuffling into a cafe and asking them for hot water on a day out to save money on boiling my kettle I’ll know that I’ve hit rock bottom.
PukkaP · 05/03/2022 21:02

Not much really. I wear my Oodie as I’m struggling to afford the heating bills. I buy the yellow stickered food and batch cook for the freezer. Always grate a couple of courgettes into spaghetti bolognese or chilli to make the meat go further.

That’s not really saving money. Unless you would count putting a coat on and walking out of the shop in it as a money saving exercise. For me I’d just call it stealing.
Giggorata · 05/03/2022 21:05

When my office went paperless, I salvaged discarded stationery from the skip. Notepads, plastic wallets, biros, post it notes, lever arch folders and so on.

Disgraceful waste of money, all of this would otherwise have gone into landfill. They didn't even offer it to local cash poor community groups.

Bromse · 05/03/2022 21:05

It's quite legitimate to re-use stamps which haven't been franked. I can remember people in offices having drawers of them! I have a few in a drawer too.

I took some holly from the woods to do a Christmas flower arrangement (nobody is supposed to cut flowers or foliage from the woods). I daresay I've done plenty of other things but can't think of any off hand.
